Question concerning 2 Samuel 23:1–7. It has been a passage I’ve wondered about for some time. In the KJV 2 Samuel 23:5 says “although he make it not to grow.”
-[5] Although my house be not so with God; yet he hath made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure: for this is all my salvation, and all my desire, although he make it not to grow.

Very different from other versions which say “all my desire he will cause to happen.” It is an important passage (imo) to what exactly did God promise David? Also been looking for the “I will...” God told to David? There were several?
LEB): 23 These are the last words of David, the declaration of David the son of Jesse, and the declaration of the man exalted by the Most High, the anointed one of the God of Jacob and the darling of the songs of Israel. 2 “The spirit of Yahweh speaks through me, and his word is upon my tongue. 3 The God of Israel said to me, the rock of Israel has spoken; ‘He who rules over mankind rules righteously, in the fear of God. 4 Like the light of the morning when the sun rises, shining with no clouds, bringing vegetation from the earth apart from rain.’ 5 Yet not so is my house with God, for he made an everlasting covenant for me, arranging everything. He has secured all my deliverance, and all my desire he will cause to happen. 6 But evil persons are like thorns cast aside; all of them, because they cannot be picked up in the hand. 7 And if a man wants to touch them, he must use an iron instrument or the shaft of a spear; then they are consumed entirely with fire on the spot.

2Sa 23:3 The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God.
2Sa 23:4 And he shall be as the light of the morning, when the sun riseth, even a morning without clouds; as the tender grass springing out of the earth by clear shining after rain.
2Sa 23:5 Although my house be not so with God; yet he hath made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure: for this is all my salvation, and all my desire, although he make it not to grow.

simple although David has salvation and his desire and the promise of Christ through His linage, his house (family) isn't as described in verses 3 and 4.

which really points out that despite the human nature of his children, who are to rule in future generations, his God will fulfill as promised, which He did in Jesus.

although he make it not to grow.

“although he make it not to grow” is accurate and not “all my desire he will cause to happen.” that is a huge difference. Thanks for replying as I was beginning to think no one would.
his God will fulfill as promised, which He did in Jesus.
Agree. Do see this fulfillment in Christ.

but you might be assuming what David's desires are, his children were power hungry and his enemy, a curse the Lord told him would be for his actions with Bathsheba's first husband. his eldest son tried to take the throne militarily from him. so to presume his desires are to ward the well being of all his children could be incorrect. if David said "all my desire he will cause to happen" then that is what will happen, but don't presume to know all his desires its the Lord his God that knows and anyone like David, David's desires are to the Judgement of His Lord. scripture isn't incorrect what one thinks it ought to mean or say is incorrect.

One must refer to other translations, or the Hebrew, when such awkward passages arise. The KJV is very archaic, I've seen it cause a lot of confusion with its non-contemporary expressions and grammar. This NASB rendering, makes verse 5 much more clear and plausible. In other words, the rhetoric and inquisitive nature of David's statement, becomes much more apparent with a modern translation.

2 Samuel 23:1-7
23:1. Now these are the last words of David. David the son of Jesse declares, The man who was raised on high declares, The anointed of the God of Jacob, And the sweet psalmist of Israel, 2. "The Spirit of the LORD spoke by me, And His word was on my tongue. 3. "The God of Israel said, The Rock of Israel spoke to me, 'He who rules over men righteously, Who rules in the fear of God, 4. Is as the light of the morning when the sun rises, A morning without clouds, When the tender grass springs out of the earth, Through sunshine after rain.' 5. "Truly is not my house so with God? For He has made an everlasting covenant with me, Ordered in all things, and secured; For all my salvation and all my desire, Will He not indeed make it grow? 6. "But the worthless, every one of them will be thrust away like thorns, Because they cannot be taken in hand; 7. But the man who touches them Must be armed with iron and the shaft of a spear, And they will be completely burned with fire in their place."
