I am only addressing the nine gifts in 1 Corinthians 12.
And that is why the understanding of the spiritual gifts gets skewed. We must look at all the gifts and see how many are neglected and how important they are. When some people speak about gifts, all they think of is tongues and healings.

Using tongues to build ourselves up will open the door to the other gifts as God sees fit to bestow them according to his individual plans for each one of us.

This is what Pentecostals and Charismatics believe, but the majority of Christians do not. No one has to wait to speak in tongues before the other gifts are given.

I didn't mean they had to wait, just that the more we use our gift of tongues the more power will be in our lives to fit us for our work within the Body, be it pastor, worship leader or greeter on the door. It opens us to the power source. If we don't use the gift we do not fulfil our full potential.

I'm like Titus, I don't speak in tongues.

Much love!

And there is what Paul wrote . . . I will show you a more excellent way . . . Love.

We love others and do what's good for them, whatever God leads us to do. And watch as God empowers us in that moment to perform whatever it is He wants us to do.

A prayer of faith is a powerful thing, and God empowers us by His Mighty Spirit.

Much love!

Can You just clarify something pearl, are you saying that if we do not speak in tongues we cannot experience power or reach our full potential as Christians ?

I think this is taking the gift of tongues way out of its purpose for existence. It implies that those who do not speak in tongues are spiritually deficient. But God has given each of His children the gift of the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit has given each of His children at least one spiritual gift (not connected to tongues).

1 CORINTHIANS 12
1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.

2 Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led.

3 Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.

4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.

6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.

7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

Verse 7 is quite clear ."The manifestation of the Spirit" refers back to verse 4 which says that there are "diversities of gifts". So the Spirit gives at least one spiritual gift to the one who proclaims sincerely that "Jesus is the Lord".

I am re-reading this and it is a real eye opener. It's free so give it a try.
Tongues is the least of the gifts.

There is no gift that is given to everyone.

Tongs is the least of the gifts.

No single gift is given to everyone.

There is no such thing as one gift that opens the door to other gifts.

I am not saying you are wrong. I am saying I am not addressing the other gifts just the nine in 1Cor 12,
Tongues is the least of the gifts.

There is no gift that is given to everyone.

Two things. In an attempt to keep this going in the right direction, if I am given a car for my birthday I am so grateful. If I am given a shirt for my birthday I am so grateful. What is important is that both are a gift, not what they are worth.

As the OP, I have not said as yet, that a gift is given to everyone.
