one can talk about what they know and speculate, theorize about what they don't know. all men know sin, but who knows the Lord?
Maybe you have something there. Everyone knows the battle against sin. It's won by intimacy with God, which is enjoyed as we understand the forgiveness of sins.

So do we really get how reconciled to God we are? Maybe that's it. There's doubt about our reconciliation. Even while we were His outright enemies He restored us to His friendship. So now that we've received the reconciliation, what is there to question? We are reconciled to God.

Much love!

That's not a proof-text of some future work of grace in our lives, it is speaking of Paul being able to again offer them assistance.

I didn't call it a proof text...I will call it an evidentiary text.

Paul says in 1 Thessalonians...an epistle to believers...that "Faithful is he who calleth you, who also will do it." (1 Thessalonians 5:24).

Do what? I suggest you look it up, preferably in the kjv...because almost every other version has this watered down.

So then, the Lord is going to (in the future) sanctify believers wholly and preserve them blameless in their spirit and soul and body unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ...

This would indicate a second benefit.

Hello @marks,

The enemy of our souls knows (if Christians do not) that Christ is the source of all our strength and blessing. His one aim, therefore, is to keep the heart from being occupied with Christ. Any means will serve his purpose so long as this can be accomplished. So he will occupy,
The sinner with his sins,
The penitent with his repentance
The believer with his faith
The servant with his service
and the saint with his holiness.
Anything so long as it is not Christ. How many are being perplexed and hindered by being directed to this self-occupation?

Looking unto Christ, now risen and glorified and sat at God's right hand, in the knowledge that in God's reckoning we have been raised and seated with Him there: and looking for His appearing in the sure hope of appearing with Him in glory. This is the antidote to self absorption. With a heart filled with praise for the finished work of Christ who has secured us for eternity by His one all-sufficient sacrifice.

Thank you
In Christ Jesus
Chris

I believe that the main teaching on how to deal with temptation is a type of reverse psychology that the Lord uses on us when we come to the knowledge of His grace in our lives.

The law has the effect of exacerbating temptation as a kind of "forbidden fruit" or "wet paint" principle.

When we are told not to do something, the flesh rises up within us and says, "I can do that if I want to".

But grace takes away the penalty of sin and so the law is no longer an element that presents to us "forbidden fruit"...because now there is no condemnation for them who are in Christ Jesus (John 5:24 (kjv))...and those who are in Christ do not walk after the flesh but after the Spirit (Romans 8:1 (kjv)).

So then, because there is no condemnation for us, the law now only behaves as a set of wisdom principles rather than a hard taskmaster that condemns us when we fail.

Therefore, the principle of the law, that it produces all manner of concupiscence (Romans 7:7-13) has been dealt with by the concept of grace.

The more we realize that we are not condemned if we violate the principle of the law, the more we find that temptation no longer has any sway in our lives.

But until we come to that understanding, it is also important that we resist temptation (see James 1:12-16, 1 Peter 1:6-7) and learn that the only way we can overcome sin in our lives is through the grace of God; which also enables us to resist temptation when we lose sight of the fact that we are covered by the grace of God. Because the devil then comes in and tells us that we are covered by the grace of God even if we sin...after that he has btought in the law to exacerbate sin...thus he turns grace into license.

So we must at the point that the law has come in, seek to resist the devil and he will flee from us. We must seek to come back to the understanding that we are covered by the grace of the Lord without falling back into the temptation of thinking that such grace is a license to sin...

It is a fine line that I still find sometimes that I do not know the way to escape. I find that it is necessary to never allow the law to come in and tempt me rather than attempt to deal with that temptation after the law has had its effect of making that sin appealing.

And the Lord has given me the victory over a short period of time. I find that it is wisdom to be on guard against temptation any time that I begin to think that I am standing and doing well (1 Corinthians 10:12-13).

A good word in all of this is to remember that if we take advantage of the grace of the Lord and sin; when we know that He has given us grace so that if we do sin, it will not be to our condemnation; that we are in effect insulting the Spirit of grace and taking grace for granted in our lives.

Therefore to sin willfully would be out of the question; while if we sin unintentionally or ignorantly, we find that the grace of the Lord is there and He will pick us up when we fall. For the righteous falls seven times and gets back up again; but the wicked fall into mischief--Proverbs 24:16.

Also, see Psalms 37:23-24; but consider also that in the New Testament we have it even better, in Jude 1:24, 2 Peter 1:10, and 1 john 2:10.

Goodness, you make it sound so complicated.

Has anyone else noticed that threads which discuss our salvation become so focused on sin?

Why is that?

Salvation is through faith in Christ.

Why aren't we talking more about that?

Much love!
if one does understand sin and what is cost then why would they need a Savior ?

saving from what ?

I'm not sure what your first question mean, but to the second, saved from sin and death.

Hi @marks,

Saved to what? Is the question that holds the greatest joy to a believer, don't you think? It also keeps our minds stayed upon Christ.

Thank you

Because legalism is deeply rooted in the heart of men. People do not like being in any control of their salvation, so sins causing you to lose salvation is a way for our pride to have some control. It is a lie of course but that is the biggest reason why people keep focusing on sins or the lack thereof.

That's why the Baptism with the Holy Spirit is so important.

Jesus told new Christians to wait upon the power from up high.
It was a commandment, given by Christ!

And it came as "a mighty wind with tongues of fire".....it changed everything!

Sad that this is only preached in a few churches.
In my opinion it is one of the most important event in a Christian's life!

The Holy Spirit brings conviction when sin tries to enter into a Christian.

Well it happens the moment one accepts Christ as Savior.

It is the spirit that regenerates us and makes us new Creatures, and it is the Sprit that Baptizes us into the body of Christ!

Saved to know the love of our Creator, and to love Him in return. May we all in faith drink deeply of His love!

That does indeed come across as profound.

However, it should be clear that the Holy Spirit inspired Paul to write the words that are also profound, that the law is a schoolmaster to lead men to Christ (Galatians 3:24). That it shows us that we are sinners in need of a Saviour (Romans 3:20). That it has the power to convert us (Psalms 19:7 (kjv)).

So, I wouldn't completely downplay the reality of the benefits of thinking on biblical issues such as sin. The Bible speaks of them for a reason; and when we come across these concepts in our reading of holy scripture, we are not to discount them, saying, "But I need to focus on Christ." Jesus said, "In the volume of the book it is written of me." (Hebrews 10:7). So, whatever topic we may be reading about in when we study the scriptures, Christ is the primary topic.

Goodness, you make it sound so complicated.

It may seem that way until you get it. When it finally clicks, it brings real victory.

So, I would say to you, don't give up on understanding the concepts.

I wrote a piece about the principle in question and will link you to it below:

I don't like those versions for 1 John 3:3...

Because 1 John 3:3 is to be used in conjunction with a few other verses in order to prove the doctrine of entire sanctification.

1Jo 3:7, Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.

1Jo 3:3, And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

1Jo 2:6, He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

There is a problem when you have people preaching that repentance is not necessary for salvation.

In Hebrews it says we will move on to bigger and better things in doctrine, if the Lord permits.

The Lord will not permit us to go to other doctrines if people are preaching false doctrine as concerning the basics.

As long as that is occurring, God will raise people up to combat false doctrine and this means preaching on the subject of sin where false doctrine is being preached on that subject.

Exactly! Jesus said we MUST be born again. That means that we will supernaturally lose the desire to sin when the laws of God are written on our hearts, which is just the opposite of our old carnal nature that was in opposition to God's righteousness and makes the common man struggle with his flesh. I remember the feeling of being light as a feather, like the weight of sin had been lifted out of me when I was filled with Christ's Spirit and born again. I'll never forget it. The false doctrine that only the condemnation of sin has been done away with, period, instead of sin itself being taken away is a doctrine of demons. Can you imagine how happy it makes Satan who knows that sin will keep us out of heaven. Hebrews 12:14 - "without holiness no man shall see God." And Revelation 22:11. The state of our nature when we die is how we will be forever. Carnal natures will not enter heaven.

Justification and Sanctification are back to back. Justification is looking back at being cleansed of all our past sin and the carnal nature that spawned sin, and Sanctification is looking forward as one set apart for good works. Being justified and sanctified is being born again. Then comes the life-long process of maturing the fruit of the Spirit called glorification, John 17:20-23, 2 Peter 1:5-7

Justification is looking back at being cleansed of all our past sin and the carnal nature that spawned sin,
Justification is also in that we've been removed from the source our our sin, the flesh. Once we had our life in our flesh - we were alive because we were flesh creatures with mind, soul. Now we are in the Spirit, that is, we have life because we are united to Christ, and the Spirit of Christ is in us. No longer of flesh, but of the Spirit. "The one who has died is justified away from sin."

Much love!
