Hoping for some fresh thoughts on ... I've been contemplating it for about a week. If the purpose of Jesus' and his disciples miracles, were to vindicate the authority of the message they were sharing, then why were the Jewish Exorcists also able to cast out demons? If God was verifying to the Jewish community that Jesus was the Messiah by casting out a demon from a deaf and blind man. Then why would God also allow the Jewish Exorcists to cast out demons in His Name? My thoughts:1. Perhaps their exorcism had stopped at the beginning of Jesus ministry...2. Perhaps Satan was trying to validate Judaism, keeping its believers away from Christ's teaching. (however, Jesus was going town-to-town casting out many demons - Satan's army was taking a big hit as is - why would he divide his house to further doom). 3. Does God work through someone who does not believe in him? (OT examples of God using unbelievers to humble Israel and turn their head from their idolatry)... (NT examples of God giving 'evil' angels authority in Revelation). If you are inclined to this possible solution - My posed question is for what purpose?
Luk "Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and a divided household falls. Luk And if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebul. Luk And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. Luk But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

Well using Luke 11 I am not sure we are seeing these verses the same I dont see your question as being applicable if Im reading it right. First these are not just Jews they are Pharisees and not just any Pharisees in that these are the group that Herod put in power to replace the true Levite Priesthood God had appointed... These particular ruling pharisees were the ones who were responsable for wanting Jesus arrested and killed. (we might even call some of them tares) These pharisees are mocking Jesus Luke 11:14 "And He was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered." this man possessed by a spirit of the devil that made him dumb; he couldn't talk. When the devil came out of this man, he could talk. Luke 11:15 "But some of them said, "He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils.""Beelzebub", means the "lord of the flies", another name for Satan.Another words some are saying Jesus of casting out devils in the name of the devil Luke 11:16 "And others, tempting Him, sought of Him a sign from heaven." Those standing around watching Jesus command this devil to leave this dumb man, tempted Jesus by trying to get Him to admit that He was Messiah. Jesus had healed the sick, cast out devils, raised people from the dead, and made five loaves of bread and two fish to feed over five thousand people, and these people still can't see that Jesus is the Messiah. They still want a sign from Him. Luke 11:17 "But He, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, "Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth." Jesus could read their thoughts in their minds, and Jesus told them that no kingdom that is divided will stand, or family that is divided within itself can hold together. Luke 11:18 "If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub." In the same light, Jesus is saying; "if I can cast our devils in Beelzebub, or Satan's name, then his house must be in complete disorder." Jesus is asking them; "Would Satan do something to harm/or against himself?" This would be the same thing as me telling you I am casting out the spirit of Christ in you in the name of Christ ... God cant not work against himself and neither can Satan Luke 11:19 "And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out: therefore shall they be your judges." So Jesus is asking these Pharisees and scribes; "If I cast these devils out by Beelzebub, or Satan; Then who do your sons cast them out?" Think what this is saying. Jesus is asking these so called religious people(pharisees), "By who's name do your sons cast out devils?" Of course the answer is, "Their sons simply can not cast out devils, not to count these boys were dumb, couldn't speak, and thus could not cast them out in anyone's name." This dumb boy that couldn't talk was standing before them, and now he could talk. The point was, who did the healing? Who cast out the devils? Was it these religious people? Of course not. Jesus says You and your sons be the judges, for you witnessed the casting out of the devils. accuse them of the very same thing that they accused Jesus of. They have nothing to judge by, for they have never cast any devils out of anybody. Luke 11:20 "But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you.""But if I, [Jesus], with the finger [or Spirit] of God do cast out devils, [then there can be] no doubt that the kingdom of God has come upon you." When I call devils out of people in God's authority, then the kingdom of God is with you. These people wanted a sign and they got that sign when Jesus cast out these devils, yet they could not see or understand that sign.

Well these particular jewish people in the bible could not cast out deomons as jesus did, the answer is simple as well in Mark 3:23 and Mark 3:26. The only way that we have power to do such things is in Luke 10:19. And if we dont cast out in christ name there is no cure its just show.

Great insight Christina! I really appreciate your help and what you are saying makes much more sense than my own thoughts! I love fellowship! It would be interesting to know, apart form the bible if Jewish documents produce any "evidence" of exorcists claiming to cast out demon's from that same time period. I would guess that there is information, whether reliable or not, that claims Jewish Exorcism near the time of Jesus. However, that seems like a lofty question for a discussion forum. That being said - I did spend a brief period of time looking at documents historians validate to objectively derive fact-based information from, as they try to piece together the character of Christ, and the culture in which he lived. But I could not find anything claiming exorcism by someone practicing Judaism. Thanks again and God Bless!
