How can you compare CSLewis , The Narnia series , with Harry Potter - that's just weird, the Narnia books actually encourage discussions on christianity, especially The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe - even my atheist son knows that Aslan is Jesus, the witch represents satan and the stone table was the cross.
What about Tolkien and The Lord of the rings - I like that as well.
I am not saying you should not be mindful of what you read and watch, but not everything is a bad influence - many things open discussions and debates and actually enable you to talk about the gospel. If you fear everything, then that controls - it's like seeing demons everywhere -i guess it's like @Willie T was saying about Halloween ( just curious about your views on books and films )
I guess I have always had these things in my life because I am a lone christian, married to a non christian for so long, and then living with an atheist- so much goes over my head.
What about Star wars ?
Curious

Thank You Butterfly, it is good to be mindful that we are not to live in fear. However, falling into a naive mindset for things like Harry Potter would be just as bad. I am reminding myself to live in conviction not fear.
As for Starwars, I used to watch the first two trilogies but I've noticed it getting darker with the first new one and I don't think it's for me. Just personal preference, maybe personal conviction. I've noticed movies getting darker and darker and as a result I've watched less and less movies.

Oh don't get me wrong , I understand the concerns that Harry Potter brought about, I remember all the debates at church when the books came out. My concern with the discussion here is that other things were deemed wrong ( like CS Lewis )
I loved the original Star Wars films, I wasn't a Christian back then - but after I became a Christian I use to align it with the spiritual battle, so pulled positives everytime I watch it. I haven been as keen on the newer ones, but do go along as it's become a ' mother / son ' thing with my middle son - so we will go along just before Christmas and see the new one - but also with the old characters being in its nostalgia for me as well.
I understand the influence of films over your life , when I was sixteen I went along to see the exorcist - Christians were outside warning us not to watch it. I watch it three times, what a mistake. It did open my mind up to fear - but it also intrigued me to want to watch more of those kind of movies - so I did.
I developed a fear of Satan, but it was a warped fear. I believed he was so much more powerful than God. However that fear eventually led me to faith, in my early 20's. Someone must have been praying for me because I was led to a church playgroup for my son, that led me to joining an out reach discussion group , which eventually led me to seeking out the Lord. I came to faith six months later.
That film still had a hold on me though, I wouldn't allow it in my house- but then one day I thought, no more , let's face this fear head on - so I watched the film again, prayed before hand, and I found that my new knowledge of Satan through scripture - totally outweighed the Satan I had imagined in the film.
I have had many discussion with my children, my daughter and youngest son have many debates - he is an athiest, she is not sure , more open and I am a Christian - so it makes for a good mix!
One thing we wondered is if you over protect your children, never let them watch or see anything you consider wrong, when they become adults / teenagers they don't always know how to handle ' the world ' that is thrust upon them........ that can equally lead to problems.

Joanna Rowling herself has said she was significantly influenced by C S Lewis.

But surely you have to weigh the books up on an I individual level- have you read the narnia books, have you seen Harry Potter?

What is the point to that statement? It would be a fallacy to assume that if C S Lewis is good, and her work was inspired by it, then that would equal her work to be good.

Also, I started another thread on Fundamentalism and I still see nothing wrong with it. Maybe you could clue me in?

I like Tolkien and Lewis, but could never get into Rowling's works. I found her books unreadable. So I am not really a judge as to whether the book are any good or not. What I have seen of the films I have found distasteful because of the moral values in them. They are not a value set I share.

Raecently I read a letter in the TV Plus where a reader spoke up against Harry Potter. As a Christian I wish to state that the Bible clearly tells usto have nothing to do with witchcraft. When I was 14 years old I had the most terrible experience. For a long time I heard voices that repeated over and over:'Harry must go'. As a Christian I would like to warn people who are crazy about Harry Potter. Rather stay away before you also have to experience the trauma that I did.I am praying for the salvation of everyone involved with Harry Potter some way or another. I've also sent e-mails to some of them to tell them that God loves them and that I will keep on praying for their salvation.

Harry Potter is just a blatant example of celebrating the occult. There are numerous not so obvious examples that most people would never think of anything wrong or dangerous, e.g. Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, Casper the Friendly Ghost, too many Walt Disney movies to list, etc. Magic is big business at the box office, and they tend to mix in other demented themes as well. For example, the movie Big with Tom Hanks which depicts a little boy who is magically transformed into a full grown man who then finds himself being targeted by the sexual advances of a woman at the company he works for. What is the message here? This is a woman who is attracted to a man who is really still just a child.

Thats a scary statement..................... J.K Rowling made a statement that she wanted her books to introduce Children to witchcraft. While MickinEngland may not find that to be a horrible Idea. I for one do not like her intentions. Books are just books. If you read something that has magic in it, then it does not mean your a practicing witch. Don't put yourself in bondage by making a big deal over fiction. I would not support anyone that wants children to get into Witch Craft. I would also guard your heart for out of it come the issues of Life. This includes lots of TV programs and Horror movies. God is not trying to take away our fun. He does not want us to sow things in our minds that will hinder our faith and cause mental issues latter. Even soap operas have cause Women to leave there husbands because the Hubby is not lining up with the smooth talking perfect husband in those shows. So, don't be deceived. Satan can use anything if your not on guard, not just books by Rowling.

Good points. Even the bible depicts witches summoning spirits

It doesn't take away the fact that there are absurdities in the Bible in black and white. Why should Leviticus 20 be considered relevant today? What possible justification is there for putting someone to death because they dabbled in sorcery or somebody who fell in love with another man or woman. The Bible is a Holy Book, the only one of its kind, but there are a handful of things in it that aren't so Holy.

This doesn't take into consideration that God couldn't care less what homosexuals do OUTSIDE his covenant. Those laws are for his chosen people, and no one else. So it's clearly relavent to God's people throughout eternity, and clearly irrelevant to everyone else throughout eternity. Nothing in the bible is absurd to those who are born again.

“The chilling adventures of Sabrina” makes Harry Potter look tame. I think it is truly the first mainstream, no conspiracy-necessary, nakedly Satanic show - it is a Netflix Original. I think it needs to be watched out for and restricted from kids.
