On another forum someone asked if they could be a prophet while attending college or their job. I found the question interesting, especially when considering what today's prophet would be. Exactly what is a prophet? What are they called to do for it is our Father that calls them?

1 Corinthians 12:28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

Ephesians 4:11-12 And He gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

There is a difference in prophets that must be noted for Jesus tells us....

Matthew 11:13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.

His truths were told before His Advent when the Father spoke through the prophets. "The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun." [Ecc.1:9]

The prophets that foretold, prophesied the Word of the Lord, are written. There will be no "new thing!" Jesus said, "But take ye heed: behold, I have foretold you all things." [Mark 13:23] So today's prophets aren't to foretell new things but they are....

Amos 3:7 Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but He revealeth His secret unto His servants the prophets.

Ephesians 3:5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto His holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;

It is revealed to the apostles and prophets...the teachers aren't mentioned as receiving revelation. Biblical prophets foretold events, as revealed by God and...those things were all written. Today's prophets are taught by the Holy Spirit and He reveals the deeper meaning of His written Word. A "teacher" teaches what is written, the "letter," or "milk" of the Word. A "prophet" delves deeper and shares the spiritual meaning, the "meat," of the written word as revealed to them by the Spirit.

2 Corinthians 3:6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.

John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Well speaking for myself as a prophet of the lord you have to understand this, there are certain rules for prophets that are very hard to follow and take much discipline:

1. Never prophecie falsley
2. Make sure that you talk to god before you prophecie
3. When you have dreams or visions always discern what the prophecy is and who its coming from (satan or god)
4. There are distinct communication patters that god will work through. Visions, dreams, prayer and meditation
5. when you do prophicy always make sure you can back up what you say with scripture
6. Aviod large crouds, theres always a nutcase or two in the crowd that will teach something contrary to gods word
7. All prophecies belong to god not man. 2nd Peter 1:21

Thats basically all the information i have to say, hope it helps :)

Ok i will try to relate some information to you:

Forgivness: Exodus 23:4, Exodus 23:5 and Proverbs 25:22

Thats it for the time being i wil have to do some more scripture research and meditation before i can acuritly say anything, although realize this your talking to a person who was heavily involved into buddhism and taoism from the age of 19-21 basically. Then from then on i abandoned my old ways and cut off the junk in false religion i got back into gods word and exaulting myself and being gods slave. In retrospect i was raised spiritually from the dead and came back full force to serve the lord.

Ephesians 4:11-16

[sup]11[/sup] Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. [sup]12[/sup] Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. [sup]13[/sup] This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ.

[sup]14[/sup] Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won’t be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth. [sup]15[/sup] Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church. [sup]16[/sup] He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.

One cannot be a prophet unless one is called to be a prophet, oherwise you are a false prophet, it is not something you learn in prophet school it is taught throught the Holy spirirt alone, as is a teacher, if you are not called then you are a hireling, its God that calls, it isnt a thought ot a feeling or a carrere prospect as ,many seem to make it. it is a direct call from God.

I wholeheartedly agree! There are too many out in the Christian world today who profess to be a prophet. This is one big area the Christian community must improve on.

The problem with prophets and teachers today as well as passed ages is they only hear and see what higher headquarters has to say, what the Pope or well known religious leader has to say, and not Christ. They have a Saul Anointing not a David.

Moses, your avatar was one I used on another forum. Seeing it again brings back good feelings...it's a shame I was banned. Oh well, I'm glad someone else has that wonderful Golden Retriever.

II Peter 1:21
For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

Think that is the obvious number one detail with a true prophet. It's like Solomon said in Song of Songs, there is just nothing new under the sun. We see false prophets all over the Old Testament, and the epidemic seems to be repeated over and over again. Either your prophecy is from God - where you are the mouthpiece - or it's not. Like sister Whirl has illustrated here, a prophet doesn't just teach, they reveal something that only the spirit can reveal. As 1 Corinthians 12:28 illustrates, not everyone is a prophet. I wouldn't say it's a common position, and it's something where when God gives you a message, you have a purpose and know that it's from God.

Excellent succinct study! :)
