Mark 9:25-26 When Jesus saw that the people came running together, He rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, "Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him." And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, "He is dead." 9:28-29 And when He was come into the house, His disciples asked Him privately, "Why could not we cast him out?" And He said unto them, "This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting." Mark 6:7 And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits; This foul, demonic, spirit is also termed..."dumb and deaf." The spirit heard for it "came out." The spirit made sounds as it "cried." So, what does this "dumb and deaf" reference mean? This had to be a particularly nasty, different "kind" of spirit than others. The disciples were unable to cast him out yet they were given power over "unclean spirits" so this "kind" was demonic. Perhaps what is meant by "prayer and fasting" is that only our Father can cast him out. Your thoughts?

I believe that God can do anything and yes he alone can cast out demons. For we cannot do anything with out Him who saves us, for we have no power of our own....But through Him anything is possible ....love Jane

Hello Jane and welcome to the forum, My question in this thread was because Jesus gave His disciples power to cast out unclean spirits but they couldn't do so with this one. In reading corresponding gospels we see that the father of the boy termed him a "lunatic" (under the influence of the moon....Satan) and Jesus plainly named the spirit..."the devil." [Matthew 17:15-21, Luke 9:38-42] Our example for dealing with the devil is given us through Michael.... Jude 1:9 Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee. My main question in this thread has been answered. Concerning why it was called a deaf and dumb spirit...when it heard and spoke, as written.... Mark 9:25-26 When Jesus saw that the people came running together, He rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, "Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him." And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, "He is dead."I wasn't seeing it clearly. Jesus isn't saying the spirit itself is deaf and dumb but it, the devil, is the spirit that causes others to be deaf and dumb. It is the spirit of deaf and dumbness. It keeps souls from hearing and speaking the Words of our Lord.
