She DOES intercede by praying for us.
When you ask a friend to pray for you - THEY become intercessors.
Thank you for clarifying this for me BreadOfLife,I never thought of it that way, I learn something new everyday.

Nobody in the Catholic Church claims to have "equal" power to God.
This is yet another one of your distortions.

Nice try . . .
This is true, I have never heard of any of the clergy including the Pope who has said they are equal to God, that would be blasphemous.

Have you been to a Newman Center? It is run by the Dominicans - it is a campus ministry, but welcomes everyone. Dominicans are a preaching order so the harmonies are great and they are good teachers.

I learned a great deal about Catholic teachings that initially bothered me (I joined the church as an adult) and found out many of the issues I had were my own prejudices
No I have never heard of it, thank you for pointing it out to me, I like to rely on my own feelings and through the Holy Spirit I receive from God and Jesus Christ.

LOL...

Huh...?

There is no place in Gods kingdom for the Once and Always Saved ?

According to your Catholic doctrine... HOW MANY Times Is a man required to Become Saved Before his place IS in Gods kingdom?

I wish there were a purgatory! Ha! No second chances after death...I can see how comforting this erroneous doctrine can be.

I wouldn't use the word purgatory myself...but actually it IS something that I hold lightly. ( I have quite a few things which I have not 'thrown out' )
....if I see a pattern in the bible I hold it , I weigh it, I ask God about it...and 'hold it lightly'...unless, and until God shows me one way or the other.

So...as we all know that - ".....our God is a Consuming Fire"
I can see an action where all the dross is burned up in that final Fire- "which will try every mans works of what sort it is.." and what is then left, if anything, is what will remain.
So, at the end of All Things....I do not know...so I can't say either way........yet. :)

It is a belief that would bring much comfort to those who have lost loved ones who were not believers. And, yes, the word itself holds no meaning but like you, I do not know either way.
"if I see a pattern in the bible I hold it , I weigh it, I ask God about it...and 'hold it lightly'...unless, and until God shows me one way or the other." Amen Helen! Hold it lightly until we are shown different! It's the waiting, lol...but His peace keeps us ♥

Limbo, purgatory, heaven....hummm.

Scripture does not seem to be familiar with those terms...

Souls of Unsaved OT men went to HELL, experiencing Agony.

Souls of Saved OT men went to HELL,
Experiencing Comfort.

Jesus being FIRST in ALL things... His soul went to Hell, and DEPART HELL...

Saved souls of OT men have been escorted to Heaven and Wait in the presence of God for their Bodies to be raised in Glory.

UNsaved souls STILL go to Hell, and wait to be raised up "in hell" in Damnation and Judgement and Sentencing.

Saved souls now go directly to Heaven, when they physical death occurs. They WAIT in the presence of God, for their bodies to be Raised in Glory.

Unsaved souls in Hell...in agony, total separation from God....Hoping to be raised to heaven...to the surface of the new earth?
No.

Glory to God,
Taken

@amadeus, this is how I feel about the Catholic church, it brought me to Christ, I have no animosities towards it, we all know what's right and wrong, I've made my own decisions in regards to the Catholic Church.

I love the Blessed Mother, and always will.
I was an active Catholic and an altar boy until I graduated from high school in 1961. During elementary and all through high school my best friends were all Catholic and most altar boys. Those were some of my best memories. We never had trouble with priests like we hear on this forum and other places. One of the priests who taught at a school nearby used to take us to parks on field trips. We never had any trouble. I left to go to college and drifted away after that. I am still in touch with one of my old altar boy friends. He, like me, is an old grandfather now. He remains Catholic and I am what I am as a servant of God.

Dead Bread, the facts point to the one or the other of two conclusions:

1) Your church has for centuries been overrun by catholic "heretics" in positions of authority whose job it is to speak for the papacy, but with uncontrollable tendencies to write "heretical" claims about the pope, catholic doctrine, or rituals, as if some unseen force compelled their writing hands to say things contrary to what is "official" papal dogma...which begs the question: Why has the papacy allowed such heretical, rebellious, blasphemous, inexcusable crimes to be committed against the catholic church by these criminal authoritarians - however well intentioned their efforts may have been - and not exercised such severe punishment against these "heretics" as history proves her well capable, in order to drive out these unholy practices far from the catholic church once and for all?

---or---

2) the papacy is every bit as guilty of sanctioning such blasphemy and these men are no "heretics" at all.

Where are the public denunciations?
Where are the piles of burned books?
Where are the calls of the papacy for these "heretics" to cease and desist?

They don't exist and they never will, and the reason why is when the pope starts working his hocus pocus to sweep the multitudes into the papal fold, the world will be convinced it is Jesus Christ Himself incarnate that sits in on St. Peter's throne, but those who know that the saints go up to "meet the Lord in the air" will not be fooled.

Hi Nancy,
Purgatory is not a 'second chance' it is this:

the work of each will come to light, for the Day will disclose it. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire (itself) will test the quality of each one's work.

If the work stands that someone built upon the foundation, that person will receive a wage.

But if someone's work is burned up, that one will suffer loss; the person will be saved, but only as through fire.

Peace be with you!

That passage has been MISAPPLIED by the RCC to Purgatory. It speaks about the works of Christians and how their value is determined by Christ.

The metaphors of gold, silver, and precious stones apply to works which will have eternal value. Wood, hay, and stubble apply to works which will be worthless. Hence they will be metaphorically burned up. It is not the souls and spirits of Christians but THEIR WORKS which are being judged.

But if someone's work is burned up, that one will suffer loss; the person will be saved, but only as through fire.

Catholics should understand that Purgatory is PURE FICTION. Souls and spirits either go to be with Christ (if saved by grace) or go to Hades (if unsaved). However, since Purgatory is a cash cow, why give it up?

You know Phony,

You’ve done a nice job of describing every organization run by human beings on Earth; yet, instead of simply acknowledging the evil tendencies of humanity, you are determined to prove your false prophetess’ tired prejudices about the Catholic Church.

It has become exhausting watching you parade the same pedestrian questions across this board. You are not honest in you inquiries, all you seem to care about is planting doubt. Every one of your questions has an answer Phony.....you just don’t like the answers provided.

I think we all need a vacation....

Hi Philip
Yes, ByGrace said pretty much the same thing. Thanks :)
Just out of curiosity, when I was RC, we were told to pray for those in "purgatory" and, I wonder if that is still taught? Can we even pray God is merciful to those that passed on, who did not accept Jesus as Lord and Savior, ?
Thanks!

Hello phoneman,
I would gladly start by looking at the early church with you ( perhaps a new thread?)

We can begin by looking at Clement of Rome, Polycarp in Smyrna and Ignatius in Antioch... If you have others from that time period to examine feel free to list them...

My first point: Jesus, in his letters to the churches, has nothing but praise for Smyrna. Polycarp was the bishop of Smyrna, and commends Ignatius in Antioch.
As far as I know, no one challenges the claim that Ignatius was bishop of Antioch around 100 AD... Have you read his letters?

Peace!
I'm acquainted with the ECF's writings somewhat, because as another dear sister in Christ in this forum has pointed out, the writings of the ECFs are not inspired, though they offer much light on church history. I'm especially impressed with Polycarp's devotion to God and his bravery for offering up his life as a testimony written in his blood.

Have you read what Socrates Scholasticus has written about the fact that the seventh day Sabbath was kept universally as the day of weekly rest? Or the writings of Salminius Sozomenus and St. Patrick about the same?
