You trying to combine different contexts from Old and New Testament times.

There were no tongues in the Old Testament for one thing.

This is borderline blasphemy of the Holy Ghost as far as I'm concerned.

Not at all. Let's not be quick to try an attach this one to others.

That is fine for you personally. Just keep in mind that this is a highly contentious subject, and many Christians do not accept the validity of modern tongues as a prayer language for private use.

Don't have to tell me twice. I remain skeptical even of the claims made in this thread concerning the phenomenon...

I wasn't referring to tongues with those scriptures; I was referring to the fact that in the new birth we become new creatures in Christ.

There is obviously no tongues in the OT...unless you want to count the prophecy concerning it in Isaiah 28:11-12...because tongues is a gift of the Holy Ghost who was only poured out as the result of Jesus having died on the Cross.

If someone has a gift of tongues from the Holy Ghost, and someone points the finger at that person and says that their tongues are of the devil, then they are attributing what is of the Holy Ghost to the devil...and that is the definition of blasphemy against the Ghost.

They are not necessarily of the devil. They just are human babbling to blow off steam.

You can reject tongues if you want to...I believe that it is a valid spiritual gift.

If you think they are of the flesh then the consequences are for you, not for me...for you will probably never humble yourself to receive the gift.

As for me, I already have the gift...and since it is something that I practice in private anyway, it has no bearing on you.

I am edified in my spirit through the use of my spiritual gift. I sing in my prayer language, and I will sing with my understanding also.

Some people seem to want to put a stop to those who have the gift exercising it in any way, by disparaging the gift and trying to use fear tactics of the enemy to try and discourage us from using it...this is truly what is of the devil.

And if you think that my tongues are of the flesh, then that is on you...and you are not allowed to forbid me to speak in tongues even if you think that they are of the flesh...therefore I will continue to exercise liberty (where the Spirit of the Lord is) to speak in my prayer language as the Lord sees fit.

I've been fairly skeptical about tongue speaking for quite some time, as and I can't say that I had honestly encountered it before today. But I do believe what I experienced this morning was real, and I'm exceedingly grateful for it.

I was attending a prayer meeting before service for some extra fellowship and prayer time. About a dozen of us were centered around a square table, and we were all invited to pray as we felt led. A man came in late, we made eye contact, nodded, sat next to me. We started praying.

A few minutes in, this man sounded off a string of phonemes and morphemes in rapid succession in a whispered voice. It didn't sound so much like a language. He did not draw attention to himself. When he was moved to speak his prayer, it was not long but it was solid supplication and there was a tenor of strong emotion in his voice as he pleaded with God. A few minutes later, I heard this rapidity again. I felt an urging to look at him the next time he did this.

When it happened again, I looked up and he was staring right into my eyes, nodded, I averted my gaze almost immediately. Frightening. The prayers continued until our session ended a few minutes later. He introduced himself to me and to my friend.

We got up to leave and I called his name and asked if I could ask him a question. In the hall, "Were you just speaking in tongues?" His response was an immediate and confident "Yes." I told him that I had been rather skeptical of tongues and we talked a bit about it. He said tongues was "All from God." I was floored by the clarity, calmness, and peaceful composure of the man.

He spoke encouragingly to me, mentioning for me to plead with God and ask him to find what His will for my life is. To fast and pray and seek earnestly more spiritual gifts to serve our Lord. 1 Corinthians 12:31

All in all, a phenomenal day at church.

What are you experiences with this phenomenon? Does my account sound genuine with your own experiences? Do you speak in tongues, and if so, how often?

I will praise God for this gift and for this profound experience today. I am now decidedly less skeptical/judgemental about this claim.

You posted this as a nice positive thread.....but sadly, just as I guessed it has been turned into something negative.
BUT, as I said way back in post #2 >>>

I never speak of it...because the non charismatic, fundamental christians for some reason get madly angry when tongues is the discussion. They hate it and say it is from the devil.

I would not wish to be in their shoes when the "roll is called up yonder" and the Holy Spirit shows them the truth. ✟

Maybe I am a prophet and didn't know it!! :D

Bless you!

Yes, that does seem to be the way of things on the internet. I hope and pray that, in time, the Christian communities on the internet will continue to mello out. Self included. We are warned not to "bite and devour" one another, after all.

Friend of,

I'm sympathetic with your view as I'm Charismatic.

However, I Cor 14 provides me with 2 concerns:

1. First Cor 14:5 gives an example of a single person being edified by God while speaking in tongues.

2. First Cor 14:6-19 teaches what should happen in a group. There must be the accompanying gift og interpretation

Otherwise the people present will be as strangers - 14:11.

I've experienced a lot of disorder in Pentecostal-charismatic meetings over this issue.

You have just gone up ten points in my ratings :) banana.gif

All these years of reading your posts and I did not know that!!

I admire the people who are members here and are just that...members..they don't wave their denominational or doctrine flags , but just join in the discussions with no 'obvious' agenda.
( I am not a person who tries to work out "what people are" or put anyone into a box )

Glad to know it! Thank you...very refreshing.

With the original gift of tongues, the speakers knew what they were saying. Paul says tongues speakers edified themselves, and to interpret so all could understand and be edified. So these knew what they were saying. Today's tongue speakers do not know what they are saying meaning today's "gift" is not genuine.
Did the speakers know what they were saying? Nowhere does Scripture say this. And Paul would not have needed to say, "If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet" - because they would have been able to interpret the tongue themselves.

People get a buzz and relieve stress speaking in "tongues".
But many are exhilarated by babbling at an emotional level.
Really? That's not been my experience. I can only 'tune in' to the Spirit and pray in tongues when I am relaxed. And I certainly don't get any kind of 'buzz'. It's like listening to the radio in a foreign language.

God says the gifts expired, the enemy says they did not.
Not so. Scripture says that they will cease - "when completeness comes". And we are not yet complete, not until we see God "face to face".

Strange this came up right now. While singing praise to our Father last week I suddenly realized I couldn't understand what was coming out of my mouth. Honestly, I thought I'd had a stroke.

So I guess for those blessed with this gift I ask, do you know/understand what you are saying? You that have this say you feel peace after.. I was aware and alarmed. Sadness.

Is it possible the gifts are being poured out for the end, for those who will testify?

Please pray for me. I don't know if I'm going insane, possessed or if the Holy Spirit is talking. Is it a sin not to know the difference?

You said that this experience took place in church and you're asking if this is a genuine experience as from God. Isn't the scriptures the only way to answer that question truthfully on whether it's genuinely from God the way it should take place the way God says it should take place. First of all the scriptures show that many who we're filled with God's Holy Spirit spoke in tongues.
The miraculous gift of tongues attended the outpouring of God’s spirit at Pentecost, 33 C.E. The approximately 120 disciples assembled in an upper room (possibly near the temple) were thereby enabled to speak about “the magnificent things of God” in the native tongues of the Jews and proselytes who had come to Jerusalem from faraway places for the observance of the festival. This fulfillment of Joel’s prophecy proved that God was using the new Christian congregation and no longer the Jewish congregation. In order to receive the free gift of the holy spirit, the Jews and proselytes had to repent and be baptized in Jesus’ name.—Ac 1:13-15; 2:1-47.
Did you read in the above scriptures that the Jews and proselytes who came from far away places could hear the magnificent things of God in their natural language, meaning those who's natural language was Hebrew understood what was being said, those who natural language was Greek understood what was being said in Greek, those whose natural language was Arabic heard was being said in Arabic, etc. The point is that the people understood what was being said because God wanted them to understand because God doesn't just love one person or just a few people, God loves all mankind. So when in a setting in which there is more than one person God wants not just that one person to be built up in love for God and his/her spiritual Brothers and sisters. God wants all there among the congregation to be built up in love for God and his/her spiritual Brothers and sisters. God spoke of this in scripture.

1 Corinthians 14:4 The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up a congregation. 5 Now I would like for all of you to speak in tongues, but I prefer that you prophesy. Indeed, the one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the congregation may be built up. Do you see again in this scripture in a group of people God wants all to understand and be built up in love for God and each other.

1Corinthians 14: 26-What is to be done, then, brothers? When YOU come together, one has a psalm, another has a teaching, another has a revelation, another has a tongue, another has an interpretation. Let all things take place for upbuilding. 27 And if someone speaks in a tongue, let it be limited to two or three at the most, and in turns; and let someone translate. 28 But if there be no translator, let him keep silent in the congregation and speak to himself and to God. Do you see how in a group setting God wants all in the congregation (church) to be built up, not just one or two.

Quite a bit of assumption there, Barney. I think it might be better if we just read what is written, instead of adding the "so you see..." to God's words as you did a few times. It would be more accurately said, " so I see that as meaning..."

Not so. Scripture says that they will cease - "when completeness comes". And we are not yet complete, not until we see God "face to face".
Paul said "understanding" was the basis for "edification". He also said whoever spoke in tongues was "edified". So the tongue speaker knew what they were saying. He told them to "interpret" what they understood the message to be, so all could become "edified". This is not the case with those who think they have the original gift, which Paul said would end when the perfect (complete) arrived. If Scripture is complete and does a better job than tongues ever did, then scripture replaced tongues.

The gifts came about in the two outpourings and through an apostles' hands. The apostles are no longer with us agreeing with Paul that the gifts were temporary. If you want to prove your claim, record a tongues message and take it to several "interpreters" and see if they all come up with the same interpretation. Be honest and document it on video. Then you will know.
