When we feel the pain so sharply in us, I expect that it is that "new man" within that is hurting within us. We remember when he approached Lazarus lying dead in the tomb, it is written:Psalm 51:17 My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, God, you will not despise.
Jesus also refers to this scripture...

This heart is one that is ready to turn away from what brought us to such a place. But this is exactly what brings us to our knees seeking His forgiveness. The pain associated with confronting our sin becomes too unbearable.
"Jesus wept." John 11:35
