There is an old puzzle which goes like this..........
If God can do all things, can He create a stone too heavy for Him to lift?
That is actually pretty profound, as we cannot answer it either way, without admitting that there are some things God cannot do...... If we answer :" Of course God can create a stone......", then we are faced with the problem that now God has a stone, which now He CANNOT lift, so back to square one......
Yes indeed there are things God cannot do ( and will not do )..
He cannot lie................He cannot break His Word...........He cannot act outside of Love, because the very substance of what He is.......is Love !
I could no doubt sit here all day and come up with more, but I am sure you get my drift here.
I have a shocker for you.........His Love is available 100% of the time to 100% of everyone , like a constant flow of love falling like a gentle rain from above toward us all, but not everyone will receive it, drink it in (constantly) or are even the least bit interested in hearing about it......
So, His Love is there, but He cannot / will not force you to take it.......That would NOT be Love !
As we see there are many things God cannot do, so once again there is something we don't quite comprehend, which the Bible teaches. In these last times, we sorely NEED instructions from above, but not very many at all, will receive what Jesus died to give us.
"Oh Father help us, grant that our eyes and our ears be opened that we may obtain understanding."
    Peace to all Pia

I had never read that riddle before... :)

I love the old song which says- " God won't make you go against your will, but He'll just makes you willing to go. " :)
Taken from the OT Ex 23 ..where He sent hornets to drive them out..
28 "And I will send hornets before thee, which shall drive out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hittite, from before thee. "
I think maybe sometimes...because of loves sake, He does that with us.
When we get so stupid and 'cloth-eared' that we can't hear...He helps us on our way!! ( the right way...His way )
My ever present hope is, that He will do that with us all...at the very end..ie help all to make the "right" choice. ( His choice) :)
    God bless....H

There are actually things God cannot do! I know, one should gasp at that comment. After All, God can do anything, right?

Well, He cannot make anyone love Him. He cannot make anyone accept His son. God also cannot lie. The OP covered those.

Also along with those, most folks think that God knows everything, right?

Well, God doesn't know a better time to accept His Son than right now.

God gave man dominion or authority over certain things. This is really our so-called free will [two absolute choices: God's Way or some other way]. God spoke and it was so. God cannot break His own Word. When we choose to change to God's Way, He can help us, but we must open the door to our heart. He has no access because of what He gave to us... unless we open the way so that He can show us the Way.

    Remember this from the Psalms:

"Yea, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel." Psalm 78:41

The antecedent for the pronoun "they" is probably the "my people" way back in verse one of Psalm 78. They limited God because He had given them the authority to do so. He also gave us the authority, but when we become followers of Christ what we have done and should continue to be doing is giving the authority back to Him because...

"O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps." Jerem 10:23

We have been given a new Director, which is the Holy Ghost. If we always allow the Holy Ghost to direct, we will stay always on the Lord's side. If we even sometimes take the reins back ourselves, then we will be walking blindly in things spiritual as we did before we met the Master.

God can do what? In us He can all that is required... if we continue to give the authority which is ours back to Him. We can limit God, but we really do not want to be doing that.

Give God the glory... and give Him always all of the authority in and over our lives!

Questions such as these, 'can God make a rock so big that He cannot carry?' are illegitimate. They put God in conflict with Himself. They place His omniscience and omnipotence against each other. God cannot cease to be God. And that is what these questions are trying to create...a doubt in God.

My answer to this is God can make a rock any size He wants and He can carry any rock He makes.

[QUOTE="Copperhead, post: 314481, member: 7511 Well, He cannot make anyone love Him. He cannot make anyone accept His son. [/QUOTE]

I would change the "cannot"..because He could.. I would add "He will not".
He could, but He choses not to....
Just like He could deliver us out of every trial...but for our own good, He chooses not to most of the time..for our maturing.

I AGREE ! with all responses on this thread, including yours, with one exception, I don't think pia was trying to cast doubt, I found it to be kinda light Hearted! I heard that puzzle long ago and wasn't offended. GODS WILL< He will or He Will Not!!!

I heard that puzzle long ago and was offended. Any thing that takes away from God offends me. Thus I try and find a appropriate response to such an offensive statement. I can endure offenses against me. I cannot endure offenses against God.

That is a lie right out of hell. God had all power and authority to take away that tree. Just because He didn't doesn't mean He couldn't. And for that you should be grateful. He could have removed it, or lifted it, at any time He wanted.

You should really think before you speak.

The will of God does not speak against the power of God. What God wills is what is done. It doens't mean He has no power to do any certain things. Your statement is foolish.

Hardly, but perhaps it lacks the details necessary to avoid criticism from christian brothers or sisters so don't share it with them. A discerning eye would see it is intended to be provocative and turn the question upside down and into a witness of what Jesus did for us.

Good grief man, lighten up!! :D
Why are most things with you "a fight."
You should try taking peoples post in the spirit that are are written... not every one is like BOL...or enjoys the 'cut and thrust' that you have with him. You needn't be nasty to everyone...
I think you have hung around with BOL too much...so you talk to everyone else in the same tone. Just saying.
Try to hear the 'heart' in a post and read beyond the words that you
think they are saying. The 'benefit of doubt' works well. :)

just when we think we have it in our grasp, it slips through our fingers - what are we to make of sayings such as "all the world is a dream and every dream is true" or "all the world is a stage and men and women merely players playing many parts" or "this vault of heaven under which we move is but a magic lantern this to prove, the sun is the flame, the world the lamp and we the comic figures that dance and jig and move" - do we really have a life that is our own, who exactly is the we that thinks it owns us as a life and who exactly is the we that thinks it thinks - twinc
