Just wondered if anyone here plays the uke. I purchased a cheap one last summer and tried to teach my self...yikes how different than a guitar it is! Even tuning it! @Episkopos . do you play uke as well as the guitar/base?
I have to share my FAVORITE uke player EVER!!!!!
This guy is like, one with the uke! Wish I could find another that I really like, even better than this but, here is this anyhow for any who wants to see some awesome talent!

And also...Hallelujah:

Not sure about the uke...although I've added dulcimer to tracks before.....and lyre.

But he does get a good tone out of his uke.

Nancy,
I have been playing for a few years now. Always wanted to play guitar when I was younger but never spent the time. So now, I don't consider myself a musician but I do have a little fun with it. I grew up with my father singing in the vineyard...so I guess the uke is just an excuse to sing.

Don't know what a dulcimer is but will def google it! And, yes he sure does make that thing come alive...what a beautiful gift.

Oh wow...looks like you don't necessarily have to have long fingers either, just timing and accuracy! Hmmm...and, it looks almost as fun as the uke, lol. You have me thinking on this one now Epi! Maybe it would be right down my alley.

It's a great, if underrated instrument. I used it to add some high end to recordings. It has a droning sound....so you always play in the same key....like bag pipes. I used to tune it to the key of the recording and play it....and since it is always in only one key ...there's no bad notes!

It's very easy to play.

It looks a little rustic, like something left over from the last shed built.
But sounds great. I wish I had a good ear, I don't :(
But, I bet you can still enjoy listening to music, that's what I am best at, lol.

Also, the price is not bad for a used or a starter. You say it is easy to learn but, I would say it will be much more of a challenge to me than YOU! lol.

My wife's college roommate plays this kind of dulcimer (and about 50 other instruments) all around Alabama at festivals.
Looks like there are at least two types I take it? The first one I saw was more like a hand plucker/strummer? This looks more like a xylophone! Both beautiful and peaceful sounding instruments!

I think there are at least six different kinds.

I used to play the guitar for a number of years. All you need for chord harmony is 3 notes, and 1 note for melody, so the uke can handle complex pieces like that guy is playing (and very well indeed). On guitar this is called 'chord melody' (which I used to be able to play). It's much like how a pianist plays, and is the original way the guitar was created to be played (in Spain).
