Where has the idea come from that the job of a prophet today is different than the job of a prophet in the OT?

I've heard it said that the job of a prophet today is to encourage people and build up their trust, but not to warn them when they are going wrong, but that the job of a prophet in the OT was just to warn people when they were going wrong.

I think this might not be true. I think whether it's a warning or an encouragement depends on the listener, on whether they are rebellious or soft hearted, to either not accept or to soak it up.

Thoughts please.

By the way, hello, sorry I have been busy and haven T come in much to say hello for the last month or so. Still busy but will check every morning for your thoughts on this.

I believe we need prophets more than ever. Never has there been so many errors (the isms) in the church that need correcting. There is such a lack of spiritual life....and a prophet calls people INTO THAT LIFE.

It is no wonder that so many churches do not abide prophets and their difficult ministries...because this is associated with spiritual life. And since there is little to no spiritual life in the common church...and in many cases a hostility to it...there will be no room for prophets and what they have to speak about. Their testimony is ignored as being bizarre.

Deep calls to deep. Spiritual calls to spiritual. Faith calls to faith. Life calls to life.

If you receive a prophet in the name of a prophet...you get a prophet's reward. So then there is life waiting for they who open their ears to the prophet....and there is the persecution that comes with that too. So then the rewards in heaven are great for the prophet...but the reward here is to be rejected.

The bible uses the word "prophet" interchangeably with the word "spiritual" in many cases. A prophet speaks FROM the realm of the Spirit.

We need a few of these (at least) in every church...as per 1 Cor. 14. Or it is NOT a church of God. God needs spiritual ambassadors and workers to operate in and from actual spiritual churches.

The church that God established in His Word is the one that has Apostles, prophets, preachers, evangelists and teachers.....each and everyone serves a distinct purpose in the church and also provides support and check points to the teaching of His Word. Prophets today are specifically used by God to expose false prophets and teachers as well as exhort and edify the saints. And as scripture points out it is for the "perfecting" of the saints until we all come into unity of faith. A prophet is subject to a prophet....therefore whatever they prophesy must be confirmed through scripture and by anothers witness of it. Prophets today do not add to Bible prophesy of world events but rather they confirm it.....they speak only what the Holy Spirit speaks through them.

The bible does not replace spiritual life...it promotes it.

There were many prophets spoken of in the NT...as they were very common in those days.

There was Agabus...but also the elders in Antioch who were "prophets and teachers."

Paul traveled with prophets. Silas was a prophet. And it was Paul who said that 2 or 3 prophets should speak in the gathering of the church....and the others should judge. So there was a special place devoted to they who walked in the power of the Spirit in the early churches. This is what gave them their vitality and life.

I believe all prophets today are false. That the Apostles and writers of the Old and New Testaments were the last prophets. And their word is with us today as the complete revelation of God in scripture form. As I said in another thread, the gifts including prophecy came only through the two outpourings, or through an apostle's hands in the New Covenant. God's word now complete, the prophetic gifts expired with the apostles.

1Cor 12:28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.
if God ordained these to be in his Church, please post book chapter and verse where he took them out of his Church.

And we have them solidly in place in their writings in scripture.

Jesus said..where 2 or 3 are gathered IN My Name there I am in their midst.

IN His name means in His place and authority. So this is referring to prophets who are living in the Spirit.

So then it could say...Where 2 or 3 prophets are gathered....there I am.

If we want God's presence in the churches...we need prophets.

Isaiah 9:14-16
[14] Therefore the Lord will cut off from Israel head and tail, branch and rush, in one day. [15] The ancient and honourable, he is the head; and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail. [16] For the leaders of this people cause them to err; and they that are led of them are destroyed.

Micah 3:5-6
[5] Thus saith the Lord concerning the prophets that make my people err, that bite with their teeth, and cry, Peace; and he that putteth not into their mouths, they even prepare war against him. [6] Therefore night shall be unto you, that ye shall not have a vision; and it shall be dark unto you, that ye shall not divine; and the sun shall go down over the prophets, and the day shall be dark over them.

Matthew 22:37-40
[37] Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. [38] This is the first and great commandment. [39] And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. [40] On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Matthew 10:39-41
[39] He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it. [40] He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me. [41] He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet (the Old)shall receive a prophet's reward(death); and he that receiveth a righteous man(the New) in the name of a righteous man (Christ)shall receive a righteous man's reward(Life).

Do we want to receive a prophets reward?
Do we want to receive a righteous man’s reward?

Do we listen to man and allow man to lead? ...right into a ditch.
Or do we listen to God and allow Him to lead?

Pastors read the prophets recorded in scripture.
Dave, what is the function of a Pastor, biblically speaking? no need for a long explination. I'll help you out, Jer 3:15

knowing that, is an apostle a Pastor?

There are false prophets to be sure. But you are relegating all prophets to evil? Jesus was a prophet....as were many of His followers.

Why be negative to the things of God?

It is the title “Prophet”. Men search and debate over if and when Jesus asserted “I AM GOD.” We love titles that demonstrate superiority and power.

All
flesh. Prophesy. It is equal.

Joel 2:28-29
[28] And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: [29] And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.

It is individual: Revelation 3:20
[20] Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

‘his vessel’ is the accountability of every individual. 1 Thessalonians 4:4
[4] That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour;

Awesome and spot on, IMO. I couldn't have said it even half as well!

a large of majority of scripture is written off the words of prophets....so you want less prophets and more scripture.... which is inspired by the Holy Spirit through His prophets? This is almost like observing a two-sided coin where only heads or tails can be a valid identifying feature to prove it is a coin. IMO
