Ephesians 4:29 YLT
"Let no corrupt word out of your mouth go forth, but what is good unto the needful building up, that it may give grace to the hearers"

Giving grace to the hearers . . . the knowledge of God's good will towards us, and the power of God's sanctification.

We contribute . . . or we don't.

What is it about our words that give grace to those who hear us? What does that look like when it's happening?

Much love!

Hi Marks,
To me, it looks like kindness, even if we might disagree on certain issues. It is the total absence of arrogance, it is esteeming one another as higher than ourselves. I have found that nobody can disappoint and hurt you like another "Christian".
It's not a common thing so, we might miss it, lol. Lot's of miserable Christians out there, not to mention very combative and NOT at all graceful with their words. Not that I myself have never threw out a sarcastic reply or two but...it is not my habit nor desire to do that.
Coming from a family of 7 kids...we bickered and argued allot...my poor mom, lol - she was so overwhelmed at times, I do not know how she did it...she is with the Lord now, since summer of 1990...dad too but, think about it...it seems to drive parents crazy when their kids bicker and argue and fight among each other so...can we just imagine how God feels about it? I mean, we are His children! Sometimes the "ignore" option can bring peace on a forum like this, ha! I am a sensitive sort, probably too sensitive and, have been hurt to the point of tears on here...also have been brought to tears of joy on here too so...there ya have it!!!
In Him!

Out of the mouth comes blessings and cursing. Blessings build up. And it is possible to curse someone and that curse come to pass. That can destroy someone.

I was one of 4 siblings, no dad at home, and mentally ill mother. Lots of chaos!

Maybe words that impart grace bring peaceableness. I think we are responsible to each other. And I think we should have soft hearts. But yes we can be hurt. Those would not be words that impart grace.

Words that convince others that God Can. Words that convince that God will, that He has done it.

Much love!

Good reference! Blessings and cursing from the same set of lips, such should not be!

So is it fair to say we need to be intentioned towards words that bring grace, to make sure it's not otherwise?

Much love!

Of course. But many are not aware that we have the power to literally curse someone. I learned that the hard way, and had to actually go to the person's house and remove the curse and say blessings over her head. Immediately, the curse was nullified, and the blessing then came to pass. Wow, what a lesson!

Yes, I am still impacted by words my mother spoke to me as a child.

James 1
18 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:
20 For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.

For this reason, let every one be swift to hear and slow to speak, slow to get angry. For the reason that God made us new.

Much love!

(Love your topics, marks) Well, I did not remember Paul had said that. I personally would not have used the word grace.
Grace means something quite quite quite quite holy given directly from Above, from God, unwarranted,
usually unexpected, leaving you changed to your core---to me.

However, if I were to talk about what does it look like when we speak Truth to someone...I would say it looks like a
peaceful glow comes over the person...and depending on how troubled they were it looks like they just
won a small Lottery as they are hugging you....it looks like the phone ringing as a wife is thanking you for getting her
'old' husband back to her. :)

A very pleasant read of a thread. Each one has tried and contributed words of grace to the thread... Blessings to all for your relationship with Christ is on display and food for those that are hungry.

May He become more and we become less.

Blessings to all, Not me

Hi Miss Hepburn,

The word there is Charis, so I wouldn't know what else to use.

Your objection makes sense to me, if I understand what you are saying, though in my mind that just raises the bar way up high.

Grace to the hearers CANNOT come from me, it can only come from Him, but here is it to come through me.
It looks like I have a simple choice with each thing I say.

1 Peter 4:10-11 KJV
(10) As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
(11) If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

I can speak either as the logia of God, or with corrupt communication. Either from the grace given to me to speak words that impart grace to you, or to just speak from my flesh.

Good reason to be slow to speak, so we can be sure which it is.

Much love!

Imagine if we could all get a hold of this! That we have the opportunity with every word we speak to impart priceless treasure to everyone.

Even in the simple everyday stuff.

We have a great treasure in clay pots, power of God, to be shared.

Much love!

Ephesians is very important to me to know who I am, and what my life is.

Ephesians 4:6-7 KJV
(6) One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
(7) But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.

Ephesians 4:15-16 KJV
(15) But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
(16) From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

Ephesians 4:22-25 KJV
(22) That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
(23) And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
(24) And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
(25) Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.

Ephesians 4:29-30 KJV
(29) Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
(30) And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

Much love!

I think you hit the nail on the head here. If a person speaks out of self regardless of the words used they are not “words of grace”. If a person speaks out of the “Christ in them” they are “words of grace” regardless if they are pleasing to the hearer or not.

Anyways, that’s my cent and a half’s worth.

Be blessed as we pursue a deeper relationship with Christ, Not me

2 Corinthians 9:8 "And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work"

. . . sometimes through you to others, I think. As you encourage and counsel others, if your words are imparting grace to one who is serving God's will, and you add to equiping them to serve, you become partakers with them in the work, do you not?

Much love!
