Lucifer's Rebellion Evil did not originate on planet earth. Before God created earth, he had already populated the universe with other rational beings. The Bible calls these beings "angels," and names several different orders. Angels have often been made to appear as fantasy by those seeking to discredit their existence. Many artists have intentionally or inadvertently supported this by their inaccurate illustrations. Children have often seen the little angels and devils on the shoulders of cartoon characters, made ridiculous in appearance and action. One result of all this is that many people who believe that life exists elsewhere in the universe (even some with superior intelligence to mankind) reject the existence of angels because of their association with fantasy roles. But the angels are not creatures of fantasy. They are simply another form of living creature that has come from the hand of God. The angels, like mankind, were created with free will, and were subject to the same conditions regarding their eternal life. The most prominent of these chose to rebel against God. In order to understand the conditions in which we live today, we need to understand this angel and how he came to rebel against God.1. What did Lucifer hope to accomplish in his rebellion against God? Isaiah 14:12-14 Helps and hints: Years ago, as the story goes a great organist performed a piece on a pump organ. After the well received performance, the man who pumped the air commented to the organist, "That sure was a fine job we did, wasn't it?" "WE ?" replied the organist. "You may have operated the machinery, but I made the music all by myself." At their next performance, in the middle of the finale, the helper came out and sat on the front row. As the organ wound down to silence, the organist turned and shouted, "What are you doing out here. Get back in there and PUMP!" The other man calmly replied, "I just wanted to see how you were doing out here all by yourself."Lucifer became so infatuated with himself that he forgot that he was dependent on God for his very life. Lucifer has not life in himself. He gets it from the same place we do, GOD. He is also subject to God's judgement and will have no more power than we do to escape God's decision.Read Ezekiel 28:12-19This passage is the most complete "biography: of Lucifer in the Bible. The passage is outwardly addressed to the "King of Tyrus," an earthly king, but the language indicates that more than earthly realities are represented. Lucifer has used human agents whenever possible in his war against the kingdom of god. Ezekiel, with prophetic insight, sees through this human agent to the real source of activities against God's people. Questions 2-5 highlight some of the information given by Ezekiel.2. What privileges did Lucifer enjoy as a loyal servant of his Creator? Ezekiel 28:13,14 3. Did God create Lucifer with the seed of sin in his heart, so that it was only a matter of time before he became a "devil?" Ezekiel 28:15 Helps and hints: This is a very important question. Sin originated in the heart of Lucifer, as indicated by this passage. But did God therefore "create sin" because He created Lucifer? God DID NOT create sin. But He did create his creatures with the freedom of choice. God could never be content with mere robots. Free will means the power to choose for or against something. Lucifer had the choice to remain loyal to God, or to rebel against Him. He was created with no taint of maliciousness. His rebellion was not the fault of god, but the result of his own free choice.4. What was the cause of Lucifer's desire to rebel against God? Ezekiel 28:16,17 Helps and hints: The same thing that caused the first of God's creatures to rebel against Him continues to hold men and women in rebellion against Him today - PRIDE. 5. What final end is predicted for Lucifer? Ezekiel 28:18,19 Helps and hints: The final destruction of Lucifer will not be the result of a whimsical or vindictive decision by God. Lucifer will be the author of his own destruction. His intentional misuse of the gift of free will undercut the peace and safety of every other creature in the universe. 6. What two sins did Christ say originated in the heart of Lucifer? John 8:44 7. What was the result of Lucifer's effort to seize the throne of God in heaven by force? Revelation 12:7-9 8. Where was Satan confined when he was cast out of heaven? Revelation 12:9 9. Who did Satan bring with him to the earth? Revelation 12:4 Helps and hints: In the book of Revelation, stars are used to symbolize angels. It would indicate that Satan was able to turn a third of God's angels against Him in his effort to gain the throne. 10. After he was expelled from heaven, whom did Satan seek to deceive? Genesis 3:1-6 Helps and hints: Satan's rebellion in heaven had failed. But it must have surprised him to find that he still had access to some of God's unfallen creatures. God would allow the loyalty of ALL of His free-will beings to be tested. Although Adam and Eve were forewarned of the consequences of disobedience, Satan was still able to entice them to disregard the warning. 11. What did Satan lay claim to as a result of mankind's fall? Luke 4:5,6 Helps and hints: God originally created mankind as overseers of planet earth. He gave them "dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth." Genesis 1:28. The apostle Paul said, "Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?" Romans 6:16. Adam and Eve gave their obedience to Satan, and he was quick to proclaim his dominion over planet earth. Form this geographical location he would continue his war against God. The apostle Paul later described him as the 'god of this world." 2 Corinthians 4:4. 12. Why does Satan work so feverishly at this time? Revelation 12:12 Helps and hints: God could have destroyed Satan when he first rebelled. But the rest of His creatures would not have understood, not having seen the consequences of Lucifer's course of action. Instead, God allowed Satan to demonstrate what the universe would be like under his authority. The results are written across the pages of human history. When the demonstration is complete, God will safely be able to eliminate Satan without running the risk that His other creatures will serve Him out of fear. Satan is a defeated foe. He knows that he will soon be destroyed, and the universe cleared of the effects of his rebellion. It is sheer desperation that causes him to continue to fight against God. Sin has so thoroughly warped Satan's character that he is beyond the point of no return as far as repentance is concerned. Bitterness, hatred, and selfishness are the only plants that grow in his heart. His hatred for mankind is intensified as he sees men and women return to God and receive the forgiveness that he too at one time could have received. 13. What are some of the agents Satan has used in his was against God and man? Genesis 3:1-6; John 13:2; John 8:44 14. What is one place on earth that Satan was unable to penetrate? John 14:30 Helps and hints: Satan was never able to penetrate the mind of Christ. From the temptations in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11), to the final attempt to persuade Christ to come down off the cross, Satan dogged the steps of Christ's earthly ministry. Not even by a thought did Christ yield to the rebel angel. 15. What event sealed Satan's destiny? Hebrews 2:14,15 Helps and hints: When Satan caused the death of Christ on the cross, he not only lost his power over those he held captive in death, but he also demonstrated the extent to which sin had corrupted him. He was willing to murder the source of health and strength for all mankind to accomplish his selfish purposes. In this he lost any sympathy he might have had from all who had remained faithful to God. He proved himself worthy of eternal destruction. 16. Who is the real cause of suffering in the world? Luke 13:16; Job 2:7 Why Does God Permit Suffering? It was not God who introduced suffering into the universe. It was Lucifer, who became Satan; the devil. It is for the sake of those who will inhabit the universe for all eternity that God allows Satan to demonstrate sufficiently what the true course of sin really is. But you ask, "Isn't it enough? Haven't we seen enough?" Let me ask you: "Has mankind learned their lesson? Is war obsolete? Has crime ceased?" One of the sad facts of life is that some will never learn the lesson! Following in the footsteps of Satan himself, they will carry their rebellion against God to the bitter end. Only God knows when it will be safe to eliminate sin and those who perpetrate it from the universe without allowing cause for it to ever return again. Remember, sin can only enter the universe through the mind of a rational being. It is the result of the misuse of the freedom of choice. God's creatures will retain their free will, but none will ever choose rebellion against God again. The prophet Nahum says, "affiliation shall not rise up the second time." God will gain and hold the voluntary allegiance of His loyal children for all eternity. He will not do this through fear. He will do it through love. It will yet be proven that every act of God, even the destruction of the wicked, will be an act of love. One indication of God's love is the suffering that He Himself has endured through the entire great controversy begun by Lucifer's rebellion. Even with modern inventions like television, we see only a tiny portion of the suffering in the world. God sees it all, every second, every hour, night and day, without holidays or vacations! It is Satan who enjoys watching people suffer, and not because of his hatred for us. Satan knows how much it hurts God to watch His children suffer, and God is the object of his hatred. To Satan, we are merely pawns in his game. To God, we are the objects of His supreme affections. Even the destruction of Satan can bring no joy to the heart of God. He remembers him as he once was, and as he could have been. The day is coming when peace, genuine peace, will reign throughout the entire universe. The Bible is the guide to how this peace will be established and how it will be maintained. When God's plan of restoration is completed, the effects of Lucifer's rebellion will be forever gone. The universe will be no better for it. God would have preferred that it never have had to happen. But the universe will be safe from the danger of it ever happening again."And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes: and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away." Kriss, I enjoyed your discussion about Satan's fall. Of course, I don't agree with all that but for the most part, you are on target with evangelical commentators. I agree with your take on the Isaiah 14 passage and Ezekiel 28 passage. Indeed, Satan was in Eden, as Ezekiel points out. And I believe it is while he was in Eden that he rebelled against God. But I believe that his rebellion was when he dared to tempt Adam and Eve. The fact that this seems so apparent to me is because when God came into the garden after Satan had tempted Adam and Eve, he cursed Satan. If Satan had previously fallen, or led a rebellion, and been cast down to earth, what was he doing in Eden? Ezekiel says,
you were in Eden the garden of God
and then after describing Satan's sin says,
I cast you to the ground.
I cannot accept the Revelation 12 passage, especially verse 4 as describing Satan leading a rebellion of angels in heaven against God. The verse says,
and his tail swept away a third of the stars of heaven and threw them into the earth.
This is a description of an aggressive move by a Satan against the stars of heaven (whoever we discover they are). These stars are being thrown to the earth, not the led in a rebellion. The word used here is never used in that way. To me the most obvious reason not to use Revelation 12 in such a manner is the fact that Revelation 12 is descriptive of an end time scenario not a beginning time scenario. Simply look at the rest of verse four. I hope you don't simply dismiss what I've shown you.

Could there have been a garden in heaven? Could that be the garden that satan was in?

"Eden, the garden of God" seems to label it as the same place where Adam and Eve fell. Anyway, the action of casting (throwing down) a third of the stars of heaven is an aggresssive act against saints that is explained as something done by the little horn against the mighty and holy people in Daniel 8:10 as explained in 8:24. Nearly the same wording is used in both places.(Rev and Daniel)

If things on earth are a pattern of what is in heaven then there is probably a garden in heaven, this could be where satan's rebellion took place?????

setfree, even if there is an Eden in heaven and an Eden on earth, you still have the problem that the dragon is not "leading the stars", he is "throwing the stars." The word for throwing is never used for leading. But it is used for casting such as casting out demons. samy

Kriss, of course Ezekiel 28:18-19 have not happened yet. What does that have to do with the fact that Revelation portrays Dragon's aggression toward the stars of heaven? Please don't avoid the actual question. samy

Rev 12:4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born. Stars are angels as we are told (Rev.1:20) in this case fallen angels (Satans locust Army )Cast greek word ballō meaning1) to throw or let go of a thing without caring where it fallsa) to scatter, to throw, cast into

to give over to one's care uncertain about the result2) to put into, insertRev 6:13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth , even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind .Rev 12:12 Therefore rejoice, [ye] heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time. Rev 12:13 ¶ And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man [child].Rev 9:1 ¶ And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. Rev 9:2 And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. Rev 9:3 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. Rev 9:4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.Rev 9:11 And they had a king over them, [which is] the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue [is] Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath [his] name Apollyon.

Has anyone considered that the passages in the Bible concerning Leviathan are actually about Satan?Job 41 refers to a defining battle fought with this great serpant in the past where it was vanqueshed by the forces of God and made into a servant. Leviathan here is referred to as being a King over all the children of Pride (sound familier?). I have never thought of relating it to the casting down of Satan after the garden of Eden incident, but that really does fit well. David in Psalms 74:13 speaks of the Lord destroying Leviathan and giving him for meat to the "people in the wilderness" and Psalms 104:26 refers to Leviathan as being created to "play in the sea". The sea is used symbolically in both Daniel and Revelation (anyone wishing to expound on this is welcome to as I am still pondering its meaning, but some feel that the Sea in these passages may mean the "sea of humanity" or something similar)Lastly Isaiah 27:1 speaks of Gods final judgement on Leviathan by saying "In that day the LORD with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that [is] in the sea". This sounds very close to the description of the judgement of Satan in Revelation to me.

great thought Josey and yes I have considered it and in fact and think you are on the right track here.I think it is really talking about Satan. If I may give out my thought here, some people here already knows that I like to color code the key words in verse when talking about a certain subject.Isaiah 27:1 - In that day the LORD with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea....Revelation 12:9 - And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.Revelation 20:2 - And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,Isn't that getting familiar? Isaiah 27:1 said THAT crooked SERPENT. Revelation 12:9 and Revelation 20:2 said THAT old SERPENT.

SATAN’S ORIGINS Scripture says that Satan was the most magnificent being that God created. The word Satan is Hebrew, and means “an adversary, an enemy, an accuser”. He has other names which are related to Greek, and his role in events yet to be. Note that he is a “created” being, not “begotten”, as only Jesus has that designation! Before Satan became the “adversary”, his name was “Lucifer”, which means “Morning star”, and his fall from favour is described in Isaiah 14:12-15. There is much confusion and myth regarding Satan, starting in the Garden of Eden. He is there in Gen. 3:1, called a “serpent”, from the Hebrew “nachash”, which means “to hiss, mutter, whisper, etc.”, which has been translated subsequently as “serpent”. An allied Chaldean word means “bright”, which chimes with other Scriptural comment describing Satan as having a “glorious appearance”. In Isaiah 6:2-6, the Hebrew word “seraph” is used to describe “heavenly beings” as “burning bright, and elevated”. I n Numbers 21:8, “saraph” is “fiery serpent”. The words seraph and nachash are both used in Scripture to describe a serpent and a glorious spirit being. In 2 Cor. 11:3, Paul fears for the Corinthians, that they will be beguiled as Adam and Eve, and refers to the appearance of Satan on that occasion in 2 Cor. 11-14!! So, when Satan beguiled Eve, he was magnificent to behold, as he said “surely thou wilt not die”, Gen. 3:4, and he has been saying it ever since, with the consequence that many humans will listen to him, and will go to their destruction! They will listen to Satan, even though they know the difference between good and evil! In summary of this brief description; Satan was the most beautiful of God’s created creatures. He became enchanted by his own beauty and power, and wanted God’s position Ezek. 28. He is cast from favour, Isaiah 14:12. His name is changed after his rebellion to Satan, and he is allowed to try to stop trust and faith in God on earth, (Job). This process is still under way, and will not end until the events described in Rev. 20:2!

Satan’s Motivation! First a few words on Satan himself. Scripture says that Satan was the most magnificent being that God created. The word Satan is Hebrew, and means “an adversary, an enemy, an accuser”. He has other names which are related to Greek, and his role in events yet to be. Note that he is a “created” being, not “begotten”, as only Jesus has that designation! 20:2! In conversation with an Orthodox Jew, the information was offered that Orthodox Judaism does not interpret the references to Satan in the Old Testament (Tanach), as is understood by right thinking Christians (Christ-Ones). One has to be reminded here, that “Orthodox Judaism” sprang from the Pharisees of Jesus’ day. The Old Testament (OT) shows that Satan has freewill, starting in the Garden of Eden in Genesis. The fact that Satan tried successfully to pervert the Words of God to Adam re the “the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil”, cuts no ice with Pharisaic Jews, and they merely say that all Satan was/is is an Angel of God, and only a “servant” subject to God’s commands! The references to Satan’s many attempts in Scripture to pervert God’s Words can be examined by anybody, so space will not be used here for such. The remarkable thing to notice in all the events where Satan is involved is the fact that he always wanted/wants to deliberately change the meaning of the Words that God has given! Why would he do that? Well the answer quite simply is that to do so contravenes the Will of Almighty God! Why would Satan want to contravene God’s Will? To thwart His Plans! Why would Satan want to thwart God’s Plans? Because, if he was successful he would conquer God on God’s own Territory, which is His Love, His Word, His Promises, and His Fidelity to all His pronouncements in Scripture; and His Holy Being! Here we have the core of the matter! God has in the past made firm promises to mankind, starting in Genesis 3:15, (which through the Roman Church, Satan has tried to attribute to Mary, instead of Jesus). What then is the plan of Satan? Satan's strategy is:- 1) To obtain the knowledge of creation (Jer. 31:35-37,) (this has been sought avidly by science since approx. AD 1850.)2) To destroy the earth by degradation of all means. (This has accelerated since the start of the Industrial revolution.)3) To destroy Israel. (This has increased in intensity since the 2nd world war.) 4) To destroy faith in God/ Christ. (Satan is permitted to do his best/worst, to kill or prevent belief, faith, or love in Christ!) 1) Satan has been trying to obtain the knowledge of creation from the beginning, and is behind the work of Darwin and others to this purpose. He will not admit defeat, and will persevere in this up to the “Day of the Lord”.2) The attempts to degrade the earth’s environment has accelerated since the Industrial Revolution in the UK, and is a strong sign of the times we are living in, accelerating towards the “Day of The Lord”.3) This effort of Satan has been underway since Abram. As the promises were made by Jehovah God to His people, Satan’s efforts have increased, as was evidenced by the 2nd world war. The fact that the religious life of Israel is dominated by Pharisees, the same group that denied and organized Christ’s crucifixion via the Romans, does not help their situation, nor their denial of Satan as a powerful entity against God, and themselves! Satan’s purpose is to eliminate Israel, so that he can negate God’s promises to the Patriarchs! God has stated categorically that Israel will always exist, and Satan is extremely active in trying to thwart that Promise! Israel, since becoming a Nation again in 1948, are probably close to the OT promised culminations, but unfortunately, have yet to suffer more. They have yet to experience a false leader and situation, which will thankfully be short lived! 4) Satan’s current major thrust is to try to destroy the message of God in Christ. Since the Reformation in the 16th cent. He has lost his grip on the Word of God through the Roman Church, (although it has crept back to quite a large degree). He has quite successfully transferred corruption and confusion to many Protestant groups, to the extent that many people are held under one form of bondage or another! How has he done this? Quite simply by the same methods he used in the Roman case. He has used the minds of men to distort the Words of God, especially in Christ Jesus. The reformation ethos of re-examining the basic Principles of Doctrine were/are fertile ground for him! Many new Groups and Sects that have proliferated since the Reformation have proved fertile ground for the wiles of Satan, and the confusion of mankind. More than one good man has said that Satan’s best recruiting ground is in the Pulpit, not in the fleshpots of the world! At the present, it is these people that Satan wants to add to his list of converts, which at present includes 1/3 of all heavens angels! How then to be sure of being in the Truth of God in Christ, and not be beguiled by Satan’s lies and subtlety? One of the most profound Truths of Jesus, is that He makes us free! The many and varied “rules” and complex “interpretations” of Satan’s preachers and teachers are so formulated, that even they can’t explain with clarity what they are talking about! Any person can go to the Bible, and prayerfully ask for understanding, for the love of God in Christ to be theirs! Any teacher that puts conditions on this, is not in Truth! Any teacher or Group that states that the Israel of the Old Testament has not got a future, and have been disowned by Jehovah God and are replaced by the “church”, are not telling the truth, and should be ignored. This teaching is sometimes linked to that of “election”, and states that we have no choice in the matter of Salvation, only those “selected by God” are “Elect” and “Foreknown”. For more on this subject see: Any teacher or Group that try to use words to bamboozle the seeker, and any form of threat or insult, should be ignored; and the seeker can rest assured in the simple message of Christ Jesus, that all who believe in Him will have eternal life (John 3:16)! By these methods, the seeker will find peace and Salvation in Jesus the Christ of Almighty God; and by reading the Bible, as a friend, will come to know more of the Mind of Christ/God! There is no doubt that our Lord is the most gentle Saviour, but Christ (The Anointed of Jehovah) has to deal with the evil of which most of us are unaware, and in the timing of Jehovah (Rev. 6,) that dealing leading to the ultimate conquering of Satan is underway. In that context, Satan expected the victory when Christ died on the accursed tree, but instead Christ gained victory over death, and became the first fruit of propitiation (the saved) to the Father, (Jehovah God). So Satan’s plans and motivations will come to nothing eventually

Good catch JoseyWales! Leviathan is just one of Satan's roles. Please Read Ezekial 28 to learn of another role of Satan's and the judgement he has already received by GOD ( in the first earth age) that willl be executed at the end of the milllenium. Is 14, Rev 9:11 and Rev12:9 give more of his names/roles. This is just to name a few. His names are usually copies of Christ's name like the rock( Tyre /tyrus), the bright morning star ( Lucifer in Is. 14) to confuse and deceive the biblically illiterate. The book of JOB in its entirety is a great lesson for us on how to deal with Satan. In Ch. 1 we are told that GOD gives permission to Satan to test Job. GOD is positive that Job, one of his elect, will stay true to him and Satan is convinced that once GOD's blessings are removed from Job, that he'll curse GOD.Satan afflicts Job and stays true to GOD. His only problem is that for 37 chapters he listens to his biblically illiterate friends that are trying to convince him that he has sinned and that God is punishing him. In ch. 38, GOD finally makes Job stand up and says in vs.38:2"Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?" Job has been listening to man's traditions. The next couple chapters GOD uses creatures to describe Satan and his tactics and that the only way you can defeat Satan is by putting on the Gospel Armour( Eph6:6) and using the power GOD, in the name of Jesus Christ, that he gave us in Luke 10:17-19. We are not to argue with Satan but order him out(or behind us) in the name of Jesus Christ since even the angels do not argue with him- see 2Peter 2:11. The Leviathan is just a symbol of Satan's thick armour of deception and lies and if we don't know GOD's word and do not have on our Gospel Armour ( Eph 6:6), he wlll just trample us in the mire and accuse and laugh at GOD about his children that can be deceived. There is so much more to say about Satan but I'll stick to your subject of JOB.Another good catch:Sea can be used as a symbol for peoples. Please beware when reading responses on this site. If it is not backed up by scripture, take GOD's advice and consider it to be like Job's friends, yackety yackety yak of man's traditions.
