Did you know that there was once an Irishman who wanted to become a tap dancer ( you know, those fancy line dance folk) who emigrated to New York way back last century? He was motivated by all the posters in the walls of buildings and bill boards as he walked down the streets of New York looking for as place to stay. Especially those in the entertainment district around Broadway in central Manhatten. Fascinated by the dancers he saw, and the obvious popularity of their trade, he was determined to make it big. Having had some experience back home in the local pubs with line dancing, the transition to the type of tap dancing in Vaudeville that seemed so popular seemed to him a cinch. So he practiced. And he practiced. Every day. He found a place to stay, and his dreams of becoming famous spread around the neighborhood. He's immediate neighbors in the flat next door could hear him every night. They didn't mind. He was a likeable fellow, popular with the other tenants, always thoughtful and a sense of humor. A nice fella. So they let him be. And they wished him well.
Months went by. Practice, practice, practice. Before work. After work. Tap, tap, then stop. Tap tap tap, then stop. Morning and night. Then one day, nothing. No tapping. They hear him go to work, come home from work, but no tapping. Does he not need any more practice they thought? Is he good enough now to be a professional dancer they were asking one another. Then one day one of the neighbors meet him in the stair well. Hello Paddy! How are you,?
I am well thank you.
It is good to see you. How is work,?
Fine thank you.
And how is your dancing going? We have not heard you this past week!
Ahhh, not so good.
Ohh, why is that Paddy? Tap dancing seemed to be your passion young fella. We could always hear you practicing. The music, the tapping, but lately, we thought maybe you had found a job dancing.
No, no job. I had to give up tap dancing unfortunately...I just don't think I will ever get the hang of it.
What Paddy,? You've given up? Why?
I kept falling in the sink.
