'Behold, I will send My messenger,
.. and he shall prepare the way before me:
.... and the Lord, whom ye seek,
...... shall suddenly come to His temple,
........ even
The Messenger of The Covenant,
.......... whom ye delight in:
behold, He shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.
.. But who may abide the day of His coming?
.... and who shall stand when He appeareth?
...... for He is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap:
And He shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver:
.. and He shall purify the sons of Levi,
.... and purge them as gold and silver,
...... that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness.
Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem
.. be pleasant unto the LORD,
.... as in the days of old,
...... and as in former years.'

Hello and how are you? but I think, 'The Messenger of The Covenant' is Jesus Christ. A covenant is a promise between God and man, and the covenant referred to here is the covenant God made to send His children a redeemer.

Its a little puzzling whether the messenger & the messenger of the covenant are one & the same person in Malachi 3:1 1"I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the LORD you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come," says the LORD Almighty. Could the messenger of the covenant be referring to the lord & the messenger referring to john the Baptist Luke 7:27 ?

Hello @firsthings1st,

Thank you for kindly responding to my request, and taking the time to answer.
firstthings1st:- Could the messenger of the covenant be referring to The Lord & the messenger referring to John the Baptist
* Yes, I agree, they are. Yet I find it strange that this term, 'the messenger of the covenant', should not be referred to elsewhere, especially when followed by the words, 'whom ye delight in'. This term was obviously well known.

* Looking now at the marginal notes in my Bible I see references to Exodus (noted below) in relation to the messenger of the covenant. I have always found this concept hard to understand. Especially in the light of Hebrews 1:4-7 & Hebrews 1:13.

'My Messenger':- John the Baptist (as you say) - Matthew 3:3; Matthew 11:10; Isaiah 40:3-5
'The Messenger of the Covenant' :- The Messiah - The Lord Jesus Christ:- Exodus (23:20-23) & (Exodus (33:14-16) - This was also the angel of the Covenant.

'Behold, I send an Angel before thee,
.. to keep thee in the way,
.... and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared.
...... Beware of him, and obey his voice, provoke him not;
........ for he will not pardon your transgressions: for My name is in him.
But if thou shalt indeed obey his voice, and do all that I speak;
.. then I will be an enemy unto thine enemies,
.... and an adversary unto thine adversaries.
For mine Angel shall go before thee,
.. and bring thee in unto the Amorites, and the Hittites, and the Perizzites,
.... and the Canaanites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites:
...... and I will cut them off.'

Exodus (23:20-23)

'And He (God) said,
.."My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest."

And he (Moses) said unto Him,
.. "If Thy presence go not with me,
.... carry us not up hence.
...... For wherein shall it be known here that I and thy people have found grace in Thy sight?
........ is it not in that thou goest with us?
so shall we be separated,
.. I and Thy people,
....
from all the people that are upon the face of the earth."'
(Exodus 33:14-16)

Praise God! - that one day I shall know even as I am known.

Thank you.

"Could the messenger of the covenant be referring to the lord & the messenger referring to john the Baptist "

This is just what I was thinking as well First. Then I read what @charity wrote, here esp. :

" 'My Messenger':- John the Baptist (as you say) - Matthew 3:3; Matthew 11:10; Isaiah 40:3-5
'The Messenger of the Covenant' :- The Messiah - The Lord Jesus Christ:- Exodus (23:20-23) & (Exodus (33:14-16) - This was also the angel of the Covenant."

I do believe that the Jehovah's Witnesses think that Jesus will be Michael the Arc Angel...it is not clear to me. But, wow - lot's of material for study/prayer/meditation!

'But we see Jesus,
Who was made a little lower than the angels
for the suffering of death,
crowned with glory and honour;
that He by the grace of God
should taste death for every man.'

(Hebrews 2:9)

Hi @Nancy,

It is because Jehovah's Witnesses say this that I shrink from this concept; for there is no way that He is Michael the Archangel. Yes, there is lots of material here to consider and search the Scriptures concerning, I agree,

* I want to enter two more verses that I have found relating to this in the margin of another Bible which I keep upstairs. :) - Isaiah 63:9 & Haggai 2:7.

@firstthings1st & @Nancy:-

'In all their affliction He was afflicted,
and the angel of His presence saved them:
in His love and in His pity He redeemed them;
and He bare them,
and carried them all the days of old.'

-------------
'According to the word that I covenanted with you
when ye came out of Egypt,
so My spirit remaineth among you:
fear ye not.
For thus saith the LORD of hosts;
"Yet once, it is a little while,
and I will shake the heavens, and the earth,
and the sea, and the dry land;
And I will shake all nations,
and the desire of all nations shall come:
and I will fill this house with glory,
saith the LORD of hosts.'

Praise His Holy Name! For He is faithful, and He will do it!

Thank you both

Amen, I took a deeper look at the scriptures, and they seem to be within the OP, I may add that I have read: And there came a voice out of the cloud,
saying, This is my beloved Son in whom I'm well pleased:
They Both spoke the same message to repent, for the kingdom of God is at hand.

MATTHEW CHAPTER 3 KJV

And when Jesus was transfigured:
The Transfiguration

(Matthew 17:1-13; Mark 9:1-13; 2 Peter 1:16-21)

Luke 9:28-36

28And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray. 29And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering. 30And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias: 31Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem. 32But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him. 33And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said. 34While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud. 35And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him. 36And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.

Love always, Walter

It is none other than the Lord Jesus Christ Himself who is the Messenger of the Covenant. The Covenant being the New Covenant, which went into effect the day Christ died on the Cross. The context makes this perfectly clear.

HE IS THE LORD WHOM ISRAEL WILL EVENTUALLY SEEK
...and the Lord, whom ye seek...

HE WILL SUDDENLY COME INTO HIS MILLENNIAL TEMPLE
...shall suddenly come to his temple...

HE HAS ANNOUNCED THE NEW COVENANT WITH HIS BLOOD
...even the messenger of the covenant...

THE BELIEVING REMNANT OF ISRAEL WILL DELIGHT IN HIM
...whom ye delight in...

HIS SECOND COMING IS GUARANTEED
...behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.

NONE WILL ABIDE THE WRATH OF THE LAMB AT HIS COMING
2 But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap:

HE WILL PURIFY ISRAEL AT HIS SECOND COMING
3 And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver...

REDEEMED PRIESTS WILL PRESENT OFFERINGS IN THE MILLENNIAL TEMPLE
...that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness.

The prophecy of Ezekiel provides the background to this prophecy of Malachi. Christians will only fully understand everything at that time.

Hello Chris,
I'm sorry it took me so long to reply here...have been otherwise interrupted...or, um..engaged lol.

"'In all their affliction He was afflicted,
and the angel of His presence saved them:..."

This does sound like Jesus...and like you said, lot's of material to consider there yet, like yourself...I too shrink from it but, it would be an awesome study.

Well - I hope you finally are getting some sleep!
YES, He is crazy faithful! ♥

Thank you for responding, @Enoch111, I would like to discuss the sentence quoted above (The covenant being the New Covenant, which went into effect the day Christ died on the cross) above with you when I can.
As you will see in the epistle to the Hebrews, the shed blood of Christ ushered in the New Covenant. And that blood was shed at Calvary. So that is when the New Covenant was ratified with the blood of Christ, and went into effect immediately.

As you well know, Charity, the temple at Jerusalem was CENTRAL to the effectiveness of the Old Covenant under the Law of Moses. The day Christ died, and loudly proclaimed the Victor's cry "IT IS FINISHED", something amazing and terrifying happened within the temple at Jerusalem:

MATTHEW 27
50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice ["It Is Finished"], yielded up the ghost. [dismissed His spirit]
51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;
52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,
53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.

54 Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.

On that day God sent a clear message to Israel -- the way into the Holy of Holies was no longer barred, because Christ made a way into the Heavenly Sanctuary with His own blood. Therefore the veil in the temple was SUPERNATURALLY TORN from top to bottom. Which meant that the Levitical priesthood was finished, the temple sacrifices were finished, and everything that belong to the Old Covenant was now null and void.

But Israel did not heed that message, and continued with the temple sacrifices for another 40 years, in spite of what Christ had accomplished. Eventually the Romans destroyed that temple.

Is it referring to the faithful remnant of Israel during/after the Great Tribulation?

Seems that Malachi carries a strong sense of weight and expectation by the remnant for the Redeemer.

Thank you all for your input, it is appreciated. :)

Personally, I can't get beyond the wording, 'The Messenger of The Covenant', for I believe that this title is associated with the original covenant made with Israel, as it will be with the New Covenant. This is why I have been seeking references within the Old Testament in order to understand this title, as those who heard the prophecy of Malachi would have understood it. I realise that the Lord Jesus Christ is, 'the mediator of the New Covenant' (Hebrews 12:24): 'For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.' (1 Timothy 2:5-6)

Praise God!

The Old Covenant was, 'ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator' (Galatians 3:19)

'The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet
from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me;
unto him ye shall hearken;
According to all that thou desiredst of the LORD thy God
in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying,

"Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God,
neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not."
And the LORD said unto me,
"They have well spoken that which they have spoken.
I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren,
like unto thee,
and will put My words in His mouth;
and He shall speak unto them all that I shall command Him.
And it shall come to pass,
that whosoever will not hearken
unto My words
which He shall speak in My Name,
I will require it of him".'
(Deuteronomy 18:15-19)

'Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me?
the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself:
but the Father that dwelleth in me, He doeth the works.'

(John 14:10)

* Compare with references in #3 & #5.

* These are my thoughts, I will leave them with you. I hope you can follow the line of my thinking. [ I was a little concerned this morning when I read your posts, for I found that I didn't seem to be able to comprehend them. Not because you had not expressed yourselves clearly, but I simply could not take it in. This makes me think that I have perhaps spent too much time online, and need to take a break. So I may be offline for a while - if I can keep myself away that is] :).

Thank you again

in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying,

"Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God,
neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not."
And the LORD said unto me,
"They have well spoken that which they have spoken.
I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren,
like unto thee,
and will put My words in His mouth;
and He shall speak unto them all that I shall command Him.
And it shall come to pass,
that whosoever will not hearken
unto My words
which He shall speak in My Name,
I will require it of him".'
(Deuteronomy 18:15-19)

'Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me?
the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself:
but the Father that dwelleth in me, He doeth the works.'

(John 14:10)

* Compare with references in #3 & #5.

Good morning Chris,
The Messenger of the Covenant seems elusive to me. There is a Spurgeon message about it The Messenger of the Covenant by C. H. Spurgeon

I have not read it yet and will have to come back to this as, I will be busy for a few hours starting at 9 this morning (it is 8:36 here now)
I can't seem to get away from some of the "angel" verses! lol. This will be interesting...

BTW Chris, I do not think I have a good enough grasp on this subject so, please do not think our or at least my post was very clear...I don't even remember what I had written! Ha. It's not you my friend...it is you who DO have a good grasp on this, not me...my study habits are not good - I read many commentaries so I can get the gist of things when It is not clear in The Word to me. See you later!

Hi @Nancy,

Thank you for your kind words. Thank you too for the book title and Author, I will look that up and see if it is possible to view online. I hope you have a good day.

Spurgeon is saying exactly what I have said -- Christ is the Messenger of the Covenant. We should not be talking about angels since the context excludes angels and focuses on the LORD. And the prophecy is related to the Second Coming of Christ and the Millennial Temple.

Hello @Enoch111,

I agree that the Lord Jesus Christ is 'The Messenger of the Covenant', but why is He called that? And why only here in Malachi 3:1? This is why I have been looking back into the Old Testament, to verses which I hoped would give me answers to that question.

* Please bear with me, for I will get there. :)

Thank you.

'Behold, I will send My messenger,
.. and he shall prepare the way before me:
.... and the Lord, whom ye seek,
...... shall suddenly come to His temple,
........ even
The Messenger of The Covenant,
.......... whom ye delight in:
behold, He shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.
.. But who may abide the day of His coming?
.... and who shall stand when He appeareth?
...... for He is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap:
And He shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver:
.. and He shall purify the sons of Levi,
.... and purge them as gold and silver,
...... that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness.
Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem
.. be pleasant unto the LORD,
.... as in the days of old,
...... and as in former years.'

(Malachi 3:1-4)

Hello there,

These words, 'The Messenger of The Covenant' do not appear to have been repeated anywhere else in Scripture.

If you have done a study on this, would you please let me benefit from your findings.

Thank you

Psalm 15:1-5 KJV
[1] Lord, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill? [2] He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart. [3] He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour. [4] In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; but he honoureth them that fear the Lord. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not. [5] He that putteth not out his money to usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved.
