Ok, maybe this has already been talked to death in the past, but I'm curious what everyone's different thoughts on modern speaking in tongues are. Biblical basis please? I'm curious, and always willing to learn if I am wrong about something. And I know this is often a subject that is near and dear to people's hearts, so please...be nice, try to keep an open mind, try not to get too defensive, and keep it friendly!

I realize this doesn't meet the criteria, which I assume you want Bible references, but I just want to say something. I could get references, but don't have the time at the moment.I do not speak tongues, however, I do believe in the gift (some say it is not for today). I believe its use is often abused (and fabricated), but that does not negate the proper use of it.

I just want to make sure that foundational claims about tongues are being based on the Word. Appreciate your post

I also believe in the gift, though I don't believe it is for today. I am open to the possibility, though, and always give the speaker the benefit of the doubt. It's not my place to say whether what they are doing is genuine or not. I'll be interested in hearing what tongue-believers see as the purpose of modern tongues, as well. Anyway, thanks for the response!

Another tongue thread...here goes....I am braced for it....I too use to think tongues were not for today, but God enlightned my ignorance on this subjects of the gifts. Why do you believe they are not for today?

The new covenant has not and will not change (Gal.3:15, Acts 2:39).God remains faithful to it, not a jot or tittle shall pass until Jesus returns. Then the faithful will be transfigured, they shall see face to face and know even as they are known, so there will be no further need for tongues, prophesy, preaching and other Holy Spirit ministries needed today while we are still in this earthly body.Tongues remains God's sign of receiving His Spirit - that's how it is known precisely when people receive. The main use of tongues remains speaking to God in personal prayer ("praying in the Spirit"), not speaking to men.

Guess what Im going to say ???????? There no such thing as an unknown tounge or language in the Word of God the Word tounges means natural languages spoken by men the gift was to speak and understand Forgeign languages so that the gospel could be preached around the World. Anyone that speaks this can think what they like but it is not one of the gifts never was The gift given in Acts was understood by ALL it was given to teach (prophecy Gods Word) that is the only gift of languages ever given to say differnt is preversion of the word Now all you tongue speakes can say what you like about your prayer language but it isnt the gift. And was never heard of until the 1800 and then was denounced as Evil but to late to stop the Pentcostal movement.

This is the truth of what scripture says: As I said you may pray in some sort of unintellagble language but it is not written in scripture never was in scripture as practiced today. Any one looking into the language will see this easily. "What is the gift of speaking in tongues?"Answer: The first occurrence of speaking in tongues occurred on the Day of Pentecost in Acts 2:1-4. The apostles went out and shared the Gospel with the crowds, speaking to them in their own languages, “we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!" (Acts 2:11). The Greek word translated "tongues" literally means "languages." Therefore, the gift of tongues is speaking in a language a person does not know in order to minister to someone who does speak that language. In 1 Corinthians chapters 12-14, where Paul discusses miraculous gifts, he comments that, “Now, brothers, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction?" (1 Corinthians 14:6). According to the Apostle Paul, and in agreement with the tongues described in Acts, speaking in tongues is valuable to the one hearing God’s message in his/her own language, but it is useless to everyone else – unless it is interpreted / translated.A person with the gift of interpreting tongues (1 Corinthians 12:30) could understand what a tongues-speaker was saying even though he/she did not know the language that was being spoken. The tongues-interpreter would then communicate the message of the tongues-speaker to everyone else, so all could understand. “For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says” (1 Corinthians 14:13). Paul’s conclusion regarding un-interpreted tongues is powerful, “But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue" (1 Corinthians 14:19).Is the gift of tongues for today? 1 Corinthians 13:8 mentions the gift of tongues ceasing, although it connects the ceasing with the arrival of the "perfect" in 1 Corinthians 13:10. Some point to a difference in the language in prophecy and knowledge "ceasing" with tongues "being ceased" as evidence for tongues ceasing before the arrival of the "perfect." While possible, this is not explicitly clear from the text. Some also point to passages such as Isaiah 28:11 and Joel 2:28-29 as evidence that speaking in tongues was a sign of God's oncoming judgment. 1 Corinthians 14:22 describes tongues as a "sign to unbelievers." According to this argument, the gift of tongues was a warning to the Jews that God was going to judge Israel for rejecting Jesus Christ as Messiah. Therefore, when God did in fact judge Israel (with the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans in A.D. 70), the gift of tongues would no longer serve its intended purpose. While this view is possible, the primary purpose of tongues being fulfilled does not necessarily demand its cessation. Scripture does not conclusively assert that the gift of speaking in tongues has ceased. At the same time, if the gift of speaking in tongues were active in the church today, it would be performed in agreement with Scripture. It would be a real and intelligible language (1 Corinthians 14:10). It would be for the purpose of communicating God's Word with a person of another language (Acts 2:6-12). It would be in agreement with the command that God gave through the Apostle Paul, "If anyone speaks in a tongue, two — or at the most three — should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God" (1 Corinthians 14:27-28). It would also be in submission to 1 Corinthians 14:33, “For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.”God most definitely can give a person the gift of speaking in tongues to enable him/her to communicate with a person who speaks another language. The Holy Spirit is sovereign in the dispersion of the spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12:11). Just imagine how much more productive missionaries could be if they didn’t have to go to language school, and were instantly able to speak to people in their own language. However, God does not seem to be doing this. Tongues does not seem to occur today in the form it did in the New Testament despite the fact that it would be immensely useful. The vast majority of believers who claim to practice the gift of speaking in tongues do not do so in agreement with the Scriptures mentioned above. These facts lead to the conclusion that the gift of tongues has ceased, or is at least a rarity in God's plan for the church today.by Merrill Unger.

As far as I know the Bible says it could be languages talked in the modern world old languages that used to be spoken and were forgotten or languages never been spoken on earth. There is a lot of debate about this but the most commanly accepted believe is that everyone can speak in tongues but only some get the gift of speaking in different tongues. Its 2 different things but I do not know enough yet to explain properly. The use of an individual speaking in tongues is that sometimes we do not have the words to describe what we want to pray for also sometimes you do not know what to pray for and while praying in tongues God gives you an image and leads you in the right direction.I have not done enough studying on this to give you scriptual prove but what I say people have thought me out of the Bible but I can not remember the verses.I personally think its between you and God but I believe that sometimes the Holy Spirit talks through me directly to God and I have to say since this experience my life and my prayer life has changed dramaticly.I hope God shows you the truth. I believe Derek Prince's view's on it are very good

Kriss, tongues are for today. Those bablings are tongue, that people's spirits pray to God. The person doesn't understand it because it's an unknown language. God can use a person's ability to speak in tongues to speak to another person. When a person prays to God, they edify themselves.1 Corinthians 14:4He that speaketh in an [unknown] tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. The word edifieth is oikodomeō
1) to build a house, erect a building a) to build (up from the foundation)

to restore by building, to rebuild, repair2) metaph. a) to found, establish

to promote growth in Christian wisdom, affection, grace, virtue, holiness, blessedness c) to grow in wisdom and piety
Now, if you've got a person who can interpret tongues, you've got a person who can directly translate what the Holy Spirit (God) has to say. Therefore they can edify the church, doesn't that make a lot of sense? Here is the one man's testimony. He's speaking of the Holy Spirit moving through churches. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ct0JzJgKOBI

Prayer in tongues is a great thing. It build up your spirit and mind, and it allows you to pray continuously without ceasing (loss of words). Our minds are not fruitful, so it is up for our spirit to talk to God. That is why we do not understand the language unless if you have some sort of a divine intervention (interpretation of Tongues or God speaking through you in another worldly language such as Chinese).

Then what do you make out of 1 Corinthians 14:14?For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.Kriss, you'll really have to remain neutral. My heart goes out to you because you're missing something so dear. Do me a favor go talk to some Pentecostals (not new generation ones, but old believing people). You don't even have to talk to Pentecostals, my church is an old believing protestant, and we've got people who pray in tongues (especially elderly people).Mark 8:22-25 22And he cometh to Bethsaida; and they bring a blind man unto him, and besought him to touch him. 23And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he had spit on his eyes, and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw ought. 24And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees, walking.Right now you see other groups of Christians as trees, you do not have a clear picture. Why didn't Jesus heal this man right away instead of healing him partially? He had an important message to portray, and it is that we must not single out a group of Christians. You need to broaden your perspective and really examine Pentecostals. No where in the Bible does it say that tongues have ceased, and the tongues weren't only used to talk to others in their own language. Tongues were also an unknown language, and it was used to edify the spirit. And if possible, prophesy to the whole church. You must have a child like faith, and read things in the Bible as they are. I seem to noticed that you over examine things to death. Some things do need to be examined, but the smaller details are as simplified as they are. For example, that pause in Genesis hinting that the earth might have paused for billions of years is absurd. Punctuation doesn't play a big role in creation, and God certainly doesn't need a billion years. 25After that he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly.Isaiah 44:1-5 1Yet now hear, O Jacob my servant; and Israel, whom I have chosen: 2Thus saith the LORD that made thee, and formed thee from the womb, which will help thee; Fear not, O Jacob, my servant; and thou, Jesurun, whom I have chosen. 3For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring: 4And they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses. 5One shall say, I am the LORD's; and another shall call himself by the name of Jacob; and another shall subscribe with his hand unto the LORD, and surname himself by the name of Israel.God said that He will pour out His spirit, and He is doing that today.

the word "unknown" was never there Wakka its not in the manuscripts thats why its often in parentheses it was added by men it simply means natural languages of men that is foreign languages I know thats not your belief and I cant change that I know no matter what I show you, you will refuse to see it so theres not much point in arguing it. but I will not say its in the Bible because its not there never was any unknown tongue in scripture The gift was speaking the different Languages of men to spread the Gospel around the world. The tongue of Christ in Acts was understood by all this will only happen once more and that's in Mark 13. As I said I dont want to argue with you but I wont lie and say its in the Bible1 Corinthians 14:9 So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.11.Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.If you really want to know what the word says about unintelligable mutterings read 1 Cor. 10:10

Hi,You seemed to have overlooked these scriptures.2: For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. 3: But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. 4: He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. 1 Cor. 14:2-4

I didnt over look they say the same thing they are telling you not to teach /prophisise in an unkown language for it does nothing for anyone but yourself this was a warning given by Paul not a command to do it. For God understands all languages. And if the spirit speaks through you the evidence is it is understood by allYou might read the language study on page one of this thread.I Corinthians 14:2 "For he that speaketh in an [unknown] tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.""Mysteries" as given in the Greek text is "divine secrets"; so why would he be speaking in divine secrets? Note also that the word "unknown" was added by the translators for it just wasn't there in the early manuscripts. Another word "tongue" also come in here and in Strong's Greek dictionary it is # 1100. "Glossa, gloce-sah'; a language, (specifically, one naturally acquired).""Tongue" as given in this chapter is one language that you have naturally acquired by learning. So the tongue that Paul is talking about is a language that is not your natural tongue, it is one that you have acquired outside your home. Remember the great commission that Jesus gave; to take the gospel to the world. If Christians could only speak English, then the other peoples of the world simply would not understand what the gospel was all about.A indepth study on tongues http://www.entrewave.com/view/reformedonli...%20part%205.htm

Kriss. I'm talking about Pentecost. It didn't stop. The same gift that flowed through Pentecost is flowing right now. But God doesn't only talk to people through an unknown tongue, the gift also edifies the speaker's spirit. Where in the Bible did it say that the gift ceased to exist? Where did it say that tongues would stop.

Why don't you go to a pentecostal church and try it before you grab a bunch of verses and argue against it? (Seems reasonable eh?) And by the way, that website was taken down.(kriss;47861)
