(sorry in advance for the length, I'm hoping you will be patient to read it through.)

This passage seems to me to be one of the more commonly misunderstood parts of the Bible.

26) For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,
27) But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.

You cannot return to the temple and offer another animal . . . sacrifice. There remains no sacrifice for sin. Jesus, or nothing. No more animals!

Hebrews 10:1-31 KJV
1) For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.
2) For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.
3) But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year.
4) For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.
5) Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:
6) In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure.
7) Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.
8) Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law;
9) Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.
10) By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
11) And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:
12) But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;
13) From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.
14) For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.
15) Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before,
16) This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;
17) And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.
18) Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.
19) Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,
20) By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;
21) And having an high priest over the house of God;
22) Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.
23) Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised)
24) And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:
25) Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
26) For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,
27) But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.
28) He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:
29) Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?
30) For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.
31) It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

There is much context here about the sacrifice and offering. Some of the key points I bolded are . . .

The animal sacrifices didn't perfect those who offered them. They only gave a reminder of sins, because they could not remove sins.

Sacrifices aren't what God wanted anyway. What He really wants is obedience.

5) Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:

Jesus came to put an end to the offering of animals as a sacrifice for sins, by the offering of His body.

8) Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law;
9) Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.

In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure, but Jesus came to do God's will, what He DID want. He takes away the first to establish the second.

Because Jesus has taken away the first, and established the second,

By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

It's only through Jesus' offering of His body.

And so,

26) For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,

Because the first has been taken away, and the second established.

This was Jesus' work on the cross.

Jesus put an end to the sin offering, which could not remove sins, and so must continually be offered. He replaced it with the offering of His Own body, which only needed to be offered once, because this DID remove our sins.

Hebrews 8:13 LITV
In the saying, New, He has made the first old. And the thing being made old and growing aged is near disappearing.

God holds us accountable to what we know. The first covenant was "near disappearing". It had been made old, but had not yet disappeared.

But once you learned about Jesus,

26) For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,

Much love!

I would only point out that in verse 12, the sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross is mentioned as a sacrifice for sins.

So, Hebrews 10:26 includes the sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross in what it is mentioning.

If there were true, any Christian who commits a sin becomes forever excluded from salvation.

Meditate on that a bit. If this passage is saying what you say it means, that's it. One sin which you choose to commit, and you are done with God. All that remains is for Him to cast you into the lake of fire.

Or it means that there remains no sacrifice for sin that you can still offer. That system is over. Those sacrifices didn't remove sin. They can only remind you that sins remain. But that's been ended.

Jesus' sacrifice for sin put an end to all the others. His offering - Here's an important part to notice - His offering, which has already been offered, removed sin.

There remains no sacrifice for sin because . . . animal sacrifices were ended, and Jesus' sacrifice has already been completed.

The word there, "remains", refers to what's been left behind, what remains. And there remains no sacrifice which you might offer for sin.

Jesus sacrifice put an end to any other sacrifice, so there's nothing left.

However . . . Jesus' sacrifice, well, in the words of Scripture,

10) By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Hebrews 7:27 - Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.

Hebrews 9:12 - Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

Much love!

No; it is speaking of willful sin; not any sin.
Any sin you are aware of as you do it is most certainly willful sin. Otherwise you'd have to say you don't have power over sin, rather that sin has power over you. But that's not true of the child of God. We have become freed from sin. What sin is there that you lack the power to resist?

Much love!

No; if you dream that you are sinning, for example, you are sinning; however in your dream state you do not have any control over what you are doing because everything is by and through your subconscious mind. That is merely one example. Another is when you are basically attracted to someone who is not your wife. That is sin (Matthew 5:27-28); but it is not necessarily anything that you have any control over.

As Martin Luther said, "You can watch the birds flying over head; just don't let them come and make a nest in your hair!"

And as Job said so clearly,

Job 31:1, I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?

Therefore, in these days, I tend not to even watch the birds fly over head!

OK, so now I'm curious, how do you understand these?

Romans 6:6-7 KJV
6) Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
7) For he that is dead is freed from sin.

Romans 6:10-11 KJV
10) For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
11) Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 6:14 KJV
For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

Romans 6:18 KJV
Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

Romans 6:22 KJV
But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

What is Paul saying here? What is it God is trying to teach us?

Much love!

If he is saying that we are set free from all sin, then there is not going to be any willful sins either.

If he is saying that we are set free from all sin, then there is not going to be any willful sins either.
Here's what I think he is saying. Sin has no mastery over us. We are free to not sin.

If we control our flesh bodies, there won't be any sin in our lives. If we choose to. Now we're getting into the renewing of the mind.

Something very important to understand in renewing our minds is this fact, that we have the ability in every case to not commit sin.

1 Corinthians 10:13 KJV
13) There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

If we accept this as true in every case, we are in fact free from sin. The only sins we commit - works of the flesh - will be those that we do not chose to resist.

I believe yielding to sin is a choice we make when we don't choose to endure the trial by trusting in Jesus.

We are set free from sin, but we don't always live that way. So we're told to put off the old man, to mortify our members upon the earth, to put on the new man. That if we walk in the Spirit, we won't do the works of the flesh. Because we are free.

Much love!

Personally, I believe that when he says we are set free from sin, he is saying that we are set free from willful sin; and also that sins that are not willful will also be dealt with by the blood of Jesus.

But I do believe that there is such a thing as non-willful sins; otherwise God wouldn't have said in Hebrews 10:26-31 that it is willful sins that will make the sacrifice of Jesus to no avail. He would not have made a distinction between willful sins and non-willful sins, if there were no such thing as non-willful sins.

Sigh... I have spoken my say on this concept before and will do so again. I applaud Marks for going back to the beginning of this chapter as it is important to do so. His highlights are good in showing his point, which I agree with.

Verses 1-8 ahow us why under the law we can't be perfected. It "would" work, but there is still a remembrance of sin. Because of that, daily offerings had to be offered, and they never took away sin. 1 step forward, 1 step back, 1 step forward... No progress!

Verses 9-14 tell us the solution: Jesus Christ and what HE did!

Verses 15-18 are reflections showing us that it was prophesied and God had a plan in place. It's kind of important because the author is showing the Hebrews it is in the OT, and not just some new idea.

19-21 show us the authority we have to enter into the new covenant. Verses 22-25 show us what to do: draw closer to Jesus, hold fast, don't waver, exhort one another and yes... The one everyone hates.... Don't forsake the assembling! That is directly what the "for if..." Is referring to (not just forsaking the assembling but everything from verse 22 up... But it DOES include not forsaking the assembling. -- and that was pretty important at the time!)

Verses 26-31 tell us of the punishment. Its harsh, but consider the crime. God made a way to get out of something that HE instituted that just didn't work. Refuse that? Why would you?

But let's finish the chapter: verses 32 - 34 ahow that they have done well and actually on the right track. They were kind to the preacher and each other and they took more stock in spiritual things instead of earthly things.

Verses 35-37 tells them to hold on to that ... To be patient because God keeps his promises.

Verse 38 reminds them that they must hold on to their faith and they must live by faith. Uf they don't, they are abandoned. But verse 39 is a double edged sword: telling them they aren't like that while telling them if they are they have fallen into perdition.

Personally, I believe that when he says we are set free from sin, he is saying that we are set free from willful sin; and also that sins that are not willful will also be dealt with by the blood of Jesus.

However, the qualification of "wilfull" doesn't appear in any of those places. We're freed from sin entirely.

I know we've had this discussion for awhile, what you have called total sanctification.

I don't know that we will walk in faith consistently all our lives, but I believe that while we walk in faith we do not sin. Instead we live lives of love, and joy, and peace, and all the rest.

This conclusion is predicated on the passage describing the born again child of God. Again, I'd have to say, if that's true, then 1 sin, knowingly committed, and we are done with God forever. No more repentance, no more salvation, All Gone! Forever. 1 sin. That would be the meaning. If that were so.

Much love!

Actually, Hebrews 10:2 refers back to Hebrews 1:3;

And Hebrews 10:4 is qualified by 1 John 3:5.

This conclusion is predicated on the passage describing the born again child of God. Again, I'd have to say, if that's true, then 1 sin, knowingly committed, and we are done with God forever. Consider Amos 3:2 and Hebrews 12:6.

Willful sins that are committed after coming to the knowledge of the truth will simply bring chastisement or punishment from the hand of the Lord.

While all other sins remain forgiven.

The sacrifice of Christ is in plain view here, not the temple sacrifices which the letter already told you could not make the comers thereunto perfect. Once you receive the perfect atonement provided by the precious blood of Christ, and you willfully sin again, there is no more sacrifice beyond Christ to help you.

YOU’RE FINISHED!

So fear God and keep his commandments.

They were not free of the consciousness of sin because they could not accept that His blood had atoned, it’s why they were returning to the sacrifice of animals. They were condemned.

If the conscience isn’t clean and we’re afraid to even observe the birds, then we should examine ourselves.

There’s only one sin that is preventing these Hebrews from entering in and that is unbelief.
