Hebrews 4:12,

12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

How does the sword work in a believers life? The word of God is for the believers to be able to separate their doing and his being. The sword of God or word of God is the only thing that can separate soul and spirit, according to the word of God. Why must soul and spirit be divided? very obvious without the dividing of soul and spirit it is impossible to separate my doing and his doing. His doing is a completed finished product, my doing is an on going process of growth. So you see one is soulish (spiritual growth), and the other is spirit completeness or completed in spirit by Christ in you.

I have labored long and hard over the fact we will recieve doer religion over spiritual completeness any day. I cannot figure out what motivated me to be so slow and stubborn to accept my completeness in Christ. But I did, I did not come skipping and jumping up and down for joy saying I'm complete I'm complete, it was quite the opposite. We like to do, we like to feel like we have a hand in all this. We will have a hard time admiting it but we like doing to be, instead of accepting the fact "I am all I will ever be right now in Christ," you may grow some in expression of who you are but that is soulish. But in time the patience of our Lord always prevails.

Some may feel a dress code or some other rule to live by brings them a form of godliness. All of Christianity through the years has had its movements, most were of the Lord until man figures out a way to get involved. That is just the way it is, man is weak, meaning fallible, but the plan and purpose of God has never ceased to be operating in an individuals life. If man could help himself there would have been no need for a cross.

To see what he has done, and to see what he is doing through me can only come by dividing. The believer properly trained to divide soul and spirit by the sword of God, brings the knowledge to grow up in him.

The Word of God is searching; and Hebrews 4.12 is indeed such a searching verse...

"I am all I will ever be right now in Christ,"
Amazing...a recipe for a permanent babe in Christ state. And such a twisted logic. That's what happens when people try advancing in Christ with the human mind and it's futile reasoning.

The maturing process begins when we are purified through His life being experienced until Christ be formed in us.

Maybe you were slow to accept it because of Romans 2:16, which says it is doers, not just hearers of the law, who are justified.

We are not spirit...we are a soul. God's Spirit affects the soul like chalk in dye. Over time we may become dyed in the wool. But a rock doesn't allow for infiltration of that kind. It depends on the heart.

The sword of God...it is all through His word concerning the sword. Genesis 3:24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life. (and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart)
^John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

May not seem like it but “the terror of the Lord” connects to the flaming sword. 2 Corinthians 5:11 Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.

What is “the terror of the Lord”?

There does need to be conviction in the light of coming judgment; we need to make sure we are resting and depending entirely on the work of Christ at the Cross for sinners.

And is that the same sword, the Word of God, which we read about back in Genesis?

"So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life." Gen 3:24

Why are we kept away the Tree of Life?

"And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:" Gen 3:22

"He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God." Rev 2:7

Jesus did NOT overcome our world. He overcame his own world and as the above verse says it, we need to overcome ours. He has made available the means to do it, and he will help when we ask of Him... but WE must do the overcoming in order to enter in and eat of that Tree of Life so long closed to men. We don't just walk in and take a bite. We must first be properly prepared [Matt 22:11-12, Eph 6:13ff]. God and His Son provide all that we will need, but We need to DO it ourselves. Jesus worked, His Father worked [John 5:17] and we must work while it is day, for soon night is coming... [John 9:4]

Very often translated as "fear of the Lord" consider the following verses on how to get the answer to your question:

"Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding;.
If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;

Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God." Prov 2:3-5

This verse doesn't say the Word is a sword: it says it's sharper than one. However, Eph 6:17 does say the word is a sword. Kind of like the "in" and "of" thing you pointed out in another thread.

A sword cannot separate us from the love of God (Romans 8) but God's ministers don't bear the sword in vain, and he uses it against those who do evil (Romans 13).

Don't know where you want to go with those verses, but I thought I would bring them up for conversation's sake.

searchest for her as for hid treasures;

Really has nothing to do with the thread(maybe the sword), but been asking Him the past couple of days about Psalm 17:14 From men which are thy hand, O Lord, from men of the world, which have their portion in this life, and whose belly thou fillest with thy hid treasure : they are full of children, and leave the rest of their substance to their babes.

And why the: “thou fillest with thy hid treasure”... not as in why because they don’t deserve it but why there?
Thank you for your post which brought up Isaiah 45:3 And I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places, that thou mayest know that I, the Lord, which call thee by thy name, am the God of Israel.

treasures in darkness..hidden riches of secret places...1 Corinthians 14:23-25 If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad? [24] But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all: [25] And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.

Romans 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

True, but to be able to divide soul and spirit the word of God that is sharper than any two edged sword has to be used. The line between soul and spirit so finite so to say! there must be a precision cut. Only the word of God, the sword of God, can make the division. We cannot properly interpret scripture without dividing. Hence alot of the conversations and disagreements that go on in Christianity. Rightfully dividing the word of truth to my knowledge is not being taught as it was at one time. Without it, you can end up anywhere in your understanding. For example; churches start over one verse from Isaiah or Jeremiah, or someone has a feeling for another verse or passage and away they go. No divsion just a feeling of "God told me too." Point being; we are the salt of the earth, the light, we need to act like it and stop being the laughing stock of the world. The world will always mock but it wouldn't hurt if we didn't bark like dogs and carry on like no body is watching. Divide and grow up in him, it really isn't to tough to read and see what we should be doing as a body. Thanks for your comment

It seems to me I ran across or even addressed this recently somewhere, but my only discovery in my search was that I had read it in my morning reading about 2 months ago and highlighted part of the two verses, 14-15 of Psalm 17 "the wicked, which is thy sword" and "from men which are thy hand". I cannot find what I wrote otherwise, but what I understand is that the "wicked" and the "men" spoken of here those working as the left hand of God as opposed to the right.

In a sense every person is available to work either with God [right hand] or for God [left hand]. To be working on the right hand as one of the 'with Him' people is where should want always to be.

We should strive never to work as one of the 'for Him' people. Even saved people not walking right for moments in time can and are used by the left hand of God. Making of habit of this...well...is not a good thing! The left hand work of God would make us instrumental in accomplishing curses described in scripture when someone's actions or inactions have caused to be invoked. Jesus may help you to understand this with the entirety of this parable:

"And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left." Matt 25:33

"Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
For I was an hungered, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:
I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.
Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungered, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?
Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me."
Matt 25:41-45

"A wise man's heart is at his right hand; but a fool's heart at his left." Ecc 10:2

And why the: “thou fillest with thy hid treasure”... not as in why because they don’t deserve it but why there?

no question but meant it more as a thank you for posting a verse which helped. Considering Isaiah 45:3 “I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and the hidden riches in secret places” realize this is speaking of giving those treasures of darkness, and the hidden riches in secret places to Christ. God the revealer of all secret things which knows the hidden things of the heart. It just stood out in relation to when the body comes together and one comes in the secrets of the heart are made manifest. Isn’t that the treasure hidden in darkness brought out into the Light of Christ? Very hopeful in nothing is hidden that will not be uncovered. 1 Corinthians 4:5
Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.

“I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and the hidden riches in secret places”
