Worms in hell ?
Jude 1:7 (KJV)
7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication,
and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example,
suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
Since there is no hell for eternal life, eternal fire is until completely consumed.
Possible unquenchable fire = "The eternal judgement of God"
Sodom and Gomorrah is not burning today, they were consumed eternally by the fiery eternal judgement of God.
Yes, as there is no hell for eternal life as the wicked do not get eternal life, then "The eternal judgement of God" is what it is talking about. To quench means to extinguish or put out. No one will be able to put out the fire that God will send. That is the strange fire of God that brings about for the wicked who will perish . No one will be able to escape from it by extinguishing it.
“Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.” is meant to show the finality of what happens to the wicked. The imagery is meant to show that God will use fire to separate the wicked where nowhere in time they would be brought back. Fire has properties which is familiar to us, our experience with it, or knowledge of its nature, we understand it invariably consumes that upon which it gets a hold of. Hence it is a symbol of complete destruction; and that the expression, “Where their worm dieth not" can denote nothing less than the utter consumption of those who are cast into that fire.
This expression was one which was well known and understood by the Jews whom Christ was addressing. Isaiah and Jeremiah frequently use the figure of the undying worm and unquenchable fire. In reading the inspired word the people were familiar with these expressions.
Jeremiah 17:27
27 But if ye will not hearken unto me to hallow the sabbath day, and not to bear a burden, even entering in at the gates of Jerusalem on the sabbath day; then will I kindle a fire in the gates thereof, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem, and it shall not be quenched.
But is it still burning today, we need to read and see how the Bible uses the word "quench." It does not mean fire that will never go out. Isaiah has the following:
Isaiah 47:12-14
12 Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou mayest prevail.
13 Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee.
14 Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it.
He is talking of the fire from God they could not stop, that would burn to those who were practicing enchantments and sorceries which was a abomination to God.
Deuteronomy 18:8-10
8 They shall have like portions to eat, beside that which cometh of the sale of his patrimony.
9 When thou art come into the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.
10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch.
After the fire has accomplished its work of destruction, that fire will go out.
