We were reading the following in a Bible study and it sparked a discussion:

Acts 2:16-18King James Version (KJV)

16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:

If the Holy Spirit is being poured out, then why are our sons/daughters etc.. not giving prophecy, and able to dream dreams and visions to have true unveiling of the last days.

So we then came across the following which then led to the question, do true miracles happen today:

Acts 5:12-16King James Version (KJV)
12 And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch.
13 And of the rest durst no man join himself to them: but the people magnified them.
14 And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women.)
15 Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them.
16 There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one.

....if so, why are we not seeing these open miracles?

God is not a showman. The devil is. God loves intimacy and things done secretly...but in a good way. :) The devil puts on a show to deceive people. The devil loves crowds. Jesus walked away from crowds. Jesus approached individuals. His miracles were normally one on one.

Miracles happen all the time. But usually they are done with intimacy in mind. They are done to increase our faith without getting caught up in the miracles themselves. That's the danger. When it stops being about getting to know God and instead looking for the spectacle. Once people get addicted to the spectacular...then you have to support their habit or else they lose interest.

Addressing the Op, our brother Episkopos hit it on the head, God is not a showman, only when it comes to his will being done.
but also may we add one word, "UNBELIEF". scripture, Matthew 13:53 "And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed thence.
Matthew 13:54 "And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works?
Matthew 13:55 "Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas?
Matthew 13:56 "And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things?
Matthew 13:57 "And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house.
Matthew 13:58 "And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.

because of some "unbelif", he the Lord Jesus put some out of a house when he raised the dead, Jairus' daughter. Mark 5:38 "And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly.
Mark 5:39 "And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth.
Mark 5:40 "And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying.
Mark 5:41 "And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise.
Mark 5:42 "And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment.
Mark 5:43 "And he charged them straitly that no man should know it; and commanded that something should be given her to eat.

there are many example of "unbelif" in the bible. but as said, when his work is being done, God himself shows off and shows out.
