I have recently been trying to 'fit in' with a local ultra charismatic church.
The worship singing is all very 'foreign' and embarrassing to my conservative introverted nature.
A lady next to me was muttering and whining and flung out her arms in 'worship' with such enthusiasm that she nearly dislodged my glasses. Elsewhere members were gesticulating, speaking in tongues, and making other noises, with complete disregard to one another. And all the time the worship team were repeating what they were singing as if such repetition were an essential part of arousing the Holy Spirit to his 'uplifting' duties.
I must keep persevering to see if I can eventually adjust to what otherwise seems to be a nice group of Believers.
Mike... Yes, I find it embarrassing as well. I've concluded that God has people in these fellowships but the practices they engage in does not draw me. For me God is a God of order without display. I have never felt at peace in those surroundings.

Not only could I feel his presence, but I could also see it. it was like a big sheet floating down from heaven and falling on the people as they sang. it was awesome.
satan appears as an angel of light eh
For the life of me, I cannot understand why people settle for anything less.
bc emotional appeals work great on Eve, but not so much on Adam, wadr
you might contemplate the post above this one, and understand that i dont mean to denigrate emotions per se ok

Your sarcasm is duly noted.

In my church travels over the decades I have noticed a disturbing pattern: when modern praise choruses are sung, most of the congregation just listen as if to be entertained. Then when an old hymn like "The Old Rugged Cross" is sung as a change of pace, the sound is almost comically deafening! Feedback I have received reveals at least 2 reasons for this:
(1) Whatever their musical preferences, congregations, especially their senior members, find it easier to worship to traditional hymns.
(2) Most seniors secretly despise the replacement of old hymns with modern praise choruses, but they don't want to make waves because they want to attract youth. So their rousing participation in singing old hymns is a kind of polite protest vote!

that emo feeling that we label Holy Spirit? Didnt begin to feel counterfeit to me for a long time, was somewhat surprised when i found others who felt the same way. Might be a reaction to other hypocrisy even...doubt it, tho.
Satan appears as an angel of light apparently nonetheless

I love the old hymns and I also love some of the more modern choruses but a lot of what passes for praise and worship today to me is unsingable unless you're a musician or young enough to listen to the so-called music of today. The old hymns and a lot of the older choruses have that sing-along factor that is missing in modern music both spiritual and secular. And to me if I can't sing it I don't or I sing along in tongues.

Sadly, there are few alternatives in my 'neck of the UK woods'.

Yes, there are a few on here in the same boat, @amadeus , for instance. I know he craves real fellowship and I pray that for him. We truly need one another and, I am so glad to have this forum for fellowship, or I would have next to none at all! I do love my Church but, connecting with others is difficult for me. I will pray that God opens a door for you @Mike Waters .
Gods blessings!

I feel the same in that I crave real fellowship and even when I was going to my church there was nothing apart from Sundays and small midweek groups where I did feel more connected to my fellow group members but never saw any of them outside of those meetings. And after they stopped the midweek groups it just wasn't the same as felt so disconnected then. I went to church to the funeral of one of the old group members yesterday but didn't feel that I meant anything to most of them. One guy who was part of my previous church and whom I've known ever since I became a Christian 42 years ago once said that he didn't consider Ray and I his friends and yesterday didn't speak to either of us although his wife hugged me and gave me a card for Ray's birthday.

I don't want to blame anybody though as I know I'm not much good at forging relationships and never have been so I have no friends. Just saying how I feel disconnected.

I suggest visiting a pub first. If there's no pub around, have a pint or two of something before going to church. Now I'm not advising getting intoxicated, but a little something might make you fit right in.

I know of a church who hold praise meetings in pubs.

We are a mirror image here Pat. My small group is just for an hour and a half bi-weekly and nothing outside of it. Same in the Church I attend :( But, we have each other on here and I never felt more connected than on this site. Praise God!

Ahahaha! Not sure that would go over very well! I have lost my balance because of injuries and sometimes look like I have been drinking (because I'm too proud to use a cane  ) The matriarch at the Church I was attending at that time pulled me aside and said, and not so kindly, "have you been drinking"? I was so taken aback and embarrassed, so I tried to give her the short story of my nerve damage in my lower legs and loss of all metatarsal padding on my right foot...I don't think she believed me! She pretty much ignored me from then on. So glad I left that place!

Me too Nancy. I come on here for fellowship with other born again Christians and to connect not to discuss, argue or speculate. The ignore button is a very useful tool.

And I much admire those who make that the parameters of their fellowship.
For my part I feel that my 'gift and calling' is to discuss the very deepest points of theology (albeit with great deference to the 'darkened glass'......my aversion being towards those who do so with a bigoted dogma that belies the very existence of the 'darkened glass').
God grant that all types of forum uses can blend together to best reflect the diversity of the 'Body of Christ'.
