So I suppose the phrase, Rock of Israel, in Genesis 49:24 refers to God, not Joseph?

    Jesus!

So Peter is a stone, but not a rock?

    Jesus!

In the Bible, does the word, rock, always refer to God?

    Jesus!

I understand that the Bible uses the words, rock or stone, as a metaphor for God. Seems to me, that in Matthew 16, Jesus uses the word, rock, as a metaphor for Peter. Or maybe not. Either way there is no disagreement in the translation of Matthew 16 between the KJV and the NIV. They both...

So, who dah rock? I have heard these verses quoted in sermons. In every case, the speaker has implied that Jesus tells Peter something on the order of "Hey dude, when yal get down with dis gnarly world, I'm puttin' yal in charge. Yal gonna be dah rock." When I read either the NIV or the KJV...

    Jesus!

With view toward harmonization, in Mark the women listen to the man in the tomb. He tells them that Jesus has risen and that they should so inform the disciples. The women “said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.” In the New International Version, the story ends there. I assume that...

I can't say for sure, but I think that Nicolson would agree that the King James Version is the right translation for you. Have you thought of learning Greek, so you can read the Septuagint? Or maybe Latin, so you can read the Vulgate?

A book by Adam Nicolson, God's Secretaries, The Making of the King James Bible is a book about the fifty men who translated the Bible into English for King James. See Nicolson in a CSpan video. God's Secretaries King James Bible, May 21 2003 | Video | C-SPAN.org

As another poster has said, witnesses don't normally agree on the details, so I would expect the details to vary. The editors who collected the manuscripts must have noticed the variation. One might wonder why they included the variations. Since they did not erase the variation, they must have...

Permutation = order of events. 8549 is a different permutation than 4689. In the list of events: The women go to the tomb, find an empty tomb, talk to an angle, and decide what to do about it that is a different permutation than women go to the tomb, find an empty tomb, decide what...

Maybe same angel with a different permutation of events?

    Jesus!

So, the Gospels more or less agree that a group of women went to the tomb on Sunday (the first day of the week?). Mark says that “they saw a young man dressed in a white robe.” Matthew says that the women met an angel. Luke says that the women met “two men in clothes that gleamed like...

Do you know anything more about the women, Joanna, Mary, and Salome?

    Jesus!

For a good example of how different witnesses tell the tale in different ways, we might compare the descriptions of the women (or woman) who went to the Tomb after Jesus’ burial Luke mentions Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, a woman named Joanna, and the others. In Mark at least three...

I don't remember my reaction when I originally read the story. Seems to me, the story can have one of two endings. Either the jury finds for Webster's client or it doesn't. If the jury finds for the client, that implies that forgiveness is possible. If the jury finds for the stranger, that...

Odd version of Government of the People. Herod put John the Baptist in prison, and he wanted to kill him, "but he was afraid of the people because they considered John a prophet." Matthew 14:5 The teachers of the law and the chief priests wanted to arrest Jesus, "But they were afraid of the...

It is a story by Stephen Vincent Benet. I read it in school, sixty years ago. If I remember right, the Devil has the soul of one of Webster's constituents, and Webster tricks Satan to retrieve the soul. Here's a text. The Devil and Daniel Webster
