33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace.
In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer;
I have overcome the world.
-KJV

I took it out of context, sorry.
What do you really think this means, like say, you are having troubles...how would this or how
do you apply this...I need to understand better.

An easy thing for a newbie to say is: "Now, how am I, in trouble, going to find good cheer just
cuz Jesus overcame this place?"
Whatdaya say to them? Help. Thanks. :)

(If you focus on him, be uplifted by him and his example...you will be in good cheer?...no matter what?
Is it that simple? Is that what I say?)

I see it as the war has already been won, even though we remain on the battlefield.
Thus knowing that victory is already assured in our Lord Jesus Christ, we can remain at peace and even joyful even in times where we seem surrounded by darkness.
Never dispair, indeed HE will give us all we need to stand and endure through any and all tribulations..

Fear not! And let your light shine in the darkness!

Christ IS risen!
Alleluia!

Joy and Peace are fruit of the Spirit to be borne by those who are partakers of Jesus' gift of salvation found at the Cross of Calvary for the forgiveness of our sins.

It's different from the great tribulation of Matthew 24.

John 16.33 refers to the general tribulation principle, and the blessed fact that the Lord Jesus has overcome the world, and therefore His pilgrim people have every reason to be of good cheer. :)

Jesus overcame the "world" of the flesh of the man Jesus. He overcame all of the temptations within himself so that he could be that perfect unblemished sacrifice according to His Father's will. Because He did it, it is possible for us to do it also... that is to overcome the "world" of flesh, our temptations:

"Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good." Rom 12:21

And what is this "good"?

And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God." Mark 10:18

That is to say, God, the One Good in us can overcome the evil ways within us if we will allow it.

That was just Jesus saying, "Follow me--we win!"

Ask people in trouble, "Would you like to hear that everything is going to be okay? 'Cause there is just one way that that happens. Would you like to know how?"

To me the passage is assurance. Remember He said: His peace He gives...not the peace as the world gives ...which I take to mean comfort in empty things that do not last ...but peace that overcomes ‘emptiness’ and this world. As Jesus slept in the boat in the midst of the tempest and ragging waves...we are to be in the world but not of the world. Subject to tribulations but knowing a peace that transcends the tribulations in trusting God and knowing He is faithful who promised. Paul said if we only have hope in this life and this world...we are of the most miserable. The assurance being in the tasting of the good word and the world to come; knowing the world to come has overcome the tribulations of this world and death through Christ. Galatians 6:14 But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.
...this world’s tribulations are crucified and holds no power over the children born of God ...for they are of the world to come where there is peace that is outside of this world. Notice there are opposites in the following passage; as in “the world to come” and “this world” ...we experience both: 2 Corinthians 6:8-10 By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report: as deceivers, and yet true; [9] As unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and, behold, we live; as chastened, and not killed; [10] As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.
...honour, good report, true, well known, “behold, we live” ..not killed, always rejoicing, making many rich, possessing all things...blessing. 1 John 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

John 14:28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.
—whatsoever is born of God overcomes the world. Is assurance.

Blessings in Christ Jesus! Jesus knew that they would be scattered before He said this. "in me" is the key to this. In Christ Jesus. This peace I have, just as promised, because of being One with Him. The Lord is not anxious or hyper, He is perfectly calm. He is the peace that can walk through any situation for He has already overcome the world. The world will beat us up, and we will have tribulation, but just pray, and watch The Lord restore you with His peace. To pray unceasing eventually leads us into walking in The Spirit. And when we walk in The Spirit we will not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

I wanted to add that praying unceasing does not always mean on our knees, but through out the day, no matter what the day may bring.

I don't believe you took anything out of context. You quoted a verse and asked questions about it. That's not taking it out of context.

"These things I have spoken into you"

Jesus was telling them about his death, and it was going to be hard on them and for them. They were going to be sad he left, but beyond that, they would also be ridiculed and persecuted.

"that in me ye might have peace."

I see dual meanings to this:. first, he was going to physically come back. Second, peace would be found in his name and in him. Not in the world.

There is a third... Jesus was speaking to his disciples who would become Apostles. He wanted THEM to finish/continue the ministry for him. Jesus was the foundation but he wanted the Apostles to build upon it and even be a part of that foundation. In the verses before this, Jesus said if he doesn't leave the Holy Spirit (the Comforter and Spirit of Truth) would not come to them.

I"the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world"

There will always be trouble in this natural rhelm until God decides to put a stop to it. We find peace in Jesus though we are troubled on earth. And we are persuaded to keep our eyes on better things to come.

I am the Good Shepherd; I am the Lamb

Now you are lost
Wandering, seeking a way,
In the labyrinth of the world
You are loved

Now I have found you
I know you and I know your pasture
I’ve been here all along
You are loved

I am the Shepherd
I am the sheep
I have found the Way
I am the Way
You are loved

I really appreciate all the participation ....I could tag some others to notice the thread ... but what if I forget someone?
Or I might blow it cuz I forgot a cap in their name.
Thank you all so far.

Question, so if I'm talking to a newbie, maybe an ex-Buddhist or a questioning Jew...and they ask, "Peace in his name?
Huh? My wife is divorcing me. I can't pay the bills...What are you talking about?"

What next?
I'm thinking, "Read Jesus' words...take them to heart...apply them for a week."

I would say,

First, lean on the support of your community,
Second, you are welcome in my community, as well
Help is found where Christ is,
Within His followers

Prayer is not enough
We need to communicate action

It goes with this Scripture...

1 Cor 10:13
13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, Who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
KJV
