The Lord indeed searches the heart (Jeremiah 17); we often don't know what is going on in people's hearts.

Glad to answer. It's a very topical subject. With the prevalence of tattooing, the opportunities for faith based designs have risen enormously, even as in various ways society in the West is more secularized. So in a sense it's an off-spin that provides lots of opportunities that weren't there...

Ephesians 2 does indeed say that naturally we are 'dead in trespasses and sins'.

Ephesians 1 also has some really strong statements about the sovereignty of God, which complement those of Romans 8.

As opposed to how you dealt with it as your sons reached 18 and got theirs; When you did it, after reflecting from Scripture, did it feel good like as a sort of self-discovery?

It's such a wholesome habit to commit Scripture to memory; and by faith for it to reside in the heart. "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee." (Psalm 119.11).
