It is our duty to repent of worldly things and keep our focus on God and do things that please Him.This to me implies and pretty much says that we as Christians cant have any hobbies or interests because then we are worshiping the creation rather than the creator..Soo --True or False?? --As a Christian, hobbies distract us from God.

Depends. You can still go fishing and be closer to God than ever. Jesus went fishing.

You can still have hobbies its only important to remember that God created everything, but we as humans corrupt it. You can take this through to books, radio, TV, PC games, Internet ect. All things were created to glorify God, but the devil uses some of these creations to decieve us and lead us away from God.I personally enjoy playing internet games like counter strike and dota, but instead of using the time to get away from God even while playing the game my focus is on the good in it the things God created and this brings me closer to Him.I think as Christians we should stop trying to see what is wrong in everything and what makes it evil. Ask the Holy Spirit to open your eyes so you may see the good in things, the God in things, so that from all situations you may take the good which leads you closer to God.God bless

I suppose we are not allowed to drive, watch TV or anything else. You cannot live strictly by the Bible. No way. You are going to sin no matter what you do.

That's bunk or false in other words. A prime example of taking a certain teaching and concept and extrapolating it to its extremes.Examples of some of my hobbies include: the Internet, at least when I am sitting to unwind. And much of that time is spent on forums such as this one conversing and helping other Christians.I also upload my pastor's messages to our church web site and keep that going. In addition, I have my own Christian teaching web site, but on forums I never give that out so that I am not associated with the web site.I like to keep my pool going in the summer and love working around water. It makes me think always of Solomon's laver and verses dealing with water. In other words, I think on things biblical and often had insights during these times. And even some work to a degree is a hobby. Both my wife and I have very much open space to mow and tend to the garden (I still have to rototill that yet as soon as the weather lets up). We are definitely entrusted with the things given to us as a steward. Then when I look down our long, green hill that we just mowed, I then look at all that I have and thankfulness to God pours out of my heart. It makes me realize the birthright covenant God gave to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the bible which explains why I am so blessed now. And to add one other thought to this, I have a rock at the edge of my property that I think looks a lot like the rock of Israel that the Israelites took with them. It's dimensions happen to be (by the common cubit) the same length and width as the Ark of the Covenant. Even a simple rock, coincidently (?) found and placed reminds me of the Lord. Then I tell people this and glorify God in doing so, whether they want to believe it or not. So, the difference between my hobbies and the person that uses them to worship the creation as you say is that my attitude and thoughts are very often on the Lord and hence "praying without ceasing" by constant faith.

God gave us a Sabbath day so that we would rest... though, it seems like a waste of time, God sees it differently.I agree, many people allow hobbies to dominate their time, and that is bad... but hobbies in and of themselves aren't bad...

I agree with Tim here God created things for our pleasure to be a happy well adjusted person one must have balance and that includes hobbies,or doing things we enjoy, as in all things moderation is the key if one is spending more time on hobbies than taking care of business then it becomes a problem. did he not tell us there is time for everything under the heavens.

This verse seems to conclude that we cannot love anything of this world!!1 John 2:15Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.I still don't see how we can have hobbies after reading that.

If you are understanding the scripture in that sense then basically you can say, one does not have to love humans as they are in the world and making such a statement would be saying the Bible contradicts itself which it does not.I believe the word "world" is being used as to say worldly things like possessions, desires, approval from people ect. Today's world is not built on the laws of the Bible it is built on the laws of humans which were made as to suit us best. I think you are taking the word "world" out of contex. It is not saying the blue rock in space and the things on it. The Bible shows us that "world" is basically human created things which in most cases lead to sin.So I think its almost like a warning if you love things man created you are not seeing the bigger picture that God creates all and thus His love is not in you and you will be led to sin by worldly things.Lol I do not know if that makes any sense it was hard to explain what I mean, maybe someone can say it better, but in any case I hope it helps.God bless

First, I understand your hesitation to enjoy hobbies. If we are spending our time wastfully on something that really only satisfies us long enough to get us till our next bed time... how can a pattern such as this be profitable in loving God?Before we go any farther, explain to me what a hobby is. I know what a hobby is, but I want to make sure we are talking about the same thing.
Ephesians 5:18-21:Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
There we are told to give thanks to God for EVERYTHING. Also, if our activity of choice is drinking... he offers a better activity. If we can glorify God WITH our hobbies, and LOVE Him with EVERYTHING we do... you see, it is not hobbies that are the enemy... it is our own selfish hearts sometimes. Do we do all things for our own pleasure, or for His pleasure?

I know exactly what you are going through. I was facing- and still am facing this. But heres what I learned- Seek the Lord in everything! - We seem to think that the hour we give on Sunday and Wednesday is somehow more important to the Lord than our lives the rest of the week. We are not part-time Christians.Ask the Lord to use EVERYTHING for His glory! -Sometimes we think the activity we are caught up in must not glorify God- well, then pray about it. But let me tell you this- Spending time with a unbeliever can be just as useful to you for the Lord than "giving" an hour dedicated to prayer and reading.Keith Green has a song- called "To obey is better than sacrifice"let me share a little of it with you, keep in mind these words are from Jesus' perspective...To obey is better than sacrificeI want more than Sunday and Wednesday nightsCause if you can't come to Me every dayThen don't bother coming at allKeith passed away many years ago but his love for the Lord keeps growing in those who listen to him. When I was feeling the way you do now- I found this video of an old sermon of Keith. Please please please watch it- Everyone- its dry in the beginning but it completely covers this topichttp://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseacti...videoid=4275048

I don't think that because your mind isn't on God while doing something else that it is wrong. Young people go to school and older people work. This can distract us. It is what is our hearts that matter and that hobbies don't take us away from our special time with Him.

You guys are contradicting scripture...1 John 2:15Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
