"Candles were used; and hearth fires shone as brightly as on a moonless evening in autumn. . . . "Dr. Nathanael Whittaker, pastor of the Tabernacle church in Salem, held religious services in the meeting-house, and preached a sermon in which he maintained that the darkness was supernatural. Congregations came together in many other places. The texts for the extemporaneous sermons were invariably those that seemed to indicate that the darkness was consonant with Scriptural prophecy. . . . Though at nine o'clock that night the moon rose to the full, "it had not the least effect to dispel the deathlike shadows." After midnight the darkness disappeared, and the moon, when first visible, had the appearance of blood.

May 19, 1780, stands in history as "The Dark Day." Since the time of Moses no period of darkness of equal density, extent, and duration, has ever been recorded. The description of this event, as given by eyewitnesses, is but an echo of the words of the Lord, recorded by the prophet Joel, twenty-five hundred years previous to their fulfillment: "The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord come." Christ had bidden His people watch for the signs of His advent and rejoice as they should behold the tokens of their coming King. "When these things begin to come to pass," He said, "then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh." He pointed His followers to the budding trees of spring, and said: "When they now shoot forth, ye see and know of your own selves that summer is now nigh at hand. Other Authors Weigh In

The great astronomer Hershel states: “The dark day of North America was one of those wonderful phenomena of nature which will always be read with interest, but which philosophy is at a loss to explain.”

Samuel Williams who did extensive scientific research of the dark day had this to say:

“The time of this extraordinary darkness was May 19, 1780. It came on between the hours of ten and eleven A. M., and continued until the middle of the next night, but with different appearances at different places. . .

The degree to which the darkness arose was different in different places. In most parts of the country it was so great that people were unable to read common print, determine the time of day by their clocks or watches, dine, or manage their domestic business, without the light of candles. In some places the darkness was so great that persons could not see to read common print in the open air, for several hours together; but I believe this was not generally the case.

The extent of this darkness was very remarkable. Our intelligence in this respect is not so particular as I could wish; but from the accounts that have been received, it seems to have extended all over the New England States. It was observed as far east as Falmouth [Portland, Maine]. To the westward we hear of its reaching to the furthest parts of Connecticut, and Albany. To the southward it was observed all along the seacoasts, and to the north as far as our settlements extend. It is probable it extended much beyond these limits in some directions, but the exact boundaries cannot be ascertained by any observations that I have been able to collect.

With regard to its duration, it continued in this place at least fourteen hours; but it is probable this was not exactly the same in different parts of the country.

The appearance and effects were such as tended to make the prospect extremely dull and gloomy. "That the darkness was not caused by an eclipse is manifest by the various positions of our system at that time; for the moon was more than one hundred fifty degrees from the sun all that day." Dr. Samuel Stearns, who had been appealed to because of his knowledge in "philosophy and astronomy", in a letter printed in the Independent Chronicle, June 22, 1780.

Dr. Stearns continues in good King James English:

"The primary cause must be imputed to Him that walketh through the circuit of heaven, who stretcheth out the heaven like a curtain, who maketh the clouds his chariot, who walketh upon the wings of the wind. It was He, at whose voice the stormy winds are obedient, that commanded these exhalations to be collected and condensed together, that with them He might darken both the day and the night; which darkness was, perhaps, not only a token of His indignation against the crying iniquities and abominations of the people, but an omen of some future destruction." Dr. Samuel Stearns, who had been appealed to because of his knowledge in "philosophy and astronomy", in a letter printed in the Independent Chronicle, June 22, 1780

"The legislature of Connecticut was then in session in Hartford. A very general opinion prevailed that the Day of Judgment was at hand. The House of Representatives, being unable to transact their business, adjourned. A proposal to adjourn the council [a second legislative body called the Governor's Council] was under consideration. When the opinion of Colonel Davenport was asked, he answered, `I am against an adjournment. The day of judgment is either approaching or it is not. If it is not, there is no cause for an adjournment; if it is, I choose to be found doing my duty. I wish therefore that candles may be brought.'" Timothy Dwight of Yale College, contemporary, wrote this account according to John W. Barber, Connecticut Historical Collections, p. 403

"The Dark Day, May 19, 1780 - so called on account of a remarkable darkness on that day extending over all New England ... The true cause of this phenomenon is not known. ... The dark day in Northern America was one of those wonderful phenomena of nature which will always be read of with interest, but which philosophy is at a loss to explain." It is simply amazing, to see the same willing blindness upon those of today, as those in Christ's day. They had the prophecies fulfilling before their very eyes, and they refused the very sign given unto them. Just as it was in Jesus day, the corrupt Jewish leaders (not all), did not accept their Messiah, thinking that the prophecies were to be fulfilled in another way, and so they still to this day, reject the true fulfillment, and so likewise, after the tribulation of the dark ages, as foretold (Matthew 24:29; see also Daniel), at the very time specified came the Great Earthquake (Nov. 1, 1755), followed by the Great Dark Day (even called this in History!; May 19, 1780), followed by the falling of the stars in unprecedented numbers (Nov. 13, 1833), which just so happens to take place just before the anti-typical Feast of Trumpets in 1834, by the Great Awakening, 10 days/years before 1844, and the ending of the 2,300 day/years (from 457 BC fall; Ezra 6:14, and chapter 7) of Daniel 8:13-14,26; Revelation 9:13-15, etc, all of which coincide with the 3 1/2 day/years of 1793 to 1797/8 in Revelation 11:9,11 in the French revolution/reign of terror, and from 1793 + 40 years (as Christ stayed 40 days) brings to 1833, plus 10 day/years (as 10 more days the disciples stayed in Jerusalem) to 1844 - a 50th year Jubilee.


All the events and signs in their proper order, after and before the other events so specified, and they are known in the world, and even bear the distinctive names such as "the Great Dark Day", of which no other in the history from the time of Jesus, even until now has occurred, nor been so called. The events and timing even match to the timing and deadly wound of the Beast from the Sea (Revelation 13:3), in 1798 (Napoleon (France), Alexander Berthier and Papal Rome), and to the timing and rise of the beast from the earth (Revelation 13:11), which was to become the United States of America.

Just as the Pharisees of old, they will say these can't be the signs, and attribute them to some other phenomena. They try to attribute the earthquake, the darkness, etc to natural phenomena and turn their minds away from what the word of God said would happen in their perfect timing and event.

They do not recognize the types and their anti-types, just as the tower fell (Luke 13:4) just before the days that there were two wicked highpriests (an officiating and a retired), just as we now have in the 9-11, and the Joseph Ratzinger and Jorge Bergoglio. So many other things taking place, they cannot see that soon, "the decree" will go forth (Esther 3:15; Daniel 3:10; Luke 2:1). They will be at a total loss to know what is coming and be totally unprepared for it (Proverbs 22:3, 27:12), having rejected all the road "signs" along the way.
