Wonderful smells of food cooking. And always a pack of cards on the side...waiting...

Good but neither of my grandmothers ever had one of those. My mother washed our clothes by hand in large metal containers until lo and behold my step-dad bought her a ringer washing machine as in the picture. Even then all of the drying was done on an outdoor clothesline.

Again I guess I date myself. None of my grandparents ever had a lawn that they mowed. The one in the picture is the only kind of lawnmower we ever had. The mowing job belong to me and my brother. No allowance received ... but if we did a good job, lol, we were allowed to eat dinner.

Grandma didn't drive.
Aye, my grandmother who died in 2003 at 100 years old had never had a license nor driven a motor vehicle. I think she gave thanks to God when she got her first telephone. She loved to talk with anybody about anything and the telephone made it an easier way to get in touch with anyone.

An indoor toilet. We were still using the one at the bottom of our yard.
My grandmother's toilet was not indoors and sat about 100 yards behind the house. They lived on well water which was heated on the kitchen stove to warm up the bath water. All of the grandkids used take turns using the bath water in a large laundry tub on the kitchen floor.

Oh...okay. I seem to recall the adults instead used bread and the kids used their finger...lol
My step-father who grew up on the Azores Islands in the Atlantic Ocean always used a knife to eat his meat. He used the fork only to hold the meat while he cut it. He them used the knife to transport a small piece to his mouth. When there was bread [most often the case] he would use it to sop up the gravy or juices from the meat.

Going to Grandma's house was always a treat! She lived far from us and it was always a big deal to go when I was a child.

1. Toys! Old fashioned ones I loved playing with. They were in the hallway closet.
2. A basement filled with oddities and mystery! Not really... But to a 6 or 7 year old...
3. There was a hard boiled egg holder in the shape of a chicken. I actually liked soft boiled eggs... But I always looked forward to using it.
4. The coolest looking desk! It was an old fashioned one that had the lid that pulled down to shut it off.
5. Antique vases, urns and China. I now have some of it. Think it dates back to the early 1900's.
6. Manhattans. Well, hey... She was Irish!
7. A folding cot to sleep on. It was rickety and probably uncomfortable... But it was MINE! Not really... But I thought so. I thought it was the greatest.
8. Grandma and Grandpa... Always kind and loving until I became a teenager and got too big for my britches, then they scolded me. Not by affectionately telling me I was Dutch, either. But yes, I needed it.

When I was little, one of my Grandma's had an outhouse. And I also remember water being heated on the stove, and a tub in the middle of the kitchen floor and taking turns for a bath...Gross, I was the youngest and last...AND only the first kid got shampoo from a jar...all the others got the leftover bath water AND shampoo....LOL

Willie ~ amadeus...braggin y'all had clothes your mama washed for you and food for supper....LOL (just messing with you guys).

We were so poor, I thought everyone else I knew was rich!
Having supper at Grandma's house was always a highlight. And Real Butter Grandma would let us slather it on bread as thick as frosting. ;)

Glory to God,
