Once I had the inclination to write an email to a minister online. He later mentioned that he had needed encouragement and God sent him a flood of emails from people to give him encouragement.

I acted unaware that I was doing so by God's direction.
That is actually a takeoff of a quote from St. Augustine of Hippo, or rather a modern version of a quote from Him.

Augustine’s exact quote within it’s surrounding context is this: “Once for all, then, a short precept is given thee: Love, and do what thou wilt: whether thou hold thy peace, through love hold thy peace; whether thou cry out, through love cry out; whether thou correct, through love correct; whether thou spare, through love do thou spare: let the root of love be within, of this root can nothing spring but what is good.”

This is great way to stay reminded of all the things, big and small, that God does for us day to day. Highly recommend everyone to do this

I decided not to, as I feared writing down my prayers and going through them like a list would make them repetitive.

I've been searching on Amazon for a book to help my adult children hear from God.

My advice here would be the same as what I was giving you on another thread, Soverign Grace. Keep encouraging them that they need to completely give their lives to Him first and foremost. He speaks to us in a still, small voice specifically because He wants us to develop ears to hear Him. For those who do develop the ability, He can begin to speak increasingly loudly sometimes. Samuel was dedicated to God from birth, which gave the Lord incentive to speak to him near audibly (1 Samuel 3:1-19).
Once while praying late at night I was at our couch on my prayer bones. The Lord spoke so loudly in my spirit I jumped up like I'd been shocked. I called my sister whom is a faith filled woman and we had a good visit. His voice that was like a yell!

I've heard His voice so loudly on occasion it shocked me as well. It comes out of nowhere and is associated with nothing I am thinking about, but what is said soon makes sense because things come to pass that reveal WHY He was saying it to me. Even then, He can be vague, which is a hint that I need to seek Him about what He was warning me about. It's usually just a few short words, but they are clear as a bell and clearly coming from without me.

The book 4 Keys to Hearing God's Voice, by Mark and Patti Virkler, from Communion With God Ministries, was helpful to me indeed, and so did, and so did A Guide for Listening and Healing Prayer, by Rusty Rustenbach. You don't have to agree with everything in these books to learn a little from each. Another book that I really enjoyed was Dallas Willard's Hearing God. Developing a Conversational Relationship with God. The first two books are easier to read than the third one is, but the latter makes the case that if God is a personal God, we should expect Him to communicate personally with us.

Any book that deals with a theme so intimate as God talking to us personally through subjective means rather than through the Bible as read and interpreted in its context will raise the eyebrows of some contemporary pastors and church leaders. But Christians through the centuries have been reporting that God communicates with them in a subjective manner at times. There would be much more to say, but I must go now. God bless!
Thank you. I'll look at the books online. There are an endless number to choose from on Amazon which is why I wanted to get some input from others as to what books helped them. I know what you mean about taking what's valuable even if you don't agree with the entire book. I don't see a lot of Christians agreeing on every single point. I just didn't want to get into new age stuff. I think the evil one speaks too so I want to be cautious.

The idea is not to hear voices in your head, not hear them. Especially for kids.
Unsure what you mean? My kids are all adults - although not very mature in the Lord. I started out by looking for a book on using intuition for making business decisions. As I thought more on it I realized that the 'intuition' was really God or the Holy Spirit so I started looking for books on how to hear from God.

By the way - who do others believe it is that speaks to them, if they want to share it - God or the Holy Spirit? This was another question I wondered about.

Often we "hear" or "see" or "feel" things that we really don't understand at all. (All, subjective sensations, BTW.) We just know they are from God. And we need to be just as aware of these times as the others when we feel God has issued a thunderous decree that echoes from the mountaintops.
I felt that way when something blipped across the back of my mind and I had the urge to check on my daughter and found her getting into medication. But I wonder how we can hone that system so that we hear more often. I wish that things had always come to me like that; unfortunately that hasn't always happened.

I think that might be what I meant when I said that we need to expect to hear from God.... not just when we are in a jamb... but at all times, anytime. I honestly think that if we were atune to listening for God more, we might have found that there probably were many times when He spoke, but we heard nothing at all.

I do that but thought that a book on how specifically to hear from God may help them too. You should see how many books are on Amazon on how to hear from God. I got overwhelmed at the sheer number of them.

Another christian told me that she was asking God why He didn't do anything to help the poor and a rumbling voice came out of her saying "Why don't you?" You would have to know her - she's not flighty. If she said it happened that way it did.

My daughter's husband was away in the military when her beloved dog was dying of cancer. She had been laying next to the dog bed until she got too tired and went to bed. She awoke with an angel walking towards her carrying her dog. She got up and went downstairs and the dog had passed. My daughter is not flighty and is one of the most honest people I know so I know that it happened just as she said. I just wish that things like this would happen more. There are times in all of our lives when we need that extra help and sometimes it doesn't seem to come.

I recall one time when my husband and I traveled west when we had just been married. We camped at different places on our trip. We stopped in the middle of nowhere one time and got out to cook something on a Coleman stove. There was nothing around but these cows - all the bells around their necks were ringing. We weren't Christians yet but my husband and I both had an eerie feeling - there was no reason for it that we could see. We packed up and got out of there. I'll never know the reason for that but it was something spiritual that we both sensed. I firmly believe we were in some danger there. Other times I haven't gotten that and I'd like to develop better ears to hear. But in that case we weren't seeking guidance, but it came to us.

I think that is very much the case. I think God tries to speak but our ears are dull of hearing. I'm trying to figure out the best way to hear. I was looking for books on Amazon but there are so many it's hard to choose one.

This is painful but I had been praying for someone's son who was involved in drugs. He blipped across my brain and I made a mental note to pray for him later. He died within a day. I knew that I had failed God and failed our friends. It still bothers me and I feel a lot of guilt over it. I knew God had wanted me to pray but I was busy and didn't listen. And Satan claimed another victim. So this is more of an important topic for us as believers than we may realize. I'm sure there have been times in all of our lives when God spoke but we didn't listen.

I think these cases are the most common, because we readily receive a word from the Lord if we understand it to be for our physical protection.
Another christian told me that she was asking God why He didn't do anything to help the poor and a rumbling voice came out of her saying "Why don't you?" You would have to know her - she's not flighty. If she said it happened that way it did.... I just wish that things like this would happen more. There are times in all of our lives when we need that extra help and sometimes it doesn't seem to come.

In cases like this one it's a different circumstance. I believe He speaks near audibly only rarely because He knows what He has to tell us will not be easy for us to understand and/or accept. The instance I was referring to (which is the last time I recall it happening) had to do with Him warning me that I was about to get kicked off of a forum I was a member of. I was ruffling people's feathers badly, though I didn't realize it, and the Lord was warning me that I had better ease up or I was going to get my walking papers soon. But He didn't spell all that out because I might have complained to Him that I should speak the truth instead of easing up (since nothing I was doing was wrong). But He doesn't encourage having His children argue with Him. He simply gives a warning, and if we have any sense we will listen. If we don't then we will learn a valuable lesson, and maybe listen next time. Simple as that.

I think these are among the reasons why He doesn't normally speak to us very clearly. Again, it always has to do with us developing the ears to hear Him.

We don't necessarily know...…
Once on Mount Athos there was a monk who lived in Karyes. He drank and got drunk every day and was the cause of scandal to the pilgrims. Eventually he died and this relieved some of the faithful who went on to tell Elder Paisios that they were delighted that this huge problem was finally solved.

Father Paisios answered them that he knew about the death of the monk, after seeing the entire battalion of angels who came to collect his soul. The pilgrims were amazed and some protested and tried to explain to the Elder of whom they were talking about, thinking that the Elder did not understand.

Elder Paisios explained to them: "This particular monk was born in Asia Minor, shortly before the destruction by the Turks when they gathered all the boys. So as not to take him from their parents, they would take him with them to the reaping, and so he wouldn't cry, they just put raki into his milk in order for him to sleep. Therefore he grew up as an alcoholic. There he found an elder and said to him that he was an alcoholic. The elder told him to do prostrations and prayers every night and beg the Panagia to help him to reduce by one the glasses he drank.

After a year he managed with struggle and repentance to make the 20 glasses he drank into 19 glasses. The struggle continued over the years and he reached 2-3 glasses, with which he would still get drunk."

The world for years saw an alcoholic monk who scandalized the pilgrims, but God saw a fighter who fought a long struggle to reduce his passion.

Without knowing what each one is trying to do what he wants to do, what right do we have to judge his effort?

It's good to learn how other believers handle this. I'm looking for a resource for my children but also for myself. I'm dealing with a weighty decision of my own right now and nothing has come clear yet. I hope you hear from God:)

"I hope you hear from God:)" I will, Ty ♥ And, I hope and pray the the same for you :)

I don't think hearing from God is necessarily a skill that can be developed, (if you do A then X happens, etc..) I think it has more to do with the Holy Spirits choice to interact and enlighten us. But we should still always be seeking

I've been searching on Amazon for a book to help my adult children hear from God. I've experienced uncanny times when I've woken up in the middle of the night and knew God wanted me to pray, and another time bumped into a Christian neighbor who recommended a book that was exactly what I needed. But other times I feel I'm looking to God and get no clear leading when I have an important decision to make.

Can others share how they hear from God? Do you fast? Keep a prayer journal? Meditate? I usually like the old-time writers because they seemed to have a better grasp of Scripture but I haven't found one yet about hearing from God. I was reading some of the comments below some current books on hearing from God on Amazon and was concerned because some people remarked about the unscriptural practices recommended in the books even written by pastors. Has anyone here read any good books on discernment and how to hear from God that are Scriptural? I think we're living in an unprecedented era of evil and even many churches have turned worldly. It's hard finding quality teaching that holds fast to Scripture but God does give some people the gift of teaching. It's just really hard to sort through all the books to find those that are scripturally accurate.

I hear from God when He wants to speak to me. Which isn't nearly as often as I would like.

Scripture is God's only direct voice today. James tells us to ask for wisdom. And God will answer this prayer directing the choices we make. We also know when love motivates our choices, it is God directing our steps.

Back in the day I used to canoe. And part of staying alive was in knowing how to read the river. How to spot holes (underwater waterfalls) and low head dams (drowning machines), strainers (things water passes through but holds you back like Velcro), etc. And life is the same way. But scripture tells us how to spot the death traps and avoid them. With scripture you can read people. You can read situations. You can predict outcomes before they happen. And make the best decisions possible.

That's a good analogy. I think we can hone those skills - I don't know how though. Maybe reading Scripture is the best way but there are times when we need extra guidance.
