People tend to focus on the spiritual problem with this holiday, but fail to note that getting kids jacked up on sugar is priming them for a life of addiction and health issues. In the last ten years, I've had a total of less than half a dozen kids come to my door dressed up looking for a hand out on Halloween. I always give them money because it's extortion, plain and simple, and I can't have sugar in my home. Not because I could be tempted to eat it, but because it literally give me a headache just to be anywhere near the stuff. I have to give the bakery a wide berth just to avoid a hangover. The amount of sugar people consume now is over a hundred pounds a year on average. Fifty years ago it was less than 3 pounds a year.
To me, Halloween is a metaphor for Identity politics today. These identities that are being thrown around complete with their own pronouns, etc. are as legitimate as the little ballerinas and cowboys who come knocking on my door asking me to humor them with some pointless transitory reward.
We put a sign on the door that we don't participate. I used to give candy out but after this discussion I didn't want to help to promote it. I commend you for being able to avoid sugar. I held to a very strict diet for years - and avoided sugar. I get bouts of craving sweets though. I've been on a sweet kick lately that I have to stop; sugar really is addictive. I spoke with a doctor about craving sweets and he said: "You crave them because you eat them." I've found that when I give in to the small nudging to buy glazed donuts, after I eat them I crave sweets even more. It's only a moment of satisfaction though because afterwards I always feel wrong - knowing that I'm eating unhealthy.
