God is working on Israel.
Ezekiel 36:24-28 (NKJV)
24 For I will take you from among the nations, gather you out of all countries, and bring you into your own land.
25 Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols.
26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
27 I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.
28 Then you shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; you shall be My people, and I will be your God.

Very practical answer, from a fleshy point of view. But, Jesus clearly gave taught us to "resist not evil", and His example at His arrest demonstrates that even self-defense is not Godly. Nevertheless, "the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."

Well Jesus was arrested for "His Faith". We are not to resist authority like that!

But if a person is coming to harm my wife- I am required by God to defend her!

Yes. You are required to help her. That is what biological humans do - protect their genetics. There is a deep, instinctual urge which pushes us to protect our family and protect our offspring. This is based on our genetics which has programmed us to make sure our family can survive and produce more children. It's merely our flesh. But, the spirit of Jesus is quite different from our biology. We are not a slave to our biology/sin. We can transcend biology and become a slave to righteousness.

Wrong! we are not merely a genetic animal! Mankind was made in the image of God! Though we are fallen and most in rebellion against God, we still have this "instinct" as you call it which comes from God and not just some evolutionary by product.
