I think it as relatively simple.

Genesis 2:2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

After this, all of God's works would be done through men. He had given man dominion over the earth, and His work was done.

Similarly when Jesus said, "It is finished," he was done working for the Father and was ready to enter the eternal rest. Thereafter others would carry on.

Does “It Is Finished” Mean All of God’s Work Have Been Completed? <--- OP

No.

Isa 55
[
11] So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

John 19
[
28] After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.
[29] Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.
[30] When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

More thereafter, for men to accomplish...
More thereafter, for angels to accomplish
More thereafter, of Gods fulfillment.

Rev 16
[
17] And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done.

Rev 21
[6] And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.

Glory to God,
Taken

Suggest they are all the same “it is finished”. Not three separate but the same. 1) “it is finished” on earth 2) out of the temple of heaven, from the throne “It is done.” ...and then the third “It is done.” ...Come. Drink. Revelation 21:5-6 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. [6] And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.

Hebrews 9:26
[26] For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.

Hebrews 9:28
[28] So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

Does “It Is Finished” Mean All of God’s Work Have Been Completed?
By Qianhe

Every Christian knows that the Lord Jesus said, “It is finished” when He was upon the cross, but what did He actually mean by saying “It is finished”? Some brothers and sisters believe that the Lord saying “It is finished” proves that God’s work to save mankind was completely finished and that He would no longer perform any work of salvation; there are also some brothers and sisters who say that, by saying these words, the Lord Jesus meant only that His great work of redemption was finished, and not that God would no longer perform any work of salvation after that … Today, let’s discuss together what the true meaning of the words “It is finished” spoken by the Lord Jesus actually is.

As we all know, at the end of the Age of Law, because mankind was becoming more and more corrupted by Satan and was unable to keep the law, they were all in danger of being put to death by the law. In order to redeem man from sin, the Lord Jesus became flesh, He healed the sick and cast out demons and He bestowed on man endless grace. Ultimately, He was crucified for man’s sake, He gave His holy flesh as a sin offering, and He redeemed man from sin. After that, as long as we believed in the Lord and confessed our sins to Him, then our sins could be forgiven, and we could enjoy the grace the Lord bestowed on us. Mankind was also no longer to be put to death by the law, and we were able to live on. This is the true meaning of the Lord Jesus’ words when He said, “It is finished.”

jesus-on-the-cross-It-Is-Finished.jpg

What is undeniable, however, is that, although we have accepted the Lord Jesus’ salvation and our sins have been forgiven, our sinful nature still exists and we continue to live in a repeated cycle of sinning in the daytime and confessing at night, totally incapable of casting off the bonds of sin. For example, we often tell lies and commit sins, we have greedy desires and wicked thoughts, we can be jealous of others and can hate others, our hearts are filled with arrogance, deceit and deception, and we are even capable of following worldly trends, lusting for riches and coveting vanity, and when we encounter trials and tribulations, we even blame God, and so on. The Bible says, “For the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). “Holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord” (Hebrews 12:14). The Lord Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, Whoever commits sin is the servant of sin. And the servant stays not in the house for ever: but the son stays ever” (John 8:34–35). God says, “You must know what kind of people I desire; those who are impure are not permitted to enter into the kingdom, those who are impure are not permitted to besmirch the holy ground. Though you may have done much work, and have worked for many years, in the end if you are still deplorably filthy—it is intolerable to the law of Heaven that you wish to enter My kingdom! From the foundation of the world until today, never have I offered easy access to My kingdom to those who curry favor with Me. This is a heavenly rule, and no one can break it!” God is holy and His disposition is righteous, and His kingdom permits no filthy people to enter. If we have only had our sins forgiven, if our inner sinful nature has not been uprooted, and we are still capable of committing sins and resisting God, then we will be unqualified to meet face to face with God or to enter into His kingdom—this is decided by God’s righteous disposition.

In the beginning, the mankind whom God created were unsullied. They lived in the Garden of Eden, they heeded God’s words and they worshiped God. Later, Adam and Eve were deceived by the serpent and ate the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and thus they were corrupted by Satan. In order to save man from the domain of Satan and to enable man to detach themselves from sin and be purified, God began His plan to save mankind and began to work to save man, one stage at a time. For example, God proclaimed the law through Moses and He guided man in their lives on earth, so that they would know what sin was and how to make offerings; later, once again according to the needs of corrupt mankind, God began the Age of Grace, the Lord Jesus became flesh, He gave to man the way of repentance, and He was then crucified for man’s sake, thereby redeeming man from sin. And yet our sinful nature continues to exist, and we carry on living in a cycle of sinning and confessing, powerless to escape. We have not been purified, we are unworthy to enter into God’s kingdom, and we still need God to perform a further stage of salvation.

The Lord Jesus prophesied, “I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. However, when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will show you things to come” (John 16:12–13). “And if any man hear My words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. He that rejects Me, and receives not My words, has one that judges him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day” (John 12:47–48). The Bible predicted, “For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God” (1 Peter 4:17).

judgment-must-begin-at-the-house-of-God.jpg

From these prophecies, we can see clearly that, when the Lord returns in the last days, He shall express the truth and perform the work of judgment beginning in God’s house. That is, He shall come to thoroughly cleanse man and save man; He shall uproot the sin within man and enable man to cast off sin and be purified, so that we may attain true salvation and enter into God’s kingdom. Only then will all the work of God’s management plan be finished. This precisely fulfills the prophecy in the Book of Revelation: “It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give to him that is thirsty of the fountain of the water of life freely. He that overcomes shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and fornicators, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone: which is the second death” (Revelation 21:6–8). In the end, God will lead into His kingdom all those who have undergone judgment and chastisement and who have cast off sin and attained purification, and they shall enjoy eternal blessings from God. Those who have not been purified by God’s work of judgment, however, who are still utterly filthy and corrupt, who are still filled with the corrupt dispositions of Satan and are capable of resisting God, will be weeded out and destroyed and cast into the lake which burns with fire and brimstone. Only then will the words “It is done” be fulfilled.

God is the Lord of creation and His wisdom surpasses the heavens, so how can we human beings fathom His work? Faced with God’s work, what we as created beings should do is accept and obey it. In those early days, because the Pharisees clung to their own misconceptions and refused to accept the Lord Jesus’ work, they ended up losing their chance to be redeemed by God. Now, if we continue to rely on our misconceptions and imaginings, and we believe that, by saying “It is finished,” the Lord Jesus meant that God’s salvation work was completely finished and that we don’t need to accept God’s work of judgment beginning in God’s house in the last days, then we will be following in the footsteps of the Pharisees. We won’t then be able to welcome the Lord’s return, we will totally lose out on God’s salvation in the last days, and we will be weeded out and abandoned. The Lord Jesus once said, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you” (Matthew 7:7). “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3). The Lord is faithful and righteous, and He does not favor anyone; He bestows His blessings on those who seek with an open mind and who focus on listening to His voice. Only by not clinging to our own misconceptions concerning things we don’t understand and by praying and seeking more can we obtain the Lord’s enlightenment and guidance, and we can then welcome the second coming of the Lord.
Does this seem to teach that salvation can be lost by a true believer in the Lord Jesus?

If so, John 10.28-29 and Romans 8.38-39 strongly indicate otherwise.

Thanks ...would disagree. All one center and point; which testifies of the Son..testifying of the New Thing God has done in “It is finished”. How many “behold, I Make all things New” do we need? Let Him thirsty come and drink of the Living Water. It is the entire message of the Word beginning with “Let there be light” to John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

"How is it that ye sought Me?
wist ye not that I must be about My Father's business?'

(Luke 2:49)

'Jesus saith unto them,
"My meat is to do the will of Him that sent Me, and to finish His work.'

(John 4:34)

'These words spake Jesus, and lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said,
"Father, the hour is come; glorify Thy Son, that Thy Son also may glorify Thee:
As Thou hast given Him power over all flesh,
that He should give eternal life to as many as Thou hast given Him.
And this is life eternal, that they might know Thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom Thou hast sent.
I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.
And now, O Father, glorify Thou Me with Thine Own Self
with the glory which I had with Thee before the world was.
I have manifested Thy Name unto the men which Thou gavest Me out of the world:
Thine they were, and Thou gavest them Me; and they have kept Thy word.
Now they have known that all things whatsoever Thou hast given Me are of Thee.
For I have given unto them the words which Thou gavest Me;
and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from Thee,
and they have believed that Thou didst send Me. ... '

(John 17:1-8)

(John 19:30)

'Therefore doth My Father love Me,
because I lay down My life, that I might take it again.
No man taketh it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself.
I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again.

This commandment have I received of My Father.'

'For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them:
but the word preached did not profit them,
not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.
For we which have believed do enter into rest,
as He said, "As I have sworn in My wrath, if they shall enter into My rest:
although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.'

(Hebrews 4:2-3)

'Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner:
but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;
Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling,
not according to our works, but according to His Own purpose and grace,
which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ,
who hath abolished death,
and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel
:'
(2 Timothy 1:8-10)

'Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ,
according to the faith of God's elect,
and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness;
In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;
But hath in due times manifested His word through preaching,
which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour; ... '

Praise God!

Still diisagree.

What Jesus came to do, He did, He accomplish-ED, He Finished, He Returned To the mouth of God, as God SAID He would when what He was sent TO DO was Acomplished...THAT TASK...Accomplis-ed...
PAST, OVER, Finished, and Jesus RETURNED TO God IN Heaven.

WHAT SHALL "BE DONE"...is NOT YET Accomplish-ED...

Prophecy foretold ALL the THINGS tha MUST come to pass, happen; which are "preparations" and LEADING UP TO...WHAT SHALL BE...."DONE".

And Every prophecy coming to pass, happening, ARE "SIGNS" for men to Observe, thet REVEALS...it is getting closer to the DAY, ALL shall be Accomplish-ed....ie DONE.

When it IS "DONE"....
A COMPLETE SEPARATION SHALL BE ACCOMPLISH-ED.

There will be no BARRIER (like now) BETWEEN HEAVEN and EARTH.
Both HEAVEN and EARTH shall be renewed, VOID OF ANY CORRUPTION.
ALL inhabitants of Heaven "AND" Earth SHALL BE Holy, VOID of ANY Corruption.

^ THAT has NOT yet come into fruition.
WHEN THAT Does come into fruition...It will be called "DONE".

Glory to God,
Taken

It is finished:
My mission is finished...I've done all I came to do ... the job, my job is completed.(?)
Yes, the job that remains belongs to men:

"And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth." John 11:43
Here Jesus had finished His work to bring Lazarus to Life with His words, but then...

"And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go." John 11:44

He addressed the other men there to do the loosing! He was now Alive, but still bound! Bringing him to Life was finished, but releasing him from bondage was still necessary.

31 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
John 19

A simple observation of such a statement is Jesus's suffering on the cross is finished.
Up until this point Jesus was doing a ministry, a choice of will against temptation.

The interpretation is what did Jesus's ministry achieve. Clearly His life on earth had come to an end because he died.
By Jesus saying it is finished, he is confirming it was not a mistake, but this was His intention all along, the completion of His goal.

And this was important to answer the point the cross was defeat and failure of Gods ministry to earth.
A lot of the gospel of John is giving the inside track to the last week of Jesus's ministry, which the other gospels did not touch on that much.

This sentence also answers the point that some have invented that Christ fought spiritual powers in hell, to win and proclaim victory, when actually Jesus dying and forgiving those who killed Him was the atoning sacrifice for all the sins of those who have faith in Him.

In the end, God will lead into His kingdom all those who have undergone judgment and chastisement and who have cast off sin and attained purification, and they shall enjoy eternal blessings from God.
"Finished" means finished.

Not only did Jesus say it perfectly correct, it was confirmed:

Revelation 13:8
"All who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world."

...But some believe the manifest reading of the will and the judgement to be in real time. It's not.

John 19:19 "And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS."

It was customary that when a person was crucified, the charge was written above his head on the cross. It is interesting that even on the cross Jesus was identified as King. This was Pilates last time to get back at the religious leaders that had forced the whole issue, and caused Jesus death.

John 19:20 "This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin."

The place where Pilate had Jesus crucified was visible to the whole city, and where most of the people would pass by on their way in or out of the city of Jerusalem.

John 19:21 "Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, "Write not, `The King of the Jews';' but that He said, I am King of the Jews."

This was Pilates last jab at those Jewish leaders that threatened him. It wasn't a mistake that the sign read as it did, for this is the message that Pilate was telling the world.

John 19:22 "Pilate answered, "What I have written I have written."

Thank God that Pilate wrote the truth. Jesus is the King of Kings and Pilate announced it to the world. Jesus correct title is not King of the Jews, but King of all Israel, Jews included.

John 19:23 "Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also His coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.

This coat was very valuable, and to expensive to tare into pieces. This is why they will cast lots to see who will get the coat. There was a reason why the "coat was without seam", it was because it was a "high priest garment". The high priest garment had no seams because seams collect dust and foreign matter that would make the garment unfit to enter the "holy of Holies". The casting of lots, the seamless garment, even the parting of the under garment, all are the fulfilling of God detailed plan of the ages.

John 19:24 "They said therefore among themselves, "Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall:" that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, "They parted My raiment among them, and for My vesture they did cast lots." These things therefore the soldiers did."

Do you think this was an accident that these soldiers cast lots for Jesus coat? David prophesied in Psalm 22:18; "They part my garment among them, and cast lots upon my vesture."

John 19:25 "Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene."

There were four women close to Jesus standing close to that cross.

John 19:26 "When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple standing by, whom He loved, He saith unto His mother, "Woman, behold thy son!"

Jesus saw His mother Mary, and John [the author of this book], the son of His mother's sister Salome. Though this may sound like Jesus was disrespectful of His mother, it is not given in a disrespectful way in the original text. This disciple that He loved was his cousin John, the nephew of His mother Mary.

John 19:27 "Then saith He to the disciple, "Behold thy mother!" And from that hour that disciple [John] took her unto his own home."

Joseph had already passed on to the Father, and now John is assigned by Jesus to take care of His mother. Jesus was telling John to take care of her as though she were your own mother.

John 19:28 "After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, "I thirst."

Jesus is stating that at this point in time all the Scripture from the prophets of the Old Testament has been fulfilled and come to pass. There is a deep significance here. Jesus saw the casting of the lots and knew that all that the Scripture that were foretold were finished and fulfilled. Jesus had accomplished every part of the prophecy that He came to fulfill; Even in His asking for something to drink, He was fulfilling Scripture. In Psalm 69:21 "They gave me also gall for my meat; and in My thirst they gave me vinegar to drink." This also had to come to pass.

Psalm 69:22 "Let their table become a snare before them: and that which should have been for their welfare, let it become a trap."

Their religion should have been for their welfare, but when they turned their worship to the false doctrines and traditions, it became their trap. In defense of their false doctrines and traditions they planned the death of Christ.

This happened in Jesus day, and it will also happen again in these latter days. The very religion they practice, and traditions that they follow will lead them into the trap of the deception of Satan, the Antichrist. Why? Because they are so bound up in their traditions such as the rapture theory, and other acceptable dogma, that they will believe the Antichrist to be the Messiah in ignorance, because they have been taught to do so, just as those Kenite priests had taught the Jews in Jesus day.

John 19:29 "Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to His mouth."

This was a poor man's wine and the soldiers meant to wet Jesus lips. Following this act, all prophecy is fulfilled and the conclusion is ready.

John 19:30 "When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, He said, "It is finished:" and He bowed His head, and gave up the ghost.

When Jesus stated "It is finished", He was quoting from the last line of Psalm 22, with the word "Finished" in the Greek text, the same as the Hebrew word "done". This verse suggests that Jesus kept His head erect, until He laid down His live, as was stated in John 10:18

John 10:18 "No man taketh it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of My Father."

It is clear from Luke 23:44 that the promise that Jesus gave to the malefactor was given before the darkness came. "And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. The sixth hour of the day is noon, and the ninth hour is 3:00 P.M.

Is this the end of the story, or just the end of the beginning?
In revelations Jesus talks of a door. The cross is the door to the path, but not walking the path makes the door worthless.
It is like having a car that could take you to safety, and then never using it but believing you are safe because you could use it.

It if finished.... What does that mean... Is an interesting question, and one that pops up with regularity. I was very curious as to what the poster was offering.
As we all know, at the end of the Age of Law,
He almost lost me here. There has never been an Age of Law, the inference being that people were saved by law, and that law keeping was the means by which people came to God. The just shall live by faith is a universal concept common to both testaments.
But I continued to read because I'm a sucker for punishment and came to this....

we continue to live in a repeated cycle of sinning in the daytime and confessing at night, totally incapable of casting off the bonds of sin.
Groan. '*sigh*'. If there is ever a idea that
Irks me on modern Christianity is the much accepted idea that Christians continue to sin repeatedly and are incapable of stopping, despite what Christ did, and is doing.
Seriously considered going to another thread at this stage, but hey, what else is one to do on a sunny evening? So, I read further, and got this far....

God began the Age of Grace,
Doubling down on the first error, as if Adam and Eve didn't witness grace... And then...
when the Lord returns in the last days, He shall express the truth and perform the work of judgment beginning in God’s house. That is, He shall come to thoroughly cleanse man and save man; He shall uproot the sin within man and enable man to cast off sin and be purified, so that we may attain true salvation and enter into God’s kingdom.
Unfortunately, if anyone is waiting for Jesus to come and cleanse him from all sin and make him holy enough for heaven, then he will be to late. Today is the day of salvation.
If Jesus cannot free you from sin in this life, then He is not the Saviour we need. If He cannot free you from sin now, then Satan is stronger than He. If you do not have the faith in Christ now, today, to keep you from sinning, then you do not have the faith to attain that righteousness that comes by faith and overcomes sin.
I have up reading after that. As to the question, is it finished? Obviously something did... But what???? Not our salvation that's for sure, because without the resurrection we have no more hope than if Jesus didn't come at all.

Too many confuse temptation with sin and self condemnation with God's rejection.
Life is a mess of local actions, feelings painted on a scene of eternity. See the truth, and things change, actions will be different.
Many talk about lust, desire, when such things are just repression gone mad. Too many actions would not happen is the hearts were peacefull and content.

Knowing of Jesus is not walking with Him. Being in the light is.

This crazy drivel comes from a Chinese cult called "The Church of Almighty God" who believe that Almighty God is the returned Jesus in our days as a Chinese woman who was born in China!! This is merely the intro to this totally insane cult.
Sounds like Dalai Lama stuff.

What is finished is the perfected humanity of Jesus...given to they who are crucified with Him in the form of grace power to walk as Jesus walked. Now all that remains to do is for people to surrender their lives to be crucified with Christ so that HIS life is made manifest in these mortal bodies. :)

So our part is not yet finished....until we each are dead in Christ...and alive to holiness by His resurrection life.
