Having been involved in the political scene for many years there is an old saying that you get the government you deserve.

Indeed. I am also suspicious that the state of a country is reflected by the spiritual state of the Church. I have nothing positive to back this up with - but I can't help but wonder if the condition of our nation isn't a reflection of where our church is really at.

So instead of making a new thread, let's get the Kiwis involved, as there aren't to many Kiwis on these forums.

Jacinda Ardern seems to be pretty popular around the world or so it may seem, she is widely approved of, the media loves her, well that's the picture that's being painted anyway. I reckon she did a great job on handling Covid-19 in NZ, but doesn't sound all that good on abortion.

So what do our New Zealand neighbours think of her?

Is the NZ Labour party anything like the Aussie Labor party?

Who are the main conservative parties in NZ?
There is a rapidly growing opposition to and resentment of her overtly blatant socialist policies. Legislation allowing for police to enter your home without a warrant. And more. You think Andrews a dictator? There are some who think Jacinda and her party are equally dictatorial. Adern...Andrews... Cousins?

So China just released a travel advisory warning its citizens it'd dangerous to visit Australia? Relations between the two countries seem to be getting worse not better. If there is discrimination against Asians (and I figure there probably is to some extent or another), why not ask PM Morrison to appeal to Australians to remain calm and stop maltreating Asians? Why go the travel advisory route, unless they're also trying to hurt Australia's tourism?

https://www.theage.com.au/politics/...assaults-during-pandemic-20200512-p54s6f.html

More than 300 people from Chinese or east Asian backgrounds have reported being racially abused, assaulted or harassed in public in Australia as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

People have been spat at and called "dirty" and blamed for the spread of COVID-19, according to research by an alliance of Asian-Australian groups.
This included being yelled at last month while carrying boxes of donated face masks into Town Hall.

"A lady literally said, 'Who did you steal those off?' Followed by, 'That’d be right, stealing and sending it back to China.' " he said.

Cr Le Liu was born in Shanghai but has lived in Australia for 30 years. The masks had been donated by Chinese businesses for distribution to city charities.

Groups including the Asian Australian Alliance and Being Asian Australian, along with the writer Erin Chew and other individuals, have been tracking racial attacks.

They have set up an online system to record abuse, which has received more than 300 reports during the pandemic, about one-third of which involved physical assaults.

Mainly just Nonsense !
One will always have some idiots within every Nation.

Some of them maybe justified for their actions, 300 as such is bugger all, their are a hell of a lot of Asians in Australia.

They bring it on themselves mainly for much abuse, when I lived in Darwin I like Chinese food, but go to the takeaway for lunch and ask for a small fried rice and the morons would always always always come with a bigger one, so what you had to do is give the correct money before you asked them for such. it's just part of the games that they play because Aussies will just take what's given and pay more because we do not like to argue, but the Asians culture is to haggle and argue, so they take you for a fool, their boss pushes them to do as such because it's smart business. but you will get the od person who will abuse the Asian for being a scammer and rightly so.

If they want to be in Australia they have to fit in with our culture or take the abuse and if we go over to their Nations we have to try and fit in with their culture ways as well or they sure will let you know with abuse as well.

Had a Russian bloke working with us once and he would complain that Aussie people did not take a shine to him and people would say why do you talk to that %&@! he is a bastard ! yes he is but I have to work in with people of my trade, he just does not understand our culture here and he was set in his ways, he would abuse everyone at the drop of a hat and old Zac's wife came to work with him on the job sight and this Russian said to her that a woman's place is in the kitchen and the bedroom, he was not joking at all.

So their is a whole lot of issues that can come about, just in misunderstanding for one, that can cause much fiction at times. Not to mention that many Aussies just don't understand what them lot are talking about.

My bother in law went to the UK and they thought that he was being rude with some of the things that he said and he is the most docile person who would never try to offend anyone. but because of the Aussie take on words is somewhat different to the UK and also the USA have some words they use that is very offensive to us, or even down right stupid but it just does not mean the same thing, as we may think it does.

Because there is no maltreatment of Asians in Australia

Why go the travel advisory route, unless they're also trying to hurt Australia's tourism?

They've put tariffs on Aussie barley and have all but stopped buying Aussie beef. They are also trying to threaten Australia with coal and iron ore as well. So it's clear to me that this move is done to try and damage the Aussie travel industry

And Adern has signed a multi million dollar contract with China for transport and roading much to the disappointment and anger of completely capable local firms and engineers.

Racism against Asians in Australia exists, and has for a long time, there's no hiding the fact it exists.

But the travel advisory warnings from the Chinese government is likely linked to the trade tariffs on barley and suspension of Aussie beef sales to China, and is probably a response because of Australia supporting the action to launch an investigation into China's handling of Coronavirus.

One wonders how much resentment there is in China for centuries if virtual slavery ("cheap labor") the white Western have taken fill advantage of in mining, railroad development, etc. And still do by establishing manufacturing plants in China for that purpose. Yeah, I know, the Chinese people agree to work for minimum wage way below Western expectations so Mr Adidas and Mrs Nike etc are just taking advantage of free market right? But are those Waters really fair? Are they just. And being just is the right thing to do

Frankly, I don't believe you. Maybe you believe that's true, but you ought to know better.

And while they were putting those tariffs on Australian barley, they were telling Trump they'd buy more American barley. Trump didn't seem to care about how the Chinese are playing both Australia and America against each other.

Beef? They just struck a deal with the Russians to get beef from them.

It also doesn't help when rich Chinese buy up the expensive housing.

I agree. Xi is ticked off by Morrison's asking for an outside investigation. It beats me why Morrison did that.

If anyone wants the opinion of an outsider, I'd say China's making things worse for Asians in Australia, but they don't care. They might also even like it a little since they can use it in a propaganda campaign. When China has such a horrible record with human rights, they might like being able to talk about how poorly Asians are treated in Australia.

I've been following the stock market since the crash. I've been doing quite well too. I can't figure out what's going on with Chinese mining operations now; but several of their companies had their stock prices plummet. I can't find out why because the rules for trading Chinese companies don't force them to disclose as much as stocks from other countries. My guess is mining has slowed down terribly. Lack of demand is one factor, and possibly too a lot of miners may have gotten the coronavirus since mines are notorious places to spread airborne diseases. The SEC is demanding now that Chinese companies start disclosing what everyone has to -- or they'll be kicked off the American exchanges. (Good!)

You can expect too to see American companies start moving production out of China to one extent or another. Odds are it may not add that many jobs in the US however since manufacturers will probably use robots instead of people if they move production back to the US.

I may be the only person to believe it, but I think China's economy is in trouble and will get worse. Don't be too surprised if some companies registered now in Hong Kong try to move. Some may move to Singapore, but some may also move to Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines and New Zealand. Some people in Hong Kong are already selling off their stocks in companies registered in Hong Kong. If they can't move the companies' headquarters, there is still apt to be a big flight of capital out of China. The days of using slave labor in China to make things to sell in democratic countries may be drawing to a close.

I can only go by what I read in the Australian press since I'm not in Australia. And I think it fair to say we've seen resentment against China expressed in this forum by Austalians. That doesn't constitute racism to be sure; but where resentment exists, you will find some people go one more step and become racist.

Interesting. Thanks for that. I don't follow any market information, I frankly don't care too much what happens with corporations either way. But I understand many people rely on them doing well.
You aren't the first person however I've heard from who thinks China is in the brink of economic collapse. I wouldn't know if that's from educated knowledge or wishful thinking.

I try not to allow myself to fall into wishful thinking, especially when it comes to finances. If I'm going to be able to predict things fairly well, I have to be brutally honest. I could be wrong, of course, but I still try to be honest.

President Xi has his hands full. Their goal is to have the same living standard as Americans. The Chinese people are getting used to things like pizza now. Indeed obesity is a problem now along with diabetes. But Xi needs to keep the economy moving so the standard of living keeps rising for most Chinese. There is unrest brewing below the superficial contentment, there has been for years. So we saw the central government building cities for manufacturing jobs -- with such poor planning that those cities remain mostly vacant. But the important thing to Xi was probably the jobs created by building those cities. So what if you waste a lot of money? You need to keep the jobs there. So lots of pointless things got built.

Then someone came up with the Belt and Road idea. They could "invest" in building things in other countries and then have the other countries pay them back for it. That would employ some Chinese along with some locals. They had some success, I guess, but they also aroused resentment in some quarters. China certainly ran into trouble with its loans to Venezuela. Now Venezuela is asking for more. I am very skeptical about the ability of other countries to repay China for the infrastructure projects. Say China built a port for you. Now the number of ships is down. Can you afford to pay China back?

It all depends how u define racism i guess...

Does resentment or criticism of Chinese government equal racism?
Does resentment towards the particular Chinese people who buy Aussie companies and property and take our jobs racist?
Does a company who fails to hire a Chinese person racist?
Does a person who won't date or isn't attracted to a Chinese person racist?
Does a person who disagrees with Chinese immigration racist?
Does a person who refuses to work with a Chinese person racist?

If you answered yes to any of these then we have different definitions of racism

Ok so your saying that those 300 reports of Asians being abused has something to do with China's warning to it's citizens.

Maybe, maybe not, i don't know. It may be for the best anyway.
