The children are told to "remain"--they're there, but they're told to stay there. The Galatians had already received the Spirit (Gal 3:1+). Who said God could fail? If God says "if you do this, I will do this, but if you do that, I will do that" that is not God "failing".

Paul says we are one spirit with Christ. The body of sin was put to death, brought to nothing (Ro 6:6)--we literally died with Christ, or else the Jewish believer wouldn't have been set free from his obligation to keep Torah (Ro 7:1-6).
