SCHOOLS OUT FOREVER by Mick People wonder why the Old Testament was so harsh. The answer is that God has never changed, but the way he had to package himself to get his message across HAS changed, he had to talk in harsh primitive OT terms to earlier harsh primitive peoples in their own "language" like a strict headteacher to get their attention."The law brought us to Christ like a schoolmaster,but now through Christ we are not under that schoolmaster" (Gal 3:24-25) (Likewise, when Ryker in Star Trek joined Klingon vessel Pagh on an exchange visit as 1st Officer he had to punch and throw stroppy Klingon 2nd Officer Klag across the bridge to get the attention and respect of him and the rest of the crew ) Then when God felt the time was right to package himself in a softer way to more advanced peoples, he gave us Jesus who came not to abolish the OT wholesale, but to show us how to apply its rules with enlightened goodnatured commonsense.Jesus said - "It was said 'eye for eye,tooth for tooth' but I say turn the other cheek" (Matt 5:38-39)And people quickly realised - "The covenant of Jesus is superior to the old one" (Heb 8:6-7) Remember, Jesus saves, not the OT ;)Right Klag? "Grrrrr..."

Gods law in itself is perfect, Psalms 19:7, and it states in Matthew 5:17 that jesus did not come to change it. these other scriptures should help as well: Galations 3:19, Psalms 19:7-9, Psalms 119:1-8, Exodus 13:9.

Im not going to get to in depth here mick, the old testament scpriptures are as follows. Exodus 21:23-25, Leviticus 24:17-22, Deuternomy 19:19-21. And as for Matthew 5:38-39 my interpritation of that is to ignore people up to a certain point but most certainly as christians we should not be a welcome mat to be ran over by people.

Let us see what Scripture actually says on that matter, shall we?
Colossians 2:13-14And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
The only thing blotted out by Christ's sacrifice (context of Colossians 2) are the ordinances. Now we have several places in the Bible which clearly testify to their being differences between things like commandments and ordinances:
II Kings 17:34Unto this day they do after the former manners: they fear not the LORD, neither do they after their statutes, or after their ordinances, or after the law and commandment which the LORD commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named Israel;
II Chronicles 33:8Neither will I any more remove the foot of Israel from out of the land which I have appointed for your fathers; so that they will take heed to do all that I have commanded them, according to the whole law and the statutes and the ordinances by the hand of Moses.
Rather clearly here, the Bible distinguishes between them. This is in perfect alignment with Christ expounding on the commandments in Matthew 5; for if he did away with them, then why is the adulterer who even thinks about the act just as bad as the one whom actually carries it through?The fact of the matter is that the Commandments, distinct from the ordinances nailed to the cross are still here. What Christian would not follow Thou shalt not steal, kill, et al?

MickFor someone who thinks heaven is a place where you (Mick) could be nursed over by an imaginary girl on StarTrek I fail to see what you could ever teach someone like me.Some people , even some Christians have an obsession or two. Yours is StarTrek with the imaginary nurse hovering over your bedside. Why are you on this forum? What is it you would like to teach? Please keep your private obsessions in your bedroom.Many thanks and Best regardsMartin W.

Dear friendsFor those who do not understand my post #8 , I do not blame you. However MickInEngland will certainly understand it. That is my purpose.Help comes in many forms. Sometimes it cuts deep. Jesus heals cuts to the bone if we ask. To ask is our function. To answer is Jesus' function. Sometimes it even works.

Between you and me mate, I'm also fond of Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, I fantasise about staggering semi-delirious into her surgery with a rattler bite to my calf, and she has to suck out the venom, then sit up with me all night dabbing my forehead with a damp cloth until the fever breaks..;)

I'm not about to argue with Gods laws but being old and seniel as I am it confuses me when I read in the old testament that adulteresses and adulterers [excause the spelling] are to be put to death and Jesus forgave the woman caught in adultry (I often wonder why the man wasn't accused as well) how that cannot be considered a case of not changing the law. I can understand it as a case of Grace on Jesus part, but not a case of fulfilling the law.

An how vick was so bitter over the year and a half the man spent it jail. Vick is a sick evil man and he should have served at least 20 years for that violent act. Thats just one example of mans law being so soft and so weak. Well im sorry but if people havnt repented of all there sins and if people still leave sins on the table there going to answer to god for it and there going to be blotted out at the end of time.

I'm with you on that one, I will admit I am not a big dog lover due mainly to the fact that the average dog owner no longer controls his pet and lets him/her run the neighborhood messing up yards and barking half the nightat some squirrel he chased up a tree, I know that dog is only doing what comes naturally to all dogs and I would never treat any animal mean but it would be nice to be able to sleep with your windows open instead of relying on air conditioning, but all that aside Michael Vick should still be in jail and I believe he would be if there wasn't so much money involved, thats the bottom line today.Now I'll go out and see if I can find a barkless constipated dog to pet...Ray
