There is a very real hell that people go to for everlasting punishment (Matthew 13:41-42, Matthew 13:49-50, Matthew 25:41, Matthew 25:46).
I agree with the punishment, but calling it everlasting punishment isn't completely accurate. The Greek
word is aion and it simply means an age. So what Jesus was actually telling them was the evil lawless ones
would be cast outside of the Kingdom of God and they would be angry (gnashing their teeth) because they
couldn't enter in the Kingdom, because they refused to believe in the Son of God during their lifetime. So
God would put them in outer darkness (meaning outside the Kingdom) where they would be unable to enjoy
the blessings of the Kingdom for that Age. In Luke 13:26-28, Jesus says,
26 Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in Your presence, and
You taught in our streets’; 27 and He will say, ‘I tell you, I do not know
where you are from; depart from Me, all you evildoers.’ 28 There will be
weeping and gnashing of teeth there when you see Abraham and Isaac
and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but yourselves
being cast out.”
In essence, there will be believers and unbelievers that will be outside of the Kingdom mad about their
situation, because they refused their judgement in the house of God. Now they will have to go the long
way around to get to the Promised Land, just like Israel did in their wilderness journey.
Depending on their situation, most will take the long way, but all will eventually make it into the Kingdom.
In their outer darkness experience, they will eventually learn the nature and character of Jesus Christ, which
is, LOVE!!!
God will give them another chance, because of His character and His nature, but they will still have to learn
through their trials and tribulations, that will release them from the fiery furnace, that God has established for
their purification.
Why do we want to serve God now? So we can be used of God in the ages to come to bring about the restoration
of ALL THINGS, spoken of by the prophets since the world began (Acts 3:21).
What a God! What a Plan!
