I was questioned by my children on why I have stopped consuming pork, shrimp, crab, etc. They wondered for they, as many others, see the following:

Matthew 15:9-11 But in vain they do worship Me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. And He called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand: Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.

That was spoken to "the multitude," but to His disciples He said....

15:16-20 And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding? Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught? But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.

If we consume poisons are they "cast out into the draught?" Certainly not so the "whatsoever entereth in at the mouth" must be qualified. Also, we know that eating with unwashed hands won't defile us but can certainly give us some terrible diseases. Jesus tells us that man is not defiled by what he eats which means...isn't made profane...it has nothing to do with those foods causing illness or even death. The question then would be...is it the same with "unclean foods," foods He tells us are unclean and therefore not fit for consumption?

Deuteronomy 14:2-3 For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God, and the LORD hath chosen thee to be a peculiar people unto Himself, above all the nations that are upon the earth. Thou shalt not eat any abominable thing.

Deuteronomy 12:32 What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.

From [Leviticus 11] we are given a detailed list of unclean, abominable foods...swine, fish without scales and fins etc. and He tells us....

Leviticus 11:46 This is the law of the beasts, and of the fowl, and of every living creature that moveth in the waters, and of every creature that creepeth upon the earth: To make a difference between the unclean and the clean, and between the beast that may be eaten and the beast that may not be eaten.

Well, I know from experience that barbecue, ham, bacon, shrimp and crabs are very tasty so is God restricting them to test us, to punish us, to deprive us? No, rather it is for our health. They are scavengers....created to cleanse the earth and sea. We can eat them and we aren't defiled spiritually but...will we be healthy, will we take in the poisons they consumed?

Deuteronomy 4:40 Thou shalt keep therefore His statutes, and His commandments, which I command thee this day, that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee, and that thou mayest prolong thy days upon the earth, which the LORD thy God giveth thee, for ever.

Matthew 5:17-19 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Some have been fulfilled for the laws were a shadow of things to come. For instance, the blood sacrifices in the Old Testament spoke of Jesus being the sacrificial Lamb on the cross...it was fulfilled. All blood ordinances were fulfilled.

Acts 10:9-16 On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour: And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance, And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending upon him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth: Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air. And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat. But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean. And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common. This was done thrice: and the vessel was received up again into heaven.

10:25-28 And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him. But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man. And as he talked with him, he went in, and found many that were come together. And he said unto them, Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean.

That passage speaks on two levels. Food is used metaphorically to demonstrate mankind. Gentiles were no longer to be considered common but, through belief, are of the family of God. Through their belief they are cleansed. What of food? Did Peter eat the food? No, for it was taken up. Nowhere has unclean food been declared clean...He has not cleansed it. What was unhealthy for bodies in that age are still unhealthy for us today.

1 Timothy 4:3-5 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

Some see that as declaring all food is "good and not to be refused." But that isn't what is written. Instead He tells us that what "God hath created to be received," is good and not to be refused. Was swine, shrimp, buzzard, created to be received? No...it was not.

Moses is our example. Did he suffer from the problems many experience in their later years? (Alzheimers, arthritis, high cholesterol, cancer, cataracts, osteoporosis, heart attacks, high blood pressure.) Are those going to naturally occur or do we bring them on ourselves by our choices?

Deuteronomy 34:7 And Moses was an hundred and twenty years old when he died: his eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated.
