On July 4, 1776, Founding Fathers wrote the United States Declaration of Independence.
Twenty years later... The Government of America is already denying and denouncing its existence as a Christian nation. I found this very interesting.


The Treaty of Tripoli (Treaty of Peace and Friendship between the United States of America and the Bey and Subjects of Tripoli of Barbary) was signed in 1796. It was the first treaty between the United States of America and Tripoli (now Libya) to secure commercial shipping rights and protect American ships in the Mediterranean Sea from local Barbary pirates.

Treaty of Tripoli Article 11

Art. 11. As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Mussulmen (Muslims); and as the said States never entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mahometan (Mohammedan) nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries. This treaty was signed by John Adams.

My question then is on WHAT basis do people believe that United States is a CHRISTIAN NATION? This is not a mocking or fishing question... It's an honest one... Why do so many Christians consider America a Christian nation?

In 1892 Frances Bellamy wrote the Pledge of Allegiance... The "addition" of Under God did NOT occur until June 14th, 1954. It was Dwight Eisenhower who decided to add it.

“I pledge allegiance to my flag and the Republic for which it stands — one Nation indivisible — with liberty and justice for all.”

And... as far as currency goes... The motto E-Pluribus Unum ( Out of many, one ) was the original to be found on American coinage.

In God we trust was added to American paper currency AFTER the civil war in 1956.

So... some time after the civil war... It seems that someone decided that America was a Christian nation. It was not the founders of America like I've heard told a great many times.

without going into history of which you could do yourself. Its not likely a American historian posts here.

but

Thomas Jefferson did have his own edited bible he worked on and is still available today. much of the precepts in the constitution are precepts establish in England by sir Edward Coke. there is a book about him also. England was at that time a "Christian kingdom" via the king was vicar of the church of England and the KJV was translated when England parted ways with the RCC. I believe it was that Queen Elizabeth, King James' mother, was excommunicated by the Vatican. Washington made famous statement that a nation needs a God or something to that effect.

Franklin I do believe was a Quaker. thing is England was a Christian nation of its own proclamation and all of those who formed the US of A then were British subjects before they rebelled. for example, in the days of the rebellion no men were required to carry their rifles to church services in readiness for a response.

thing is even if the leaders of the day weren't devote followers of Christ, they most defiantly respected the population that they served and needed support of which was basically Christian. which is what the battle is about to day. the gov and media keep testing to see if they have to continue to respect Christianity or not.

America may not be "a Christian nation" (a theocracy) per se but that does not mean that is was not founded on Christian principles, as seen in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

1. "...the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God..." [Note: Even though many believed in Deism, they recognized the God of the Bible as God the Creator.]

2. "...We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness—..."

3. ...We, therefore, the Representatives of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the World for the Rectitude of our Intentions..."

4. We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. [Note: Blessings only come from God]

Also, the treaty of Tripoli simply states that America is not a Christian nation. It does not deny the fundamental Christian principles noted above. Because religion in the USA could not be a state religion (since freedom of religion was guaranteed under the Constitution) no treaty of the USA could claim that it was a Christian nation.

They used to call the UK a Christian country but now, as well as being multi faith, there seem to be far more non-believers than Christians. And also to be called a Christian nation the government should be setting Christian standards instead of listening to minority voices and making laws that offend God's principles.

But the bible tells us that, "Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end." Isaiah 9:7

And we should be glad that the Church in other countries is growing even if we aren't seeing the increase where we are.

I don't mean to rain on your parade, so to speak, but you might want to read the very scholarly article I posted in this thread a while back.

Did America Have a Christian Founding?

Thank you for your explanation... I am not convinced that America or any piece of LAND can be labelled as Christian. I think this is what separates Americans with Canadians actually is this pledge of allegiance which is the birthing of patriotism. I think it is this patriotism that has caused such anger to the point of desiring to invoke civil war. This is something I do not... nor will I ever understand.

Obviously proving something with a legal document does not change the minds of so many who think America is a Christian nation.
I do wonder what God thinks about that.

Since God has blessed America richly for a long time, and there are many Christians in America, you should give that some thought.
Well... perhaps the blessings are about to stop.. or so it seems with all this mess. Anyways.... time will tell.
