Peter said to Him, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” And He said, “Come!” And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him, and *said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” When they got into the boat, the wind stopped.

MATTHEW 14:28‭-‬32

If we needed too and were abiding in the Holy Spirit, could we walk on water like Christ did? Like Peter?

It is thought provoking to wonder how much we limit God's power in us by doubting and unbelief. It a bit takes me back to think I could walk on water...I don't even know honestly if I would have enough humility to do that. I have to make sure my heart is in the right place when I am singing since I can be a ham at times. But do you

1) believe in miracles where someone else could do something like this? In what circumstances?

2) Do you believe you could do this?

3) Do you believe in instant/divine healing that it is possible.

As for me, wow. I don't know honestly. The pastor was talking about this tonight that sometimes we have to take a step out of the boat in faith when it comes to following God's will. And then he talked about how we could walk on water like this, that it wasnt just because Jesus was the Son of God that He could walk on water. I don't know. It is thought provoking. He asked us if we would step out of the boat (it was a discussion). I said I honestly would want to know how to swim first, which I do. Lol.

Id just like to look up more scriptures on this. I know the disciples did a lot of miracles and Christ said some would do even greater miracles then Him. I think about Jesus miracles and wonder if I would ever see a miracle like that in my lifetime, much the less doing something like that. Jesus saved my spirit from Hell. If I can trust Him with that, I should be able to trust Him with anything else.

Hi,

Scripture does say;

“all things are possible to him that believes”

But I think there is a great difference between believing with the head and believing with the heart. I think many people try to believe such and such with their heads and when it fails they get all discouraged. Not seeing the truth that the “all things are possible” is only true for the faith of the heart.

That begs the question how do you get the faith of the heart? My thoughts on that are it’s like when God gives you light on a certain subject, you just “know”. Like when you’ve read a scripture a thousand times than one time God as it where turns the light on concerning that scripture and you see and know like you’ve never saw or knew before. I think that is the faith of the heart. When God speaks to your heart which results in the faith that walks on water.

Never had the faith that can walk on water, but I’ve gotten some light in other areas which has so blessed me my heart still is in joy over the light.

Anyways, those are my thinks.

Blessings,

Much love in Christ, Not me

Ive heard some life changing statements lately. Ive always said I trusted in Christ for my salvation. But I get afraid and worry about things. Not as much as I used too, but still I do. Peter started to sink when he didn't have his eyes on Jesus. He got afraid by the circumstances. But the same power that raised Jesus Christ from the dead lives in us.

Eyes on Christ I think is the key.

We all are in a state of growing, so as long as we are growing in our hope, faith, love, and our relationship with Christ. I think sooner or later we will be established in our faith, as long as we stay wanting it.

Peter asked Jesus if he could come to him on the water, and the answer was yes. So what was granted to Peter was like an answer to a prayer. Later the apostles were 'given' apostolic authority to do miracles in his name, but of course without faith, they would do nothing. The era of miracles ended in the first century, we can not walk on water because the answer is simply no, and not because we lack faith.. jmo

Every step that we take toward Jesus is walking on top of the water instead of sinking into it. This is considering what the water represents. It is something we must keep under our feet as not to fall back into a spiritual death.

To walk on H2O like Jesus did would require a good reason. Satisfying our curiosity or even wanting to prove to the power of God to a doubting questioning unbeliever is NOT a good reason. Consider what James wrote:

"Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts." James 4:3

Consider also when the Jewish leaders pressed Jesus for a sign, He told them the only sign they would get would be the sign of Jonah [Matt 12:39ff]. He also ignore King Herod's request for him to perform a miracle. There must be a good reason in the eyes of God.

When Jesus did walk on water [H2O] he did so for his disciples for encouragement at that moment and for later when he would not be with them in the flesh. He did it so that writers of the gospels could include it for you and I and everyone to read and to learn. Don't expect that kind of walking on water any time soon, if ever. We are not here to put on a show for people whose hearts are closed to God.

Remember this verse at the end of the story about Abraham and Lazarus and the rich man after they were dead and buried:

"And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead." Luke 16:31

Jesus already rose from the dead and they don't believe it. Don't expect that you walking on water would change their minds.

Consider also what Jesus said to Thomas because the man had insisted on seeing with his own two carnal eyes:

"Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.

Paul was a great man of faith and a miracle worker in his own right, but he needed to travel by ship when necessary. In fact he experienced shipwreck but could not walk away on water. So the lesson is that there is a time and a place for everything.

His walking on water is prophetic, is it not? Showing all subdued and still under His feet. The greater miracle.(IMO).

Hi Mayflower,
Same thing I have wondered too. If I thought God was calling me to do that, then I would hope that my faith was strong enough. As far as Jesus saying that they would do "greater" miracles, I do believe that means in scope? I have never seen any of the miraculous things mentioned in the bible and, neither do I know any who have either.
I hate to say that those particular gifts have ceased with the Apostles but...I cannot back that up so...it's just IMO ♥

It was only Peter who walked on water. The other disciples stayed in the boat! And Jesus didn't rebuke them for lack of faith!

Another point: Peter didn't step onto the water until He heard Jesus' summons. Taking a step of extreme risk like that (in any context) without first hearing Jesus' call is not 'faith' but testing God.

I pray my all my desires will line up with Jesus Christ. Because like I said, I doubt Id have enough humility to do that. Not a faith thing, but flesh. But just the idea that we have that ability through Christ Jesus is so inspiring. It is a very encouraging thought to walk closer to Christ and "get out of the boat" in areas of faith. Because when we have our eyes on Jesus, we can do amazing things for His kingdom!

For sure!!!! This would be my concern. Because honestly, I think it would just be super AWESOME!!!!! It is very important to learn to distinguish God's voice from our own.

it's not nessary time and place, but his, God will, for it is he who do the works. as the Lod Jesus said, "I'm come to do his will", and he was in flesh as we, who is our example. as our amadeus posted, "that we may not consume it upon our lusts". as said, for all miracles are to give glory to God. example, John 9:1 "And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.
John 9:2 "And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?
John 9:3 "Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.
John 9:4 "I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.

God's WORK is not a game, or a play station for US, no it's serious business, for we must be about our Father .... business.

Hi Mayflower,

. . . @CharismaticLady

The first passage which comes to mind is Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me", Or, literally,

In all I am strong in the one giving me ability, Christ.

I think it's all about obedience.

Luke 17
3 Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him.
4 And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him.
5 And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.
6 And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.
7 But which of you, having a servant plowing or feeding cattle, will say unto him by and by, when he is come from the field, Go and sit down to meat?
8 And will not rather say unto him, Make ready wherewith I may sup, and gird thyself, and serve me, till I have eaten and drunken; and afterward thou shalt eat and drink?
9 Doth he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I trow not.
10 So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.

Lord, Increase our faith, we can't do that!

To which He replied:

When the servants do their duty, is this a commendation to them? They just do what they are told. They asked Jesus to increase their faith so they could do what He taught. He told them, just do it.

Peter had this mind in the boat. If You tell me to. Jesus told Peter to. Peter did.

If you do what Jesus tells you to do, whatever it may be, you will do it, no matter how impossible.

There is the discussion of spiritual gifts also. I believe the same principles apply. If God has me cooking for the church, I'm going to trust Him to make a good meal.

A different example . . . I run a small company for it's absentee owners, and I've been doing this a long long time. I know how to organize people and resources and tasks. I do it all the time.

But when it comes to the potluck, I can't seem to run that for the life of me! I don't have the gift of administration. However . . . there are others who do, and Thank God for them!

Even if I can swim, that ability doesn't help me walk on water. My natural abilities just don't carry over into the spiritual. I think there is much confusion in this regard, people who are good teachers in the world take on themselves to teach the church. Or those who have much money start spreading it around, but unless this is by the gift of giving, well . . . it's not the spiritual work.

2 Chronicles 25
5 Moreover Amaziah gathered Judah together, and made them captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, according to the houses of their fathers, throughout all Judah and Benjamin: and he numbered them from twenty years old and above, and found them three hundred thousand choice men, able to go forth to war, that could handle spear and shield.
6 He hired also an hundred thousand mighty men of valour out of Israel for an hundred talents of silver.
7 But there came a man of God to him, saying, O king, let not the army of Israel go with thee; for the Lord is not with Israel, to wit, with all the children of Ephraim.
8 But if thou wilt go, do it; be strong for the battle: God shall make thee fall before the enemy: for God hath power to help, and to cast down.
9 And Amaziah said to the man of God, But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Israel? And the man of God answered, The Lord is able to give thee much more than this.

Here king Amaziah spent 100 talents of silver - a hefty sum - to hire mercenaries from the northern kingdom, but God said no.

"But what about all this money I spent?"

"The Lord is able to give thee much more than this."

We have our own resources, but God has His. He is able to give you a full self-sufficiency for every good work (2 Cor 9). Whether it be pray in faith, teach a Bible study, encourage the crestfallen, or walk on water, I've heard it will put, where God guides, God provides.

2 Corinthians 12
9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

I think I have no ability to walk on water. So if God calls me to, that's the perfect opportunity to receive His power.

Much love!

We are all in different stages of faith development; and all are not called upon to do the same...

Much love!

I love this! Do you remember the other episode where Jesus and the disciples were crossing the sea and this time Jesus was asleep in the bow of the boat while a storm was raging, and the disciples got all anxious and afraid? And they woke Jesus up and Jesus rebuked them for their lack of faith and calmed the storm?

What do you believe was the lesson in this account? Then I'll tell you what I believe.

My take is that their fear WAS lack of faith??

CHRISTIAN, DON'T PANIC. KEEP CALM.

As to the account of Peter walking on water we need to remember that Peter was always impetuous, and his first impulse was to want to walk on water just like his Master. And then he did walk on water for a while, but went into panic mode very shortly.

When you consider . . . their boats . . .

13 grown men in a boat that's something like 20 ft long, and it was getting swamped in the waves, and Jesus was sleeping in the stern?

This means He was apparently sleeping while sloshing in water, as everyone is all right next to each other.

Psalm 107
23 They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters;
24 These see the works of the LORD, and his wonders in the deep.
25 For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof.
26 They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble.
27 They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wit's end.
28 Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses.
29 He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.
30 Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven.
31 Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

Jesus had absolutely no concern whatsoever. And though He chided them for their lack of faith, He still took care of them. And happened to demonstrate at the same time that YHWH was in fact standing in that little swamped boat.

Much love!

Your turn.
