David fought Goliath in 1 Samuel 17:

48 When the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine. 49 And David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone and slung it and struck the Philistine on his forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the ground.
50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him.
The giant's body was flat on the ground motionless, as good as dead. The Philistines were wondering: Goliath, get up.

Was he clinically dead?

I don't know. I don't think David knew either, and he was not going to check Goliath's pulse.

There was no sword in the hand of David. 51 Then David ran and stood over the Philistine and took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him and cut off his head with it.
David cut off his head to demonstrate to everyone that Goliath was dead.

When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.
Ya, Goliath was dead alright.

Did David kill Goliath twice?

No. The word "killed" appears twice in a row ambiguously.

The coroner's autopsy report determining if the cause of Goliath's death was swelling of the brain caused by blunt trauma to the skull by a stone hurled at high velocity, or loss of blood caused by beheading, has unfortunately been lost in the mists of time.

Dear TonyChanYT,
As with all OT stories, the David and Goliath story is a "type" which teaches a spiritual message to the converted Elect:

1Cor 10:11 Now all these things happened to them as types, and have been written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come.

Those who have the "ends of the ages" come upon them are the converted Elect. They have received both the Early and Latter Rains of the Spirit.

I will now give a very summarized teaching on the story of David and Goliath.

In the story, Goliath represents the "Old Man". The Old Man is representative of carnal mankind who are children of the devil.

David represents Christ.

The battle between David and Goliath represents the spiritual battle that takes place within a person to convert them into a child of God.

The five smooth stones represents the New Covenant of Grace through Faith.

David uses the stones to "smite" Goliath in the forehead. This represents the Early Rain of the Spirit when Christ delivers His first blow to a person's carnal spiritual nature. However, since the Early Rain of the Spirit is only a "small amount" (Deu 32:2, Job 37:6), the first blow does slay Goliath.

To complete the job, David takes the sword (represents the Word of God) and beheads Goliath. This act represents the person receiving the Latter Rain of the Spirit. With the Latter Rain, the head (Satan) of the person is removed and replaced with a new head. The new head is Christ.

The person is now converted from a child of the devil into a child of God.

The verses below are related to the "type" taught by David and Goliath:

Mat 26:52 Then said Jesus unto him, put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.

A person takes up the sword when they receive the Early Rain of the Spirit. They are later slayed by the sword when they receive the Latter Rain.

Isa 66:16 For by fire (judgment) and by his sword (Word of God) will the LORD plead with all flesh: and the slain of the LORD shall be many.

This verse is teaching that Christ will convert all mankind (all flesh) when His work is finished. Only then will the ages come to an end.

Rev 13:3 And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.

The "beast" is a believer (a called out Christian) who has received the Early Rain of the Spirit (first blow by the sword) but remains carnal. In this condition, the spirit of anti-Christ (the second beast) will enter them and make them "worse than the first" (Mat 12:43:45). This "worse than the first" spiritual condition is called a man of sin and it heals the beast's deadly head wound by the sword. When Christ comes to the fallen away believer the second time, Christ will pour out the Latter Rain of the Spirit and will deliver a second blow to the beast's head. With this blow, the beast's head will be removed and replaced with a new head (as in the story of David and Goliath). The fallen away believer is now converted into a child of God.

Dear Bob Estey,
Goliath is a "type" for the Old Man who becomes a Man of Sin.

David gave Goliath the deadly head wound that healed (spiritually speaking) with the first blow. David then used the sword (God's Word) to kill him and remove his head (Satan). Christ would be his new head in accordance with the type.

I take the story literally.

Dear Bob Estey,
Yes, the story is literal and is actual history, but as Paul says below, those stories are "types" which teach spiritual truths that are fulfilled under the New Covenant.

1Cor 10:11 Now all these things happened to them (OT fathers) as types, and have been written for our (the converted Elect) admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come.

A "type" is an actual event that teaches spiritual truths. This is in contrast to a "parable" which teaches spiritual truths based upon fictional stories. Christ also uses analogies to teach His truth. The two most common analogies used by Christ is the marriage analogy and the farming analogy but there are others.

Within the three methods of teaching that I presented above (types, parables, analogies), Christ also uses "spirit" words which have meanings that are different from what man's wisdom teaches (1Cor 2:13). Some people call His spirit words "spiritual symbols".

Because Christ teaches in this manner, His truth is concealed from everyone except the converted Elect who have had their spiritual blindness healed. They are the ones who are "weaned from the milk and drawn from the breasts":

Isa 28:9 Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. 10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little: 11 For with stammering lips and another language (spiritual language) will he speak to this people. 12 But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken (by Satan).

Christ teaches the healing of an Elect believer's spiritual blindness in Mark 8:15-25. In this scripture, Christ teaches His truth by "type" when He heals a blind man. He also teaches His spiritual truth concerning when an Elect believer comes out from being under the Law in the story of the woman taken in adultery. Can you see the Early and Latter Rains in those teachings?

Since the things that happened to the OT fathers also taught spiritual truths by "type", Christ applied the stories of Lot and Noah in Matthew chapter 24 where he is teaching about when the "ends of the ages" come upon the Elect. The ages will come to an end for an Elect believer when they are converted. The pathway to salvation that leads to conversion is the true teaching of Matthew chapter 24.

The story of David and Goliath also teaches this same truth about conversion, but in a very abbreviated form.

I suppose someone can make something as complicated as they wish.
