When I was sick, very malnourished, a fair amount of nerve damage, much of my muscle mass gone, I am convinced that God spoke to me, not only to tell me to get out of that bed and start eating, but I believe He told me what to eat, yogurt and figs.

Yogurt made good sense to me, but I had never had a fig before. I knew nothing about figs. But I knew that voice. So I ate yogurt and figs, and began to heal.

I like figs, I eat them all the time. After a number of months, I got curious, and researched figs, and found they are known for having a blend of calcium and protein and B vitamins and such so as to be perfectly suited for the restoration of bone, muscle and nerve tissue. Well!

So, this is extra-Biblical revelation. Right?

Much love!

Christians should understand that there is an OT Apocrypha as well as an NT Apocrypha. Both have numerous books which do not belong in the Bible. But the Catholic and Orthodox churches have accepted many of them as Scripture because they were found in the Septuagint (LXX).

However, the Protestant Bibles from the Reformation period have only 66 books which are canonical, and for the OT those 39 books correspond to the 24 canonical books of the Hebrew Tanakh. The canon of Scripture is those books which are accepted among Christians as divinely inspired, therefore authoritative. And the Holy Spirit did lead Christians to discern between the wheat and the chaff.

At the same time, some of these books do have historical or moral value, so they cannot all be regarded as worthless. However, they cannot really have spiritual value, and none of them should be used to establish any doctrine.

Christians should also understand that theological liberals do not accept the Bible as the Word of God. Therefore the canon means nothing to them.

No, it is illumination.

Revelation is something not covered in Bible.

Illumination is covering something biblical on a personal level.

I don't understand the difference. I believe God revealed to me what I needed to do, and that this information was not something covered in Scripture, that is, my particular dietary needs, and so God gave me a direct revelation.

Would you mind defining revelation compared to illumination? How they are different?

Much love!

On a personal level it was not covered. A biblical level it is covered.

God speaks to each of us and helps us understand the Bible and other issues. But the issues are never new to the Bible.

I have diabetes. Talk about needing guidance and a learning curve.

Maybe this way will help. Better understanding what is in the Bible versus something not cover at all in the Bible.

This is not the topic. It is about claims of revelations pertaining to Gospel or Bible truth outside the Bible. For example there are so-called prophets today, but all they do is re-present what is already in the Bible. Here is an example:

'"The enemy is coming to steal, but I am coming to shake. I am coming to shake the nation and all that can be shaken. There must be a shaking for the revealing of My glory to take place. There must be a shaking of the foundations not established in Me to bring forth the foundations of righteousness that I desire to establish in the nation."' (The Elijah List)

1. The Bible already tells us that our enemy steals and destroys (Mt 13:19;Jn 10:10).

2. We are also told that just before the Second Coming of Christ (with power and great glory) the heavens and the earth will be shaken, and there will be cataclysmic cosmic events (Mt. 24:29,30; Heb 12:25-27)

Hi Enoch,

OK. I'm interested in what parameters people use when speaking of extrabiblical revelation. No worries!

Much love!

I wouldn't call this type of thing extra-biblical revelation , I call it guidance from the Holy Spirit for your personal situation & healing. God looks out for us and knows what we need before we ask, as Jesus said. Perhaps it was an answer to prayer or a cry out to God , that you don't specifically recall. Like , Lord what am I supposed to do now??

marks,

It does not matter what parameters people use. We need to know whether there are any writings OUTSIDE THE BIBLE ("extra-biblical") which are as inspired and authoritative as the sixty six books of our bibles. And the only way to establish this is (1) internal evidence, (2) the witness of the Holy Spirit, and (3) the history of the books of the Bible.

Christ Himself established the authority of the Old Testament (Luke 24). Peter already confirmed that all of Paul's epistles (51% of the NT) were also Scriptures (on the same footing as the OT), and that Peter's epistles were also authoritative. And except for perhaps five books in the NT which do not make a claim, we have accounted for most of the books of the Bible. The ones which do not make an overt claim can be seen through internal evidence to have been inspired, and the Holy Spirit bears witness.

I meant in terms of application.

And it seems this discussion is about extrabiblical revelation that is felt to impact on the teaching of Scripture.

But I believe that extrabiblical revelation can extend to much more than that. If God is speaking to me, perhaps it's about my diet, and perhaps it's about the meaning of justification. Same God, same me, different topic, still revelation.

I find sometimes that refocusing on a different model of the same dynamic can shake loose new thoughts.

Much love!
Mark

Hi tzcho2,

I see this as revelation from God. In fact, this was a simple example, but without going into the details, I've had to rely on God's personal revelation to me so that I could stay alive. I'm not kidding. There's a faith builder!

If God speaks to us, He can speak regarding the Bible, or anything else, would you agree? I mention the figs to attempt the approach the topic in a less emotionally charged way, but I guess I'm out of step with the thread.

Another social fail!

Much love!

Social fail?? lol , shall we start a club?
Don't misunderstand I definitely believe that was God personally instructing you what to do and how to heal. I just never thought of it as or called this thing "extra-biblical" revelation when that occurs. :) I figured extra-biblical related to like the apocripha etc...

I have had times when I felt there must be an angel that was sent to help me. Once I was at a traffic light going to make a left hand turn and when the green arrow went to indicate Left turn , I felt compelled to sit and not move. It felt like everything was in slow motion, I was aware of the light being green and flashing and that I was supposed to make the left hand turn and I expected someone to start honking at me. Suddenly a car came flying through the intersection and turned left on a Red Light. I saw the womans face she looked at me and her mouth dropped open. She came right infront of my car and looked up and saw she had not only ran a Red light but made a left on it when I had a Left turn arrow. She was speeding and probably would have T-boned me if I would have gone when the light turned green for me. It felt kind of guided & miraculous what happened.

It's the same God Who protected you on that day that will guide you in His Word, so I see this as all one.

The OP puts this in terms of, true extrabiblical revelation is verifiable in Scripture, and if it's not verifiable in Scripture.

I perceive that the reason for the thread (@CoreIssue may correct me if I'm mistaken) is to discredit some people's "extrabiblical revelation" which informs their commentary on Scripture, said commentary being disagreed with.

And I think that's not necessarily the best approach.

I guess I just feel this falls short of a full discussion, but I'm not going to keep harping on so I'll stop now. Really. I'm stopping. Stopping now . . .

Much love!

I don't think it is to discredit.
Extra-biblical revelations is a flag to me of stepping away from the scriptures.
It is what a false gospel falls under. It is the deceiving teachings that some try to spread claiming that they came from Jesus. It's what all the false teachers throughout history have done. We are not to add or subtract from the Word of God.

The scriptures are to fulfill God's purposes, namely to give us life and life abundant. The books that could have been written on Jesus' life would fill the earth, as it is written. But we have what is necessary.

One must wonder what God neglected to reveal that we still need, there is nothing universal (for everyone) for sure. Spiritual insights are hidden in the scriptures, and are hidden for a reason. It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings.

Jesus also concealed knowledge from Nicodemus "I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things?" Has earthly knowledge increased to the point that we are now ready for more revelation of the heavenly? Namely I refer to the concept of time.

We understand time better these days than a hundred years ago, at least to the point that it shouldn't be taken for granted as a constant in all realities. For there are many spiritual insights to be had from this revelation. It is profitable for me to have a vague understanding of timelessness, as it is the only way to reconcile some scriptures. I trust it fits with all scripture in some way, though i don't know exactly how.

To say God neglected anything is to say God failed.

God never fails.
