And now that I've exhausted my limited proficiency in German, let us return to English...

Eben so mein Herr, daß ist, mein Bruder...

I was only slightly familiar with the old German script from school. Then about 5 years ago I bought an old Luther Bible to replace my badly worn German Bible. It was in the old script. I went to the Internet, found and copied a break down of the alphabet in that old script into modern German script. For a long time I had to have that break down at my side as I read slowly through the Luther Bible. I still have my little cheat sheet, but by now I do recognize those letters easily enough except when the print is too small. It is very easy for example to confuse the letter f with the letter s in the old German script. They are the same except for the little cross on the F. When the little are very small as in my Bible, if I don't recognize the word immediately without a magnifying glass I cannot tell the difference

I guess for your work as a worker in science such specialized knowledge of the technical word is required.

During my years working for the Social Security Administration I mostly translated certificates of birth, death, marriage and such. Once in a while more complex things came my way, but if they were too difficult, I rejected them since translations were not my primary work. I did it on a volunteer basis to help out for there were always lots of documents requiring translations.

There several other German translators available to handle the more difficult ones. I enjoyed the extra documents that came my way but I had neither the time nor incentive to get into anything where I would have to sit with my dictionary looking up words in order to get the gist of a document. We needed an accurate English translation so the adjudicators [my own primary job] could properly evaluate the evidence in connection with Social Security claims.

Blackletter was used throughout western Europe until about the 1600s, and continued in Germany into the 20th century. A lot of important chemical research was printed in Blackletter, since the Germans and Danes did much of the advanced work in chemistry in those days.

The script was the cursive version...

Lots of fun to take notes in this system; especially, if someone was looking over one's shoulder.

My Luther version German Bible was printed in 1922 and is, of course, NOT in cursive, but even its print can be hard to decipher. The lengthy documents in the old German cursive were the one I almost always bypassed leaving them for another translator. Even your neatly aligned and printed cursive would be difficult. Something hand written by a person in a hurry would be nigh onto impossible for me. Perhaps when I was younger and more patience and better eyes, but those days are gone.

When I did do such translations [short ones] sometimes I was able to do so with the help of context. An difficult word might be identified more easily by first translating the neighboring words in front of and after it.

See the first page of scripture in my Luther Bible. The tiny little notes at the beginning of a verse are sometimes impossible. When I forget one I may dig out my magnifying glass to check decipher each letter in a word.

I've already pointed out that this can't be the case, and proven

Hello shnarkle,

Hmmm .. Accept your 'proof' or the living 2000 year old witness of the apotolic churches....

You too are welcome to come to the wedding feast of the Lamb of God!

Peace be with you!
