This passage is a tough one, for me, to understand.

Luke 15:7 KJV - "I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance."

It seems to me that all need repentance. It seems to me that we were all, at one time, sinners.

I don't read commentaries, however, I prefer to talk to others and get their ideas. So . . . how do we make rational sense of this?

Luke 15:1-7
1) Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him.
2) And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.
3) And he spake this parable unto them, saying,
4) What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?
5) And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing.
6) And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost.
7) I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.

Jesus is telling us how people may see things one way, but in heaven it is seen differently.

The Pharisees were complaining that Jesus receives sinners who come to him. Jesus explains that the angels in heaven actually all rejoice when a single sinner turns to God.

The Pharisees saw themselves as the 99 who needed no repentance.

I think I see the same thing on this forum, as so many point their fingers, you sin, you're not saved!! I think, JMO, God would rather we encourage the weak.

Much love!

I like everything that you wrote, especially the part that has nothing to do with the OP! You are right . . . we should always encourage the weak, poor, and oppressed. We should never belittle anyone . . . challenge, yes . . . but we shouldn't belittle anyone. Thank you for that!

But . . . that's what I'm doing. I don't get it. You want me to examine the commentaries of humans who disagree with each other? Do you honestly believe that commentary from humans is Scripture? If so . . . Okie Doke, but I sure do not. And, I never will.

If you don't like what I had to say about commentaries, then you certainly won't like what I say next. If a person goes to Bible College, that's a fantastic place to learn apostasy. I'd NEVER attend (pay) a Bible college unless it taught the Doctrine of Circumcision . . . and what Bible college teaches that . . . let alone any church?

And as you have warned me, I know that you won't mind that I warn you to be careful of your judgments of your "brothers and sisters." We just might know what we're talking about. Now, I could care less if you falsely judge me . . . but . . . my Father in Heaven doesn't like it so much. And I'll let Him deal with those who falsely judge me.

Thanks for letting me have it! :)

2nd Tim,

You don't like the divergent commentaries written by human beings, yet you come to this forum to engage with those who have different views to yours and others. Don't you see your hypocrisy thundering in your posts?

What an abominable statement you made about people learning apostasy at Bible College. I've graduated from a Bible College, Seminary, and Christian-based University. I learned NO apostasy at any of them. Seems like you have a presuppositional bias against biblical education.

As for 'circumcision', what on earth are you talking about? I was circumcised as an infant and I'm jolly pleased I was.

The Scribes and Pharisees saw themselves as 'just people' by their external behaviour because they lived regular lives. However, if we read Josephus and the Talmud we learn these Jewish leaders were guilty of a pile of barefaced sins.

Oz
Hi OZ<
Doesn’t Matthew 23:2-3 speak of their “barefaced sins”?

First, I don't think that I said in my OP that I NEVER read commentary. I do, but only upon rare occasion. I would rather turn to my "brothers and sisters" here for that talk. Why go to a book when I have all of you? I would much, much rather spend my time interacting with each and every one of you, rather than page 835 of a book . . . that I can never have a discussion with.

Second, I didn't begin to understand God's Holy Word until I stopped listening to men, and began depending upon the Holy Spirit . . . which is precisely what the Old and New Testaments speak clearly about. This is why I don't get excited about the opinions of others (about me). The fact that humans can't even paraphrase me correctly, though I am RIGHT HERE, proves that even commentators cannot translate perfectly all the time, either.

1 Corinthians 2:13 NIV - "This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words."

1 Thessalonians 4:9 WEB - "But concerning brotherly love ye need not that I write to you: for ye yourselves are taught by God to love one another."
Amen brother! I too read commentaries but, I would rather come here to get my families take on things too :)
And hey, as long as we are always seeking Him, we are in good company. :)

And I know that you are genuine because your ears are open and you've demonstrated that you are willing to change your mind. And though you switched positions from the one that I still hold, you are the only person I've ever seen change their position. I am eager, even desperate to change my views . . . providing that someone can show me, clearly, that what I believe is wrong. This is why I will listen to anyone and everyone . . . because in my mind, I have no other option but to be correct in the Word of God. If I am wrong about something . . . I WANT TO CHANGE!

@Nancy Commentaries can be good; but good to go to Scripture directly... :)

Definitely. In fact, using 15 different versions of the Bible (what I do) is just about all that a person needs. I would also suggest that people lean upon commentaries because they're too lazy to read and make an attempt at understanding the entire Bible. No one will ever be able to understand the New Testament if they do not understand the Old Testament, and primarily that of Abraham and the Promise given to him, and his offspring . . . the Holy Seed of Christ.

Same here 2nd Tim, I too want to know ONLY the truth, no matter what. Sometimes I overthink things...well...most of the time I overthink things, lol. So, when someone brings out something I never even thought of from scripture, it perks my ears up and I find the need to research it. THAT can be overdone and I'm proof of that, so then, it is time for me to pull back a bit and ask God for clarification. There are so many things that I do NOT understand, or think I might understand yet...not solid on it quite yet. I would say that the diligent study God speaks of is so needed!
I too will listen to anyone as well, as long as there is substance to the post, and as long as it isn't off the wall cray cray stuff not even in The Word of God!

My blessed friend. My blessed friend! Start with the Triangle of Truth (see thumbnail below). I promise you; I guarantee you . . . that if you come to know those three sets of passages, and you process everything in the Bible that you read . . . through them, your entire understanding of the Bible will change. You will never be the same. The Triangle of Truth provides the Purpose and Work of Christ. In fact, I would say that if I had been taught these Truths, I would not have suffered as I have throughout my entire life. More than this, I would not have been victimized repeatedly. Why? Because knowing the Truth of God issues a Holy Confidence, that after having received it, I, and others will undeniably know that a miracle had been granted. When the Mysterious Plan of God finds its way into the marrow of your bones, you will never fall astray again nor will you doubt. It will be impossible.

Microsoft Word - Plan4.docx (blueletterbible.org)

The above link will walk you through the Bible as if you were reading your favorite novel. As you come to know the Triangle of Truth more and more, the Mysterious Plan of the Bible will slowly become revealed to you. Because of your deep, life-long relationship with the Bible, it will make sense to you quickly. The most important thing you will discover . . . is the unbelievable Power of God! That is what we need to understand more than anything. You will also discover Circumcision of the Heart in Abraham (Genesis 17) and see that this is the moment where Circumcision of the Heart was instituted within the life and name of Abraham. And it is here that you will learn that this is why Abraham is the Father of Faith to those who have not been physically circumcised . . . and that is because he was FIRST Spiritually Circumcised prior to being physically circumcised. And this is what would have happened to Adam and Eve should they have turned to the Tree of Life in the Garden, that the Sin Nature would have been lifted, or Circumcised, by Christ, had they simply just eaten of His Holy Fruit. You will be mindstruck to realize that it is Jesus who is that Tree of Life, that anyone who is hung on a tree is Cursed, and that Jesus became that Curse for us as He hung on that Tree upon Sweet Calvary Hill! For wherever the Tree of Life can be found, that is where we find Christ. Whatever object that Promises Eternal Life . . . that object is Christ (Bread, Blood). Christ is the Rock, that when split open, the Holy Spirit spills forth.

All of the Bible points to the Work of Jesus as described in Colossians 2:9-15. Circumcision of the Heart is the utter Core of the Entire Bible, permeating through it, all in the most unbelievable fashion. And if you come to see this Mysterious Plan, you can know, with Full Certainty, that you have been chosen to understand what is Truly taking place within this unbelievable book that we call the Bible. And when you see and know this Mysterious Plan, you will know that we worship the most unbelievable, incredible God imaginable, for no human being could write this story . . . this incredible, hidden story. Considering the Mysterious Plan, the hidden message of God's Word, is so unbelievable, that when you see it, you will know that you are a True Child of God.

Follow that daily reading plan and do not move on past a verse until you believe you understand it as best as you can (sometimes you might take hours on a single passage). Print out that Triangle of Truth and study those three sets heavily before beginning the daily reading plan. I am confident that God will walk you through the entire Bible and show you His Truth more and more each time you read it. If you are diligent, you can read the entire Bible twice within one year. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy. :D

Wonderful post, and timely...for sure. Yes, for sure NO man could have written the Bible...would have been impossible, IMHO :)

The triangle comes up as a pic and I see the verses but, it is not allowing me to download the file. It has the 3 verses but why the triangle?? Am I to meditate on the top one first? the middle one? one of the others? Lol...Thank you for the encouragement brother and, I promise I will meditate on this triangle of verses. I will take my time and just, allow the Spirit to clear the mind and just go with the flow of His words. Amen??!!

AMEN, my friend!

Okay, so the two sets of verses from Ephesians are on the bottom because they support Colossians 2:9-15. They talk about the Mysterious Plan of God, and that Plan revolves around the Doctrine of Circumcisions, the Spiritual Circumcision of Christ, the Holy Operation of God. These three passage sets express the Purpose of Christ and more importantly, the Holy Work of Christ.

When I read Colossians 2:9-15 from the NLT translation, that's when all other translations began to make sense . . . especially the King James Version. Because of the NLT, I have discovered how Truly valuable to the KJV is. In fact, the KJV expresses the Doctrine of Circumcision better, BETTER than all other translations. So if you can, and you have an NLT, CSB, or even a SLAB translation, these will do wonderfully! But as said, other translations throw it plenty of Bible bacon-bits to help clarify the Word even more. The more translations you read and ponder, the greater and more perfect your Biblical understanding will be.

Key: Stay away from commentaries and just pray to God that He will show you the Truth. With the Triangle of Truth as your base, the Lord will show you the Truth . . . and you won't even have to ask me anything. You will be given the Core of the Entire Bible, the hidden Mysterious Plan of God . . . which is the True Gospel that no church is teaching today. But you will be given this Truth . . . and when you begin to see the Plan of God on just about every page of the Bible, you will know that you have been Chosen by God. No one can see this Hidden Plan of God unless they are Enabled. I will pray that you are Enabled!

I would study each of those passage-sets in the Triangle of Truth. Set up an account on the blueletterbible.com site, and there you can easily use many translations, and use the cross-reference tools. Stay away from the commentaries, as they do not teach the Doctrine of Circumcision, thus, their interpretations of the Bible do not make rational sense (especially that Guzik commentator). But ultimately, I think that just by learning what those combined verses have to say (the Triangle of Truth), they will help you to understand nearly every story in the Bible, and why there being told. As said, because of your existing knowledge of the Bible, this will make much sense to you more quickly than a person who has never cracked open a Bible.

You can email me at [email protected] and I'll send the actual file so that you can print it out.

You're going to be Okay, Nancy. :)

Thanks 2ndTim, yes...I know I will always be okay :) It looks like there are many "Triangles of Truth" out there, is the first time I have ever heard the term! lol. I have already saved the three scriptures and will meditate on them asthe whole of your post so I can read it again.

The KJV is mostly what I think in but, I do have the NLT and yes, it has clarified much!! As well as the NASB, KJN, NKJV and the ASB along with other study tools yet. Thanks for the email. I will send mine to you as well but...we have REALLY derailed your thread!!!
thanks for the prayers!

Outstanding! Your knowledge, experience, and willingness to do these things is rare. Once you feel like you grasp exactly what these three passage sets are saying, then begin reading the entire Bible in a timeline, chronological order . . . you won't believe it. You just will not believe what God will show you. :)

Oh, I forgot to mention that this thread has not been derailed, but I'd say that it has fulfilled its Holy Purpose. Why? Because all Scripture points to Jesus . . . all of it.

John 5:39 NLT - "You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me!"

The above verse is what I call a Keystone Passage of the Bible. It is a Must Know passage. Have fun!
