Isaiah 29;6
Thou shalt be visited of the LORD of hosts with thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, with storm and tempest, and the flame of devouring fire.

Jack Hayford wrote an interesting book, E-Quake. In it he discussed the end time scenario. He explained that the Seals are the orders and the Trumpets and Bowls are the actions that fall within. He claimed that Revelation was not chronological, the events overlap and are different vantage points. We see very similar, if not the same events in different chapters.
But the massive earthquake was one key to identifying the Lord's return immediately after. So we see this in Rev. 6:12. But look at Rev. 16:18, it looks like the same quake.
The quake in Isaiah 13:13 and Joel 2:10, 11 and Rev. 11:13 is the same quake as Rev. 6:12 and Rev. 16:18.

The multitude in heaven in Rev. 7:9, who just came out of the Great Tribulation were obviously raptured. But that conincides with the events of Rev. 11:15-19, the 7th (last trumpet), when heaven opens, the dead are resurrected, we receive rewards and the kingdoms of the world become the Lord's - which are all preceded by a great quake in verse 13.
God shows us each event individually so we can understand it. It does not mean they can't be happening simultaneously and overlapping. The trumpets could be blown rapidly. Anyways, he presented Revelation like a multi-dimensional sphere of events with the main worldwide earthquake as a key to unlocking them.
