What are some good new or used guitars within my budget?
I would suggest that you look in your area at shops that sell used guitars. If you’re in Singapore, I don’t know the pricing there, but you may be able to find a good new one for that price. :)

It’s important to play an instrument before buying it, so buying locally is usually the best way to go.

For your price range, Yamaha makes a reliable guitar. I've been a guitar player for 45 years, just to let you know that I know what I'm talking about. It depends mostly on what's available in your area. Pray about it as you look. Take your time when buying it.
My biggest problem with buying guitars was that I'd be excited and buy in that state. When you have God's peace and if you can have an experienced guitar player with you and if you like the sound, playability, and look of an instrument, buy it. A warranty is good if you can get one. Each guitar is an individual so you may have to try numerous ones before you find yours. Shalom.

A guitar in Singapore lives in a harsh environment because of the humidity there. Therefore a solid sound board is not suitable as it will warp and crack because of the variable humidity changes. These tend to be in the high end price bracket, i.e. well above $200 USD.

However, a guitar with a ply sound board is more stable in variable humidity climates like Singapore and cheaply priced guitars are built out of plywood although a few can also be fairly expensive as well.

If you are planning to learn to play a guitar, then one under $200.00 USD, whether new or second hand is a good place to start and as you progress in your ability you can then begin to consider more expensive guitars to purchase. Remember that a new guitar will be in a much better condition than a second hand guitar, as it will not have been exposed to the humid conditions of Singapore. Neither do you know its condition and treatment of a second hand guitar and it may have been roughly handled and the damage done may not be obvious until you begin to play it, i.e. like it may not stay in tune for long.

Ron above has given good advice. Play the guitar and listen to its sound. If you are going to learn, then take a friend who can play a guitar and get his advice on the guitar you would like to purchase.

If you are going to learn to play the guitar, then the order of the day is to practice, practice and do more practice as their is so much to learn about the techniques needed to play well. Your first guitar will be just that, because as your skill level increases, you will want to buy a better guitar to play, particularly with respect to the style of your playing as the first guitar may not be as suitable for the style of playing you adopt over time.

Good luck.

We just got a decent one off of Amazon for $60...

It requires tuning often...but it's good enough to learn on.

John

The person lives in Singapore and a cheap guitar may be ok in the US where the humidity can be more stable depending where one lives, but in Singapore, because of the high humidity, it will not last.

I live is Australia, and I have supplied multiple guitars into Nepal on a number of occasions, over 20 plus years and I was advised not to buy a solid wooden sound board guitar because the humidity during the rainy season in Nepal would cause havoc with that type of guitar and that a guitar with a ply sounding board would last longer. So now my policy is to only buy guitars in Nepal, if I am going to give one. On my trip to Nepal, last year, I purchased two. One for a Bible College and one for a church for their worship time. I paid the equivalent of $300 AUD for the first and $500 AUD for the second one in Nepal.

Now John if you got a so called "decent" guitar off of Amazon and it requires tuning often, then it was not a "decent" guitar but a guitar built for a cheap price and the fact that the guitar requires tuning often tells us that loudly and clearly. Either the tuning pegs are of a poor quality, or the neck of the guitar is able to move about because it is not securely anchored to the guitar body.

My hope is that @hishandmaiden will heed @Ron Coates' or my advice and go with someone who can guide her with her choice.

Shalom

@hishandmaiden Hi; so are you into electric guitar rock music?

Farouk, your question is about your interest. The title plainly states that she is interested in acquiring an acoustic guitar. She may like electric guitar rock music but you are off topic in this instance. The thread title suggests that she is wanting recommendations re an acoustic guitar.

I do have a Yamaha from the 1970s sitting in my house. It's still in one piece and still sounds good. :)

@hishandmaiden sounds like Jay Ross and Ron has plenty of experience and has some good advice for you.

@Josho I see....

So are you are guitarist...?

Not really haha, and I should have said that Yamaha music and Yamaha Motors are both separate divisions.

But Yamaha Music does manufacture a lot of different stuff.
