Luke 17:20 And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation:

17:21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.

Jesus was saying the kingdom of God would not come with attentive watching, but would come unexpectedly, suddenly. This can be seen from Luke 17:26-30 in which judgment came suddenly.

Jesus referred to the kingdom as coming near to them by his presence (Luke 10:11), he was among them and therefore the kingdom of God was there.

The disciples were expecting a visible kingdom to immediately appear, not a spiritual kingdom within the believer (Luke 19:11).

Jesus said to expect a kingdom that would be visible, as is lightning (Luke 17:24).

Zephaniah 3:15 The LORD hath taken away thy judgments, he hath cast out thine enemy: the king of Israel, even the LORD, is in the midst of thee: thou shalt not see evil any more.

3:16 In that day it shall be said to Jerusalem, Fear thou not: and to Zion, Let not thine hands be slack.

3:17 The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.

Joel 2:27 And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the LORD your God, and none else: and my people shall never be ashamed.

The verses above, and others, speak of the Lord as being in the midst of Israel (Isaiah 12:6 Ezekiel 28:22 Hosea 11:9 Zechariah 2:11).

Zechariah 2:10 Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion: for, lo, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee, saith the LORD.

Scripture speaks of the Lord Jesus Christ as being in the midst of Israel and is the meaning of Luke 17:21 in saying the kingdom of God is within you.

Luke 17:21:

“... the Kingdom of God is in the midst of you.” - RSV. Also NAB [‘70]; MLB; RSV; NASB; ESV; NIV; NWT.

“... the kingdom of God is among you” - NEB. Also NRSV; REB; Beck; NAB [‘91]; JB; HCSB; ISV; NJB; The New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology, Vol. 3, p. 844.

Jesus certainly would not be saying the kingdom of God was within the wicked Pharisees (“within you”) to whom he was speaking!

However, this scripture was in fact written down and applies to all who might apprehend the promise (2 Peter 1:3-4, Hebrews 11:33, 2 Corinthians 1:20, Romans 4:20-22).

So, it can be said that the kingdom of God is within those who are born again in that we (who are born again) are all submitted to the Lordship of the King of kings and the Lord of lords.

The traditional understanding of heaven is completely upside down and inside out.

We are the temple of God.

False assumption.

Jesus used the Pharisee specifically to show that the Kingdom of God is within all Life, not just the saved.

Those that are offended by that teaching will never understand just how profound the message was.

These translations literally contradict themselves.

"The Kingdom of God comes not with observation, but hey, let's all observe me standing here in the midst of you, even though I just told you not to do that."

What is the Kingdom of God like unto?

Luke 13:21
"It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened."

Where is said leaven?

Matthew 16:6
"Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees."

KJV

NT:1787
entos (en-tos'); from NT:1722; inside (adverb or noun):
KJV - within.
(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright (c) 1994, Biblesoft and International Bible Translators, Inc.)

The KJV "within" there is Greek entos, meaning 'inside'. Greek entos is used only twice in The New Testament, and both times it refers to inside as per location, not time.

If we rightly understand Lord Jesus per John 3 where He said that which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of The Spirit is spirit, then this Luke 17:21 idea shouldn't be that difficult. We are not made up of just flesh; we have a spirit also and it is not of this material fleshy world. Like Ecclesiastes 12:5-7 shows, our spirit came from God, and He is Who our spirit goes back to at flesh death. Our flesh goes back to the earthly elements where it came from.

The 'born again' idea is specifically about this idea of God's Kingdom being 'within', meaning of The Spirit dimension, not this material earthy dimension. Even Apostle Paul taught this clearly in 1 Corinthians 15 when he showed as we have borne the "image of the earthy", we shall also bear the "image of the heavenly". He was speaking of the "spiritual body" which is the resurrection type body, and the type body those on earth will be changed to on the last trump.

So in reality... God's Kingdom is not a fleshy kingdom like this present material existence with flesh bodies. It will still involve the earth He created, but the type body of the world to come is to be a spiritual body, a body as the angels (Matthew 22:30). That spirit type body will apply to all when Jesus returns, not just to His Church (see Isaiah 25 about death being swallowed up in victory).

Thus Lord Jesus literally revealed to the blind Pharisees just 'where' the kingdom of God exists, but because of their faith in their flesh, they failed to grasp the existence of the other dimension of Spirit called the heavenly, where God and His angels live. That was where our Lord Jesus was pointing to by that "within you", i.e., He was pointing directly to our spirit inside our flesh.
