Come on, Marks. If you're going to join this conversation, please come in at speed, LoL. You honestly think no one was proclaiming they had a spiritual gift during New Testament times? Maybe it was all "hush, hush" or something. I know, only the apostles could whisper if so and so actually had a gift or not, Lol. But the command of the NT was, "DON'T TELL ANYBODY, WHATEVER YOU DO!!" LoL.
Ridicule instead of a response . . .

I'll give you a second chance.

:)

The question came up about how freely we announce our "spiritual gifts".

Why would we do it?

I mean, if I think I have such and such gift, where is the importance of announcing that to you?

To me, spiritual gifts are God's business, not ours. To me, our gifts are so that we can share God's love through practical help to someone in need with whom we are in contact.

Why would we go beyond the use of our gifts, into a proclamation of what gift(s) I think I have?

I think spiritual gifts are to be used, not announced. I think that people are often more concerned with how they look to others than they are with simply serving those others, and they want to make sure everyone knows how gifted they are.

I wouldn't doubt that many people over the years have announced what they believe, or want others to believe, are their spiritual gifts. Where does anyone in the Bible do this?

What it the benefit if I tell you I think I have the gift of teaching, and prophesy, and discerning of spirits? Or whatever gifts I think? How does this help? Do you listen to me because I tell you have have the gift of teaching?

Much love!

My friend came by the other night and announced to me that he had the gift of exaltation the other night,,,,, self exaltation he exclaimed. This is not a joke!

Ok, now this:
I think spiritual gifts are to be used, not announced.

Is different than this:
I mean, if I think I have such and such gift, where is the importance of announcing that to you?

The former is a decent point, and I agree. The latter is a just bad teaching. I realize you think I'm being insulting, but what do you want me to say? Find me the words you would be comfortable with that communicate the same point and I will use them. But the importance of knowing one's own gifts as well as the gifts of those you are in fellowship with is so that you know how the Spirit can use one another.

Marks, I don't mean to be insulting, but I swear you are smarter than this. You think musicians that want to form a band together are not going to specify what instrument they play? You think they'll just get together and wing it?

I'm gonna have to take a break. I honestly try to respond as respectfully as I know how, but how do I respond at all to some of your logic when it's such a mess?

If I’m honest I try not to get too serious with any discussion here due to the fact I know my opinions and doctrinal positions are subject to change. I’ve had it happen several times, I don’t believe it’s due to a lack of faith, I believe it’s more due to a lack of knowledge.

It’ll be obvious when the instruments come out of their covers.

Anne Steele (1717-1778) comes to mind:

"O may these heav'nly pages be
My ever-dear delight;
And still new beauties may I see,
And still increasing light."

Well we're supposed to! Hell, if I thought absolutely no one on the planet was ever going to take what I posted into consideration, what would be the point? I realize most forum members are already set in their doctrines, but who knows what visitors are thinking.

Cheer up, LoL. There's gotta be someone out there getting something out of all this : )
And to be honest my focus is usually on the essentials such as the Trinity, Deity of Christ- His 2 natures, The gospel, the bodily Resurrection, Ascension and 2nd Coming of Jesus, salvation by grace through faith. I seldom wander off into secondary issues that are not salvific in nature like this thread. Its an anomaly these days with me. There are bigger fish to fry so to speak if you get my drift H.I.M.

"the latter" was a question intended to cause one to consider the answer.

I realize you think I'm being insulting, but what do you want me to say?
What I think is that you are trying to dismiss me without engaging with what I'm saying.

Find me the words you would be comfortable with that communicate the same point and I will use them. But the importance of knowing one's own gifts as well as the gifts of those you are in fellowship with is so that you know how the Spirit can use one another.

Just stay on your side of the fence, stop with trying to make me look ridiculous and just respond to what I'm saying.

Marks, I don't mean to be insulting, but I swear you are smarter than this. You think musicians that want to form a band together are going to not specify what instrument they play? It's like, what do you think? People just get together and wing it?

Is the body of Christ like a rock band? We don't rule ourselves. The Holy Spirit guides us as He sees fit.

I'm not into analyzing myself, and coming to my conclusions of God's program with me. I'm into seeking after Him, and serving those in front of me, and letting God worry about how this is going to happen.

I'm gonna have to take a break. I honestly try to respond as respectfully as I know how, but how do I respond at all to some of your logic when it's such a mess?

With a question if there is something you don't understand. With an actual response if there is something you want to comment on.

Or you can make the discussion all about me, again.

Much love!

Yes, it will. But the idea that no one can say "I'm a bass player" or "I'm a drummer" in advance is just an incredibly bizarre notion to me.

But I gotta get out of here. Apparently saying so is somehow being insulting.

I'm here partly to put myself to the test, to see if there are issues with what I think. I enjoy smart, educated people who disagree with me, and enjoy discussing those disagreements, and can do so nicely.

I've learned things, others have learned things, it can be good if it's done properly, lovingly.

Much love!

Not insulting in the least to me, I believe I believe the Spirit within you truly yearns.

We're told to not even be talking about whether we've received wisdom from God, instead, just to show that by the good lives we live.

I fail to see the usefulness of focusing on ourselves in this way.

Look at how Paul was . . . comparing talking about his "credentials" if you will to lunacy! How are we different?

Much love!
