Like all spiritual beings, all works of the spirit are spiritual in nature, spiritually produced by the thoughts, intents, and imagination of the mind of the spirit.
The only difference between angels and man, is that man is a created spiritual being wrapped in flesh: angels are spirit beings only that have not flesh and bone:
For a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.
And so like all spiritual beings, man's works are works of the spirit, but unlike angels, these are only the first works of man, which then produce spiritual works with the body.
Righteousness and sin therefore are both spiritual in nature, being produced by the spirit, whether for good or evil.
All works therefore of man are spiritual in nature, beginning first within the spirit of man, and then with the body.
Christian sinners speak of faith only first, and then works only of the body, being blind and ignorant of the spiritual works of man beginning with the spirit.
First comes spiritual faith with spiritual working of the mind, and then comes works of the body, which are also spiritual in nature, though done bodily, because they are spiritual produced by the working mind of man.
Faith alone is impossible, therefore, because faith is the substance of the works of the spirit: the spiritual work of faith is produced from thoughts and intents of the heart.
Faith is work, because faith is spiritually produced by the work of the spirit in the mind of the man.
There is no spiritual faith without the work of the spirit, even as there is no spiritual faith without the spirit: Faith alone therefore is dead without work, even as the body is dead with the spirit.
James is concluding that without the spiritual works of the body, there are not spiritual works of the spirit, and so there can be no faith, which is the substance produced thereby.
Christians sinners saved by faith alone think carnally, that faith is just thought and not work, and the only works of man are bodily: it is the carnal mind of man that is blind to the true things of the spirit within.
They think faith is thought only, and so their faith is vain imagination only: not alive by the spirit, but dead and blind to the truth of Scripture.
No man is saved by vain imagination only, which is faith alone, being dead without the spirit.
