Hello from Canada!

Very blessed to be here with you. It's nice being among more brothers and sisters in Christ. In response to the question, I think it's more about personal preference. I myself got my ears pierced for the first time in my pre-teens or early teens (I forget). It could be done earlier if parents and their children mutually consent.

@Gideons300 Actually I think frankly getting a small tattoo for young ppl functions not too differently from what getting double/extra ear piercings was, a couple of decades ago: something that so many young ppl get, but no particular meaning necessarily behind it.

@TLHKAJ It can be worth doing at some stage or other anyway because Christmas is exactly the sort of time when earring tend to feature sometimes as gifts or in wish lists, right?
Poor excuse, brother. lol
I don't buy earrings as gifts. To me, that would be something of personal preference. If I wore earrings, I'd want to pick out my own earrings based on my likes and what went with my outfits, etc. I don't even usually buy clothes as gifts unless it's for a baby or child.

I don't wear earrings because my ears ripped when I was a child. Idk if I would wear them much now even if I was able to.

@TLHKAJ Well, like I said, they do tend to feature in wish lists for gifts, anyway... and some wearers are known to specialize in big hoops, or pendants, or whatever...

I suppose they might. I have never had anyone request earrings as a gift, or anyone show me a wish list. lol

Probably off topic, but let me tell you what my son did (my son who passed away last January). It was early January, and he discussed with me what we should buy for his (future) brother-in-law's birthday, what meal we should have for him, his sister (my daughter), etc...he planned what we should do when his sister and brother-in-law walked through the door.
Then, he told me what we should buy for his dad (my husband) for his birthday, the meal we should prepare for him, the whole nine yards. And he sent me the links on Amazon to purchase these gifts. Both my husband and son-in-law have February birthdays. My son went Home before we could carry those plans out.

He wanted to get his dad a special electric razor/trimmer with all sorts of attachments and fix him chicken spaghetti, garlic bread, salad.

But for his brother-in-law, he wanted us to get him some cool toe socks, and .......some flavored CRICKETS!! LOL! I mean actual crickets that have flavors...bacon cheddar, sour cream and onion, etc. Lol :) Then, he wanted us to have some confetti that you spray from a can so that when his sister and brother-in-law walked through the door, we would spray them with it. Haha! That reflected the kind of relationship they had. They had so much fun, lots of laughs together. My son Matthew made a huge impact on my son-in-law, and on all who knew him.

I guess I just wanted an excuse to talk and reminisce about my boy. I'm missing him so much. But also ....gifts are even more about the heart behind the giving than the actual gift. Something as silly as toe socks and flavored crickets don't cost a lot, and yet they brought so much joy and comfort to both my son-in-law and my daughter when he/my son-in-law received them after my son passed.

@TLHKAJ As the anniversary of his passing comes round may you indeed know the peace of God (John 14.27).

@I'mBlessed Yes, it's often deemed worthwhile doing it at about that age, isn't it; and nowadays when a bit older 2 or 3 holes each side are often gotten to make it special, aren't they.

@TLHKAJ As in the dialogue:

"So what do you want for Christmas?"

"Umm, chocolates, earrings or flowers..."

(Or...in the silent question: "What shall I get her for Christmas? chocolates, earrings or flowers?"....)

Those three: chocolates, earrings and flowers are often very safe staples for gift lists, IMHO.... :)

If someone bought me flowers, I'd want something I could put into the ground like a bush ...rose bush or azealia, etc. lol

But I don't do the traditional Christmas gift-buying and I never ask for anything for Christmas. I buy my kids things for their birthdays or give them money so they can get what they want. Sometimes my husband and I just hand them money when they come to visit if we have it...something to cover gas, food, and a little extra. Giving doesn't have to be centered around a holiday or birthday. Giving is a way of life....you see a need, and if you have something to fill the need, you give. :)
My oldest son is saving up for something specific, so I just give him money rather than buy something he may not need or want. And he doesn't have piercings. lol (Even if he did, I wouldn't buy him earrings. lol)

@TLHKAJ The spiritual basis for the subject of giving is really 2 Cortinthians 9.15, isn't it? "Thanks be unto God for His unspeakable gift."

"Blessed be God, our God,
Who gave for us His well-beloved Son,
The gift of gifts, all other gifts in one,
Blessed be God, our God." (Horatius Bonar)

I reckon at least some of your son's contemporaries have in fact gotten earlobes shot through with a bit of jewelry...

(Young men and boys started doing it decades back already when their sisters ... and moms ... started putting doubles in each earlobe; it was then that some of the boys started doing one earlobe and moms ... often with doubles in both ears ... would allow it in the interests of fairness...)

it is an individual choice. My ears are pierced because I like wearing pretty earrings but I know Christian brothers in my church who had their ears pierced as a sign they belonged to Jesus.. It's a matter of taste. Most women have pierced ears these days and if men want an ear piercing too no probs.
From back, @Pearl Yes, within a family I reckon both the womenfolk and the menfolk should go for whatever look they feel comfortable with, wholesomely and heartily, with earlobes bare or studded.
